Off the top of my non-historical, non-military mind the writing might
be '(we) support our troops'. Which would place it probably in WW2 era.

[h-cost] need help w/ American Civil War nurse outfit

2014-03-03 Thread Purple Kat
Mostly I need info on what colors to use (or not use), and what is the
average circumference of the hem of the skirt.

I understand that hoops were not used, so I am making a corded petticoat.
Also the outfit will have no lace, decoration, or frills.

Thank you,

Jumping in here - just to make a comment:

I on the other hand are looking for camis with a 'shelf'.
My big problem is that the manufacturers don't make the straps LONG enough.
Nor the body of the cami longer than 'standard'. If I want long - I have to
go bigger, and then it hangs on me.

I am 5' 6 and have a small boned, long torso, short rise body. I prefer
all cotton, and no 'ornamentation'. Can anyone suggest a place to look? The
boy's undershirts are now too small, and they only seem to make men's in
white.

Can you describe how the skirts are 'gathered' into the waistband?

Re: [h-cost] Fabrics Medieval vs Modern

2013-03-10 Thread Purple Kat
I can go into NYC and get medium weight 60 wide pure linen in any
color I want for approx $8/yd.

I can also go to the local fabric store and find appropriate weave
cottons for chemises.. $8.50/yd.

One thing I am really looking for is light weight wool for under
$10/yd. Even better if it is white or very very light colored.

Re: [h-cost] Embroiderry software

2012-10-27 Thread Purple Kat
I have a housemate who does machine embroidery and I posed this
question to her::

Her reply is:

%

Creating an embroidery design is not quite like creating a graphic
design. There are issues of stitch size, thread pathing, push-pull
compensation, just to name a few. There can be a fairly steep
learning curve with any embroidery software.

Having said that, one of the most common packages is called Embird.
There is a basic module and several add-on with different functions,
which can drive up the cost. Thred (sic) is free but not well
supported. Embroider Magic 2 is comparatively low cost, and there are
several yahoo groups supporting it.

In thinking of which machine to buy you want to look at the sewing
field size, what embroidery formats the machine uses, and how the
designs get onto the machine. Methods for that include USB drives,
proprietary cards, and connection directly to a PC.

If you have any more questions please contact me and I'll forward your
message to her.

Katheryne
Who thinks emboidery machines are Majic Boxes and admires anyone who
can use them.

Although it would be nice to do hand embroidery, realistically I have
too many other things on my schedule. For a while I toyed with the idea
of getting a high-end sewing/embroidery machine, but I already have two
perfectly good sewing machines and a huge price tag is a bit
intimidating. I am thinking of buying a Brother PE770, which is a
fairly inexpensive dedicated embroidery machine. It takes a flash drive
so I can import designs from my computer.

I want to do historic embroidery designs and I want to create or at
least customize my own. I'm used to using graphic design software (scan
editing and draw programs), but I know little about embroidery design
 software. Any suggestions?

IIRC during one period of history people wore green lensed glasses to
'ward off / cure one type of VD.. I know - not what you want to

As for the red in your hair... I have seen some 'natural' red heads
that are brilliant red and some that are s orange / red that I
have to look at their eyebrows to confirm that is their natural color.

colour in some lights is a metallic wine-red and in other lights the colour
matches a piece of burnt sienna coating I have. I don't remember seeing that
shade of red as a natural hair colour but I could be wrong.

[h-cost] Costume Con - 29

Fist an apology if this is too far off topic, but I just HAD to
comment about my first Costume Con...

My WOW circuit is worn-out and completely off-line from being
used so much.

My brain is filled with wonderfull memories of outfits that look like
they stepped out of a time machine, helpfull people who put up with a
thousand questions about their dress, people who let me examine VERY
up close the seams and details, and all of the other helpfull people.

I am sooo glad I went this year. Unfortunately due to finances I
will have to wait till it is in/ near NJ again.

Hello to all who were there!! I was the woman in the all black men's
style outfit helping Penny from The Costume Gallery take pictures at
the different Shows (Historical, Future Fashion, Single Pattern etc..

This won't help much but-

I have in my collection:

J P Coats
Clark Company
Coats Clark
White Star Thread Company

Some of the older cotton thread is mercerized boil-fast

I have wooden spools, styrofoam spools (probably 70's), plastic
spools, paper pre-filled sewing machine bobbins (the company went out
of business in 1950's)

IF anyone has a link (or two) to dating sites.. I would appreciate them also.
