[h-cost] Sally Queen Associates--annual costume calendar?
Does anyone here know whether Sally Queen Associates are doing a costume-related photo calendar for 2008? Both their old and new websites are selling the old calendars, including the one for 2007, but it's December and there's no mention of a new calendar for 2008. [h-cost] THANK YOU ALL
Thanks for the help with show I costumed recently. When I was designing it it was not known if the show would go up by itself or with another play that was also a winner in the January playwriting festival at Hill Country Community Theatre in Central Texas. So I designed it fully and when it was decided the two shows would run together I asked the director to choose which costumes he would like to see straight through the play. Well, he didn't pick the 'floozy' dress you all helped me with (I'll save it for another show) instead he chose her entrance dress and it was floozy enough anyway. This show pleased me more than any I've designed in a long time and that made me happy. And thank you all so much for your help. BTW, the show was, Under A Cowboy Moon, by Carl L. Williams, who visited from Houston for one evening and said he liked the costumes. We struck on Sunday last. Ruth Anne, it seems as though we do pretty much the same thing. If you would like to trade info and tips contact me directly as above. The next vehicle is a ply that covers fifty years from 1898 through 1947 with lots of quick changes. It opens in April. Re: [h-cost] Irish cloak
When the Kinsale cloak FolkWear pattern was bran-new I made one for my sister, who was a professional musician at the time and traveled in various weathers when her symphony orchestra did run-outs into the state's hinterlands. I used black cotton velveteen and lined it with a shiny silver polyester that was backed with flannel, clearly intended as a coat lining. Black frogs for closure, plus of course a big black tassel at the point of the hood (because who can resist tassels?). Yes, gathering all that fabric (body and hood) at the neck was hard--I had to sew all the neck seams by hand. But my sister wore it many, many times (both on run-outs and to the orchestra's home theater) and said it was warm, comfortable, and of course very elegant. On run-outs, the copious fabric gave her the equivalent of a big blanket to curl up inside of in the orchestra's bus. --Ruth Anne Baumgartner scholar gypsy and amateur costumer -It is my impression that the Kinsale cloak in its present form started to be seen sometime in the 18th century. Never having researched the subject, I'm not certain of that, but based on what I know about 18th c clothing, it seems likely to me. I have one. I made up the Folkwear pattern (without the hood, because I was having a hard enough time gathering the cloak enough to sew the collar on) in a lightweight wool/silk twill blend. I wore it occasionally in fall weather while I was in college. It was a wonderfully fun garment, but I can understand that many people might not want to be burdened with so much material. -- Cathy Raymond [EMAIL PROTECTED] It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.-- Mark Twain ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

Re: [h-cost] Speaking of Dress forms...
Hi there, I am thinking about finally getting a dressmaker's form for myself, but I am not sure which type I should get. Here is the dilemma, I am a woman of ample size (US size 26-28). My hope is, as always, to drop some or a lot of weight, but if I waited to get dressform until I was down to my ideal weight, I would be waiting for several years to eternity. When I pattern draft, I like to stick the pins directly into my mannequin. However, most of the home dress forms I have seen won't allow for that. So, what I want to know is: What dress form would you recommend for a for a gal like me? Thanks, -- *Peggy Viney * Hi Peggy, I've got one that's made of foam rubber with a cloth cover that you take in to fit you exactly, then zip over the foam. I think it's called Uniquely You, although since I got mine second hand from my aunt years ago I'm not sure. They come in several size ranges, mine is about 14-20, although she may squish down smaller. The thing I like about this one is, you can make several covers to fit different sizes within the range, and you can also corset it to work for different period costumes. [h-cost] Wool satin RE: What's your dressmaker's wearing?
--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: What is wool satin? I've never heard of it. Sounds yummy. Do you have pics? Sorry - not yet, cos I don't often photograph things till they're done. It's wool in a satin weave - is v nice to work with, and quite rare it seems. I have a light brown and a dark brown and am using both in the suit. Deb, I look forward to seeing your suit, when it's done. I lucked into some red wool satin mill ends once, and after twice through the wash on Hot to remove the 'shrink-wrapped' effect (like a layer of plastic along the whole surface), it is very lovely. My piece is aging in the stash. I'll set scissors to it yet. :) Ann in CT Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Re: [h-cost] Re: Sally Queen Associates--annual costume calendar?
I heard at Costume College that 2007 would be her last calendar. I always pick up the next year's calendar at CoCo, and was very disappointed. I can't remember when the last time I didn't have a SQA calendar on my office wall! Having said that, things can change and she may decide to produce another calendar some year... Re: [h-cost] Speaking of Dress forms...
Uniquely you - although you may have to add some padding. I made the cover to fit me, then when on the form I needed to add some fiberfill to the belly area to make it fill the cover. But it did make it me. I don't know if there are any others out there that you can pin into. I actually own two uniquely you forms - one very small one made to fit my sister, and one that is my current size (actually, by adjusting the covers and amount of stuffing, it has accounted for me over a 40 lb. weight swing well). -Megan On Dec 7, 2007, at 8:04 PM, Peggy - Krazy Kat Fiberhaus wrote: Hi there, I am thinking about finally getting a dressmaker's form for myself, but I am not sure which type I should get.
