Re: [h-cost] where has all the velvet gone? (rant)
I just went to Fabrics R Us last week, and they had cotton velvet in 2 or 3 dark colors (forget which ones) for $9/yard. Hancock Fabrics in south San Jose also had cotton velvet as of November, they had black, blue, green and red. They call it velveteen and some of their less than knowledgeable employees do not understand cotton velvet. I think it is something like $12 a yard. Hancock Fabrics on line may also have it if you search for velveteen. -Kathy From: the3t...@gmail.com To: h-cost...@indra.com Date: Tue, 19 Jan 2010 09:31:17 -0800 Subject: Re: [h-cost] where has all the velvet gone? Re: [h-cost] What's your dressmaker's dummy wearing today?
Currently my dummy is wearing a black garbage bag, her usual garb when vacationing in the basement. However, as Halloween approaches she may venture upstairs to try on my planned Dia De Los Muertos Halloween outfit, then stay to be outfitted in garb from the 1910s in order to accompany the 1910s steam engine from Kinetic Steam Works to a party in January. That sounds much better! Actually the price for creating a pattern is much lower - $10 is not per one square centimeter, but per 1 x 1 cm. So a 5x5 pattern would cost 5*$10 = $50. If the pattern is a rectangle, you take it as if it were a square by using the longer side (ex. pattern 6x8cm is regarded as a 8x8rectangle = 8*$10 = $80). The problem was communication between our company and the manufacturer in China, who only speaks Chinese, so that's why the information was so blurred. [h-cost] 100% Silk Velvet is available
I have not seen it yet (I just ordered a yard), but this seller has undyed 100% silk velvet. Here is the link:http://www.aurorasilk.com/fabrics/silks_shiny/ALLSILKVELVET.htmlHere is the description from the website:All the silk velvet I've seen on the market has been RAYON pile inserted into a woven silk back. This allows the popular burnt out velvet because acids will burn the cellulose of the rayon, but not appreciably damage the silk. Rayon pile is not the same as silk pile! Visually, it is glassier, and of course does not dye like the silk at all.Silk feels so wonderful, rayon does not. The electricity of silk means that wearing this 100% silk pile side next to the skin has the physiological effect of feeding the body with energy!Machine woven of reeled cultivated silk, very even and standard. Because the weave is so tight, this is a most durable velvet. Dyes beautifully. Drapes incredibly, especially when cut on the bias. VERY LIMITED SUPPLY!It is $60/yard for 1-4 yards, 5+ yards are $50/yard.-Kathymy crafty blog: www.medievalartcraft.blogspot.com _ Windows Live™: Keep your life in sync. http://windowslive.com/explore?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_t1_allup_explore_012009 ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] 100% Silk Velvet is available
You have to look at the website to see that all the product descriptions are a bit hippy-dippy, but if you want silk velvet, there it is.As for having to dye it, I think that would be fun as I will likely be making purses and things and this way I can get several different colors.$60 is a real splurge but a little splurge once in a while isn't such a bad thing. And aside from self-promotion, the company owner also claims to investigate and invest in sustainable harvesting and fabric sources with good working conditions, so I am willing to pay a bit more if I can buy something that isn't made under horrible conditions.I will test the velvet when it arrives to make sure it is all silk. I have used her silk embroidery floss because a friend is into dyeing and gave me a bunch and I really like it. I hope I like the velvet as much. Re: [h-cost] All Hallows
My house is decorated as a spider-filled graveyard so I am dressed as spider graveyard queen. I have a bony crown and an all black outfit which includes short puff sleeve (cartridge pleated) jacket over black canvas Victorian corset over skirt which is below knee a-line in front and floor length knife pleated in back and draped in black gauze swag. Plus spider accessories. Subtract the spider accessories and change the shoes and it looks kinda steampunk. I didn't have to go to work today so I'll be wearing it at home to scare kids and have people over for drinks and scary movies. Kathy So who dressed up for work today and what are you wearing? I grabbed random stuff out of my closet and ended up looking like a rather Gothy/Victorian dolly. RE: [h-cost] Quick suggestions for Hawaii
Clarification: Just looked at my post and something is unclear: the fabric shops and mumu shops are not at the Stadium. They are various places in town. The Stadium is strictly for souvenir stuff. I remember going on Wednesday. -Kathy From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [h-cost] Quick suggestions for Hawaii Date: Thu, 7 Feb 2008 13:35:56 -0800 CC: Yes, there is a great market at the stadium (forget what it is called) but I do not remember that is was everyday. You can buy all the same Hawaii-theme souvenirs, seat covers, clothes, jewelry, etc. but it is cheaper than elsewhere. Worth it to do one-stop souvenir shopping then you can basically forget shopping the rest of the trip. Watch your purse, though. Lots of petty theft. Also the fabric stores there sell Hawaiian print fabric if that is interesting to you. They also have shops dedicated to selling mumus. Check the Yellow Pages when you get there if you can't find out any other way. There used to be a shop in Ala Moana mall that sold Hawaiian quilting themed items; they were nice to look at. There should be Hawaiian style quilts on exhibit someplace. Sorry I can't be more specific; it was eight years ago that I spent a few months there and my memory is hazy, plus a lot may have changed. Have fun! P.S. The number 8 bus runs up and down the main drag of Waikiki pretty frequently and it is often easier to take the bus in this area as parking is terrible. However if you are debating renting a car it is worth a day to circumnavigate the island (1/4 tank of gas in an economy car). The North Shore is very pretty and the waves should still be quite high this time of year. Also the Polynesian Cultural Center (run by the Mormons, incidentally, and next to their college campus) is very nice and is on the windward side of the island. You can take the bus but it is a long ride. RE: [h-cost] removing blod stains
I am a nurse and do get spattered with blood on occasion. Hydrogen peroxide works very well in most cases and has saved many of my shirts. It works well for both fresh and old blood. It froths up when first applied and the area will become warm. I rinse well with cold water then launder as usual. On cotton and cotton/poly I have had no problems with fabric damage. I have never tried it on silk, linen or wool. -Kathy From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2007 20:29:46 +0100 CC: Subject: [h-cost] removing blod stains I remember i saw a tv programme from the workshop at Chanel where all the work of the couturieres was shown. [h-cost] My dressmaker's dummy is wearing wool for winter
My dressmaker's dummy is graced with a navy blue wool dress with a round red neckline and (future) red cuffs, seams in progress of finishing with dark green wool herringbone stitch on outside. It is a semi-fitted gored tunic type dress. Future embroidery in Medici wool for collar, cuffs and hemline. Original styling of dress loosely based on dresses in Codex Manesse, embroidery to be German influenced but I'm not trying for period perfect.
