Re: [h-cost] scholarly historical costume list
Thanks Beth Robin, I guess those lists are what I was remembering. I'll give it a try. Thanks so much for responding. --cin Cynthia Barnes [EMAIL PROTECTED] I started these almost a year ago, but the majority of the posts have been mine, so it has been mostly posts of new book notices, journal articles of interest, conferences, etc. Quite a few have joined these lists, but traffic has been slow lately. Members are from the USA, UK, various Scandinavian countries and Germany, but unfortunately none from France, Italy or eastern Europe as yet. and [EMAIL PROTECTED] Posts to this has currently been primarily about the Janet Arnold Conference and travel relating to Florence, Italy. [h-cost] MEDIEVAL ARCHEOLOGY
In celebration of the Society for Medieval Archeology's 50th aniversary, the first 50 volumes of the journal Medieval Archeology have been placed online for free viewing at http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/library/med_arch/ There is as list of them by years and I just clicked on 1984 at random to find a 30 page article on late Saxon textile finds in the City of London! Re: [h-cost] French titles - medieval
Chris, I had the same reaction to The Devil's Cloth, and his book on heraldry. Entertaining, yes, but not always thoroughly grounded in the most recent historical research. Pastoreau's works are an okay place to start a research project as long as you back it up with other sources. And the pictures are nice. :-) Suzanne On Nov 2, 2008, at 1:00 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: Chris Laning [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: November 1, 2008 9:04:26 PM CDT To: Historical Costume [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [h-cost] French titles - Mediaeval costume and textiles ... The translation is - The Devil's Cloth: A History of Stripes and Striped Fabric (European Perspectives: A Series in Social Thought and Cultural Criticism) ISBN 0231123663 . Columbia University Press (2001). Amazon has plenty of copies starting from £7.99. Michel Pastoureau is a very entertaining writer, but tends to be a bit how shall I say this flamboyant? about some of what he says. I have a couple of his books, including _Blue: The History of a Color_ and right at the very beginning it contains some passages that appear to demonstrate that he either is not aware of, or is deliberately ignoring, some of the significant research on the cognitive history of color concepts (or so says the scholar who gave it to me).
