Re: [h-cost] Gen Con in Indy (was: Costume College)

2008-07-27 Thread Leah L Watts
 Hve fun at College, ladies!
Gen Con happens the week after. Is anyone going besides Dawn I?
 --cin

I'm going -- running 5 games, plus probably some demos over at the
Cryptic Studios/Hero Games booth.

No idea if I'll have time to get together with anyone. With the
convention center remodeling, my games are scattered around downtown
Indy. And if I'm not on demo duty, I may head back to the hotel after my
games. Due to things hitting the proverbial fan, I'm staying out by the
airport and driving in each day; if I can't get downtown early enough for
a cheap parking spot I'll want to get out of the expensive one ASAP.

Is the Rijksmuseum open again yet? Most of it (like 90%) was shut

one wing with a highlights of the collection exhibit, which I
didn't bother with because I want to go back sometime when I can see

[h-cost] Itlalian Renaissance hat

2008-07-27 Thread Becky Rautine

I'm trying to find a pattern or how-to make a round balloon like Italian hat,
such as worn in Romeo and Juliette and THe Taming of the Shrew. It's a bel?
I can't remember the term and can't seem to find a description in any painting.

I'm quite fond of Zaanse Schans, which I believe you can drive to in about an
hour, depending on traffic. Yes, it's awfully touristy, but if you're a
mech-e-geek, and if it's open, there's a windmill that you can climb inside of
(the one for grinding paints). It's not handicap friendly, and keep an eye on
the little ones, or they may end up under the millwheel. It was going
full-bore last time I was there, and it was darn neat watching the gears and
shafts turn. It creaked like a tallship under sail (which it definitely
resembles). Scratch the kitty's head at the ticket counter.

Costume content: they make and wear clogs in traditional fashion. I think some
of the docents and employees also wear traditional costumes.

Do check what parts of the Rijksmuseum are open. They've been renovating there
for umpteen years, and you'd think they'd be done by now? Also check what they
have on display. When I was there, uh, maybe 7 years ago, they had a small wing
devoted to 18th century court gowns and lace.

Re: [h-cost] Itlalian Renaissance hat

2008-07-27 Thread Becky Rautine

Thank you. I recently saw The Taming of the Shrew and wondered about her head
dresses and hair arrangements. I thought they were beautiful so I paused the
film over and over to sketch the wedding dress, hair and all, then the complete
set she wore at her sister's wedding. That wire thingy must have taken a lot of
time to weave in and out and around in those angles. I'd love one like that.
It's crown like but still a head garment. For my purposes, it doesn't matter if
its authentic period. I think I'll make one to go with a gown I'm creating.
Don't know all the stages yet but going to be maroon and gold, light ivory and
black designs on the front. Maybe a blackwork chemise with blooming sleeves to
show off the blackwork. I love embroidry so it may have lots of hidden little
things only I'll know about. If I get to the sketch stage with final decisions,
I'll post it.Sincerely, Rebecca Rautine Date: Sun, 27 Jul 2008 14:24:18 -0700
