[h-cost] Curtain tape as costume supply item?

2009-08-08 Thread Laurie Taylor
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out if some shirring tape, from my stash, would be
useable for costuming.

It is about 7/8 wide, with a single cord about 1/4 from one edge. When
pulled, the cord forms a consistent gather, not any sort of pleat or smocked
effect.

Does anyone use shirring tape in costuming? If so, how?

Thanks.

Laurie T.

You sew it down along both edges, then pull the string. I used a pleating tape
once, thinking it would make cartridge pleating a skirt easier. It was easier
in a way, but the obvious bulk of the tape made the whole thing rather
unattractive to my eye so I never used such tapes again for skirts. YMMV

Kimiko,

Thanks. I knew 'how' to use it, but was not certain about costume
applications. The bulk issue had not entered my mind and was exactly what I
was looking for. If there is a costume application for this product, it
needs to be seriously considered against the more traditional techniques. I
won't just dive in with it head-first.

It may end up in a donations box.

Thanks.

Laurie

It makes quick cartridge pleats, The tape is bulky, but you have to face the
waist anyway to make the pleats. Don't throw it out, if you can't use it give
it to a costume shop somewhere.

I have some 2 plus wide stuff at the moment. All cotton and the tape
is a nice herringbone twill. I will probably take the cord out (two
rows I think) and use it as a wide twill tape to hem with. I will also
look into using it for waist tape and other support type uses.

Re: [h-cost] looking for a pattern 18th century?

2009-08-08 Thread otsisto
If my memory services me right, this is a discontinued pattern of one of the
big 3. The neckline looks to have been abapted and by the sleeve design you
are looking at Tudor or the sleeves from a discontinued faux Burgundian
costume w/tie on sleeves connected to an Elizabethan bodice or corset
w/adapted neckline.

I'm trying to locate the pattern being used for this costume:

I suspect it may be masquerading as some kind of 18th century woman's
caraco or jacket. If anyone can point me to it, I'd appreciate it.

If it's the stuff I'm thinking of, it makes perfect verticals for a crinoline,
slip your hoop wire through at even graduations with no need for nipping and
tucking along the length,
