I am in need of several black felt, round, wide brim hat blanks of decent
quality (so they will last the abuse of theatre work), but that cost in the
$20 range. Does any one know of a resource? I have already tried "Smoke
and Fire." They are out of stock and having trouble with their supplier.

Thanks,
Kathy Hoover

Jas. Townsend (http://jas-townsend.com/) also sells hat blanks. Their
web site lists a "Wool Felt Hat Blank HB-902" for $24.

Although some of their detail can be dodgy, Osprey Publishing may be worth
looking into. They often have colourful renderings that may be used as tertiary,
some photos and general descriptions...ospreypublishing.com from memory.

The big question, though, is why not go to the source, contact the Austrian
government and hunt down some contacts?

Re: [h-cost] [ h-cost] Tom Tierney, was Fashion crisis!

2010-08-21 Thread AnnBWass
Just have to give my two cents on Tom Tierney. Of course, in fairness, it
was an inquiry about using him as a source that started this thread.
However, I want to say that I regard what he does as akin to theater. He is
making mass market paper dolls, for heaven's sake! I have many of them
myself. His drawing, I think, is excellent, even if he gets actual costume
details wrong sometimes. If his paper dolls spark a costume interest in a
little girl (or heck, a full grown man or woman for that matter) well, then I
think that is great. I was actually surprised to hear that he did research
at such a place at FIT, but, upon reflection, he couldn't do what he does
without doing some kind of research. After all, he draws from, what,
pre-Medieval times right up to the minute--I think he always does the latest
president's family. (Did you all see the Woodstock book that came out last
year?)

You might check Hats by Leko, although I don't remember their website
or their prices. I haven't purchased from them for a while.

Off the 'top of my head' (hahaha)

www.18cnewenglandlife.org/18cnel/Merchants.htm
has a list of possibilities, including Dirty Billy's Hats.

I got my heavy black felt hat from Steve Pano of Ranger Reproductions and
can easily recommend him. He does not, however, have a website. His other
contact info can be found on the above site.

There is always Jas Townsend and Historic Enterprises for a look-see:

Does anyone know of a resource with photos or
drawings of Austrian uniforms (no necessarily
dress) for the period from the late 1800s to just
before WWI? There seems to be a big gap in
what's published between Napoleanic and WWI.

It isn't really comprehensive, but _Uniforms of the Infantry 1919 to

series called "German Uniforms of the 20th Century". Volume 1 was on
panzer troops (which I haven't read), and I don't know if there were
any others.
