I'll still see it. The costumes, as seen in the trailer, are beautiful. So even if the movie is less than steller, I will enjoy that. Besides, I disagree often enough with critics that I don't let them make my decisions for me anymore. Look up the Sophie Marceau version from 1997, the costumes were fabulous, even though the movie didn't get great reviews. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118623/ This new version seems to have a stark embellished look. I'll probably see it anyway since it's been too long since I've seen a costume film. Any other period films coming out? Re: [h-cost] What's your dressmaker's dummy wearing today?
My size 16 dummy is wearing a camicia made from wonderful soft, silky cotton voile that I got from Dharma Dyeworks. It's part of a Venetian ensemble that I'm making up as a sample for a new pattern. I'm making the gown in white brocade so I can sell it as a wedding dress. My half scale male form, General Tom, is wearing a mockup Tudor shirt with machine faux smocking, and his partner Lavinia is wearing a camicia and a roped petticoat, also working samples for the Italian patterns. The somewhat larger me size form is nude. The shoemaker's children go barefoot... Margo ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

Re: [h-cost] red for marriage dress
just for comparison, here's a short item from my newspaper today about changes in the use of red in China, where wedding gowns used to be red Catherine Linda Walton (in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, U.K.). Color red takes on new meanings in modern China | World news | The Guardian = The Associated Press http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/feedarticle/10532906 The color red has long had special significance in China, symbolizing health, wealth and good wishes. Newlyweds and children are presented with gift money tucked inside red packets, brides traditionally wear red gowns at their weddings, and celebratory fireworks always come wrapped in red paper. That made the color a perfect fit for the Communist movement. Its red army and a sea of red flags and banners came to characterize both cities and countryside following the success of the 1949 revolution. However, in the more than three decades since the death of revolutionary leader Mao Zedong and the jettisoning of orthodox Marxism, red has taken on different meanings and contexts, some ancient, some very modern, finding its way into home furnishings, luxury items, clothing, and leisure goods, as well as the restored vestiges of Beijing's imperial heritage. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

Re: [h-cost] What's your dressmaker's dummy wearing today?
Mine's wearing an almost finished (just needs buttons and buttonholes) summer cotton lawn 1918 dress, based on the Armistice Blouse. My head is wearing a broad-brimmed hat that I made from scratch, covered with cream colored silk georgette. The crown is a little taller than what we would usually see now, and the silk georgette on the crown is underlined with some cream silk organza that I had to give it a slightly puffy but not limp top. The hat is trimmed with ribbon and two types of feathers. While the dress is a soft green with a cream and brown vine pattern, the Votes For Women sash is bright golden yellow. I'm going to be a middle-aged suffragette with a petition at our next ghost tour of our old cemetery next April. Oh, and cream stockings, white gloves (the dress has white cuffs and collar), my grandmother's purse, and a pair of 1930s lace up sensible shoes. I couldn't come up with any good reproduction shoes for the late teens. The two styles that I saw recommended had been discontinued. [h-cost] 1880s city wear (was new Anna Karenina)
Any other period films coming out? ABC TV here in Australia has just adapted Mystery of a Handsome Cab, a murder mystery set in Melbourne during the 1880s boom years. Some of the costuming is pretty good given budgets and stock items for some characters, covering both the wealthy and slum dwellers. Production design was pretty good, too, redressing some less-developed parts of the inner suburbs to double as the city in those days. May be hard for non-Australians to find (check out the Australian Broadcasting Commission web site, it may still be up for online viewing). It may also be on torrent sites if you dare. As a side note, same organisation adapted the Phryne Fisher murder mystery books (wealthy female investigator, 1920s) as a series earlier this year, not badly done, too, although the heroine was more annoying than in the books. Available on DVD for Christmas, probably. It looks like the ABC is going back to funding historical/period dramas, -C. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

Ugh. After the treatment Joe Wright gave the Kiera Knightly PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, I don't have much hope for this. I actually really like the Sophie Marceau version because... well, Sean Bean plays a fantastic Vronsky, and the costumes and cinematography are gorgeous! I love that they did the mermaid silhouette that doesn't get done very often. I'm not going to waste my money in the theatre right now. Maybe I'll catch it with a rental eventually, if I'm really hard up for a costume drama I haven't seen before. -Rachel ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

At the moment I am knitting what will hopefully soon be a finished moebius scarf for my father's girlfriend, and then I an hoping to get Dad a hat done before the holidays.
