[h-cost] Philly Metro Trip Advice
We are taking a road trip to Philadelphia metro today and will be there till Saturday morning. I am tagging along with my husband on a business trip. I've been to Philly several times and haven't made specific plans to do anything special. My husband wants to see Valley Forge. I have been to the whole Independence Hall bit, Franklin Museum, Franklin Mint Museum and Mummers Museum. I have looked at the Fine Arts Museum online and not really interested in their present exhibit. I am really trying to avoid massive amounts of tourists and would like to explore areas closer to our hotel that is near Valley Forge. Is the American Bandstand restaurant still open? Also wanting to eat some real German food.not on the high end. I was excited to go to a real mom pop German restaurant in Milwaukee and all we could find were high end ones. Anyone have suggestions of places to go with links? My best trips are always unplanned. I am excited to explore the metro a little deeper. [h-cost] What is a Whip?
I am working with a 1914 etiquette book and a person titled Whip is used in the section about Dress When Driving. What / Who is a Whip in this context? Men who are guests on a coach wear morning or afternoon dress according to the hour of the day on which the vehicle makes its start. The whip, if the host of the occasion, is usually arrayed in distinctive costume. A gray suit is the usual selection for spring and summer, brown is a frequent choice for the autumn.. In the country, and in summer, a gentleman whip wears a light colored and light-weight suit, with brown shoes and gloves and a straw or panama hat. For touring, or driving an automobile. No ceremonious costume for men has yet been evolved to approximate, in style and completeness, the formal dress an amateur whip wears. Re: [h-cost] Grrrrr ... !
I believe the reason people are having trouble finding starch depends on supply and demand. I have no trouble finding Argo and the old blue bottle of Sta-flo starch in my area. If there is not a big demand for the product in your area, the stores will drop the product. In my county, there is diversity in age depending where you live. In the neighborhoods near me, people are old enough to know what to do with powder or liquid starch. If I drove 10 miles west, where the average people are younger generation, the stores' products differ. That generation would rather go to a dry cleaners than iron their clothes. If you show a lot of the younger generation a box or bottle of starch, they probably wouldn't know what to do with it. Many do not even own an ironing board. As far as product selection and retailers: Watch the Costco documentary that is showing this month on MSNBC. We have problems with Costco dropping products. The documentary explains how Costco buys, product lines, markets, etc. The problem is that the retailer and manufacturer cannot agree on their wholesale prices. When this happens, Costco drops the product. Costco has a 15% markup and regular grocer retailers have 25%. Costco is the number one retailer right now. When Costco, Sam's Club or WalMart drops them a product... what an impact the top three grocery stores can make on a manufacturer. Costco carries a limited assortment or only one product (example ketchup) to deliberately not give customers choices. Research shows that if you only have one or two choices of a product, a customer will buy it on spot so they don't have to go to another grocery store. Given a big assortment, a customer is confused and will not purchase. Here a video of 10 minutes of the documentary: http://video.msnbc.msn.com/rock-center/47182853#47182853 Calvin Klein sued Warnaco Group, a supplier to Costco and other retail clubs, for selling CK goods to these cheaper retailers. BTW, you can still buy SK goods at Costco. http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=2601slug=40239 91 Which would you choose for clothing-- Costco's 15% markup or a department store's 50%+ markup for a designer brand. My husband and I did an interesting survey last week. I was at Sam's Club and he was at Costco at the same time. We both had a copy of our monthly grocery list. We talked on the cell phone and compared prices. Sam's does carry a larger assortment of products than Costco. Costco only carries 4,000 products. Off the mainland U.S., Costco carries more products...I've been to their stores in Hawaii and Liverpool, England...love them! I wish we had the choices these location have. A big problem with retailers and manufacturers is the extreme couponers who are purchasing entire shelves of products. I don't think either end knows how to get a grip on this problem. But it is causing problems of keeping merchandise on the shelves for the other customers to purchase. Lastly, some retailers have different prices according to the location of the store. I have seen this at Lowe's and Food Lion within 10 miles of my house. Strange, both charge higher prices in lower income areas. Lowe's actually carries lower and higher ends goods at higher income neighborhoods. Now, Lowe's is tracking your purchases by your name. Try it! Get their Lowe's discount card, and purchase an item. Go to any Lowe's without a receipt to return the product. They will scan the item and card, and pull up your receipt from when you originally purchased the item. This can be good and bad. My girls are still celebrating Mardi Gras. I got a beautiful Indian embroidered beaded belly-dancing costume in the French Quarter of New Orleans. I also picked up some great hand painted masks in the Quarter. Another one of my ladies is wearing my evening gown from a Mardi Gras ball...my treasure find in Mobile was an evening bag that is completely fringed Mardi Gras colored beads...gold, green, purple set upon gold satin. It went to the ball with me. The bag is so cute that I used it when we went to see The Lion King last week. BTW, I found the costume mecca at the French Quarter on Mardi Gras Day. We went to the Zulu Parade and then headed into the Quarter. OMG! The costumes were to die for!!! 85% of the people were in costume. We caught the Bourbon St. Awards...a costume contest. Most of these costumes were 12 ft high. I did catch the St. Anne's procession through the French Quarter. If you have Facebook, you can see some of my photos here: Bourbon St. Awards: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.344713802240038.82637.107498415961579type=3 Costumes around the French Quarter: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.344555255589226.82596.107498415961579type=3 Enjoy! [h-cost] Downton Abbey Ladies Hats
Thank you for the link. I love the hats from Downton Abbey. The series is a treat to watch on Sunday nights. Season 2 is playing on PBS Sunday nights in the U.S. Season 1 is on Netflixs. My pet peeve, the author of the article refers to the hats as Edwardian. The Edwardian era ends 6 May 1910 when Edward dies. The series' first episode-season 1 starts on the day Titanic sinks, April 12, 1912 and the season ends the day that England enters World War 1. So the film is not set during the Edwardian period. This era is referred to as Pre-World War I or a recent term Titanic Era. The second season of the show begins with World War 1 and last Sunday's episode was set in 1918 the last day of the war. Although as far as fashion eras are concerned 1914-1919 is the World War I years. The following is a description of this style hat from a March 1912 issue of Ladies' Home Journal on my Library website. One noticable feature of this season's hats is the sectional or melon-shaped crown, the different parts of which are joined with silk cording. This type of crown is used in the hat above-a charmingly girlish shape with an even slightly rolled brim. For this crown a striped silk in brown and white is used with heavy cording joining the sections. When made with a soft material like silk a foundation of capenet or crinoline should be used. A unique trimming is made by shirring silk over a corded ring with a soft narrow frill at the edge and a simulated flower center of French knots. The graceful drapery around the crown in a bias fold of silk run with cording. Tiny feather pompoms may be substituted for the silk ornaments, or rosettes would be equally effective. ***My disclaimer, the spelling grammar is of the period and exactly as written in the magazine. This was a very fashionable hat style for the era. I have lots of photos of women of this era wearing this style hat. The magazine mentioned shows two hats like the DA photo mentioned. There is also the same hat with the floral crown in the article. There are four pages in the magazine with 20 hats for all ages of women. The hats that Maggie Smith aka Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham wears, are just like the ones in the magazine. Her hats are my favorite. You can purchase the foundation of the hats during the summertime here in Virginia. I have several and add things to them. They can be dressy with the large crowns and fine fabrics or simple as sunbonnets in straw. I see both styles frequently at Burlington Coat Factory. The dressy hats run up to $50 and the straw hats for $25. Re: [h-cost] Jewelry Making
Two years ago, I took two classes in jewelry making through our local school system. The classes met one night a week for a month. I had a blast! Your imagination will go wild if you are a creative person. My instructor would let the students go in any direction creative wise. People stop me all the time and ask me where I got my jewelry. The following Christmas, I made jewelry for all the women in my family...they loved it. We went to the store and I let them pick out what beads they wanted in their jewelry set. There is a lot involved in jewelry making and highly recommend someone to teach you the skills. This will save you a lot of money in the long run. Jewelry making is not cheap...your supplies, kit, and tools can run into some money. I got into buying bags of vintage jewelry at estate sales and redesigning them...what a blast. I also learned how to repair a lot of my necklaces. There are bead shows that travel the convention circuit. The shows have a lot of classes...and the sign-up for these fill up quickly. There are also a lot of tutorials at Fire Mountain Gems, http://www.firemountaingems.com/ . You can order their WONDERFUL catalog. If you have a problem understanding how to order from them, shoot me a private email. Their pricing structure is a bit confusing. There are also bead stores. We have one in city that offers jewelry making classes...I know there is one for wire wrapping. I will warn you that some of these stores are very expensive. JoAnn's, Ben Franklins, and Michael's stores, have a nice assortment of beads. Michael's runs sales frequently on them. NOTE: Use coupons...JoAnn's honors Michael's coupons. You might be able to take classes at JoAnn's. They have there monthly classes for your local store online. Have a blast with your new hobby! I loved every minute of my classes. I no longer have a dressmaker dummy, but I have wig hat stands and mannequin heads everywhere in my office. All their hats change every couple of months. Three have modern wideband hats...LOL, one of these hats I just spotted in the film Secretariat. Another hat is a late 1920s suede cloche hat (my prize!). One more is an adorable late 1950s/early 1960s white straw hat with a rolled brim and pleated black tulle sitting on the brim. My grand-daughter loves it to death! Behind my desk, are three hats residing on top of a shelving unit. 1. A 1930s cloche hat covered with olive green feathers and a peach band. 2. Wide brimmed Briton hat with a foundation of red felt on top, the lower brim is black curly wool. 3. Another Briton hat of the same style of black velvet. I am not sure of the dates of #2 or #3. Tuesday, on eBay I won a 1930s vintage mannequin head with wonderful features. I am so excited to go into my VERY large vintage hat collection and pick out the perfect 1930s hat for her! Suzanne, The sad thing is that the Halloween shops all buy from the same distributors. Last week on the TV show Whitney, her nurse sexy costume was shown in the new costumes fashion show.OTOH, the TV show is going to show her wearing a lot of these type costumes...so the sexy costume businesses should be selling a lot this year. Re: [h-cost] Carnivale' Costumes WAS Miss Universe 2011
If anyone has watched HBO's series Treme season 2, it showed how they make the New Orleans' (NO) Mardi Gras Indians make the Carnivale' feathered costumes. It was a theme weaved through this season. One episode a reporter was interviewing the Chief about the construction of his regalia then they went to a museum of this type of costumes in NO. I wish I knew where the museum is located. It was the museum next to St. Louis Cathedral. Another thing for me to do in my Mardi Gras research. A lot of work goes into the construction of these types of costumes. They work on them year round. The NO costumes have a lot of hand beading. Last Mardi Gras I photographed the Zulu Parade in New Orleans. The majority of the court has these elaborate carnivale' feathered costumes. They are amazing. The women wear an evening gown with their feathers and the men wear suits and feathers. The Central South American countries that celebrate carnivale' are very proud of their costumes. These costumes have become known as their national costumes. Carnivale' is a huge tourist season for these countries and brings in a lot of money. Being on an international stage like Miss Universe is a perfect opportunity for them to advertise Carnivale' as their national costumes. Going to Rio Venice for Carnivale' are on my bucket list. BTW, an update on my Mobile Mardi Gras costume research...last month when I traveled to Florida for my shoulder surgery, we stopped in Mobile (Alabama) Local History Library and pulled more descriptions of the MG court robes. I pulled descriptions for 1950s 1980s robes. When my shoulder gets better, I will type them and add to my website, http://www.costumegallery.com/MardiGras/2010/Mobile/Museum/ The library's printer was down so we had to scan the articles. We just so happened to have brought our scanner with us. One article from the 1950s really caught my eye...during the 1930s the Mobile Jews created three societies to celebrate their own version of Mardi Gras that occurred one week after Mardi Gras. My husband was getting impatient scanning, so we didn't scan the article. On our way back home, we stopped by to scan the article...I couldn't find it. Something more to research. BUT I was talking with the Librarian, a group of five people joined in the conversation. They have been researching the history of Mardi Gras for 10 years, back to the French origin in the U.S. They offered to me to me many more places to research and they are going to obtain access for me. The group is not researching the costumes, but they know all the local robe designers and are willing to introduce me to them. YIPPEE! The next step in my research! I think I will be researching this till I die...every Coastal city/town celebrates Mardi Gras differently. I am already going there four times a year to research and photograph. LOL! Re: [h-cost] Where is everyone hanging out these days?
As for sewing...it is the #1 hobby for women this past year. This was on the news during the past six months. I don't recall the actual source. I was just surprised to hear this. It's not just the cons, it's the battles and other big reenactment events. I hear people saying they are not going to as many as before. I don't know about your location but in my area of Virginia, I have to pick and choose which reenactments to go to...there are so many through Christmas. There are several in a single weekend. I would never have to travel more than 60 miles. And then they start up again in April. Our small local historical society put on a haunted mansion tour last Halloween season with actual stories of murders and Civil War events. They got the history students at the university involved with guiding the tours. Reenactors are all over the grounds telling their stories as the groups are guided by lantern light. My group was about in tears at one of the Civil War battle scenes. This event was so successful that this event is preformed bi-monthly and people come from all over to see it. Blandford Cemetery, in Petersburg, VA tried this same type of event but it was not effective...all I could think was, I want some hot chocolate! It wasn't as believable as our hististorical where you couldn't get enough of the stories and never thought about how cold it was. Recently, we went to the new Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park. No reenactors, but one ranger toured through home that became the union's hospital. The ranger was so good that the group hung on her every word and stayed after her talk for more info. I can't wait to see what they do for 150th Anniversary. Most of the reenactments here are well attended by reenactors and audience even in extreme weather. Our powwow season starts this month and they are very well attended. Our local reenactors stay very busy. It is not uncommon to see someone at an event one weekend and see then in a different event period costume the next weekend. (from me.)As for those of us who have costuming businesses, especially online, it is always a race to keep up with what is IN OUT. We always have to reinvent the wheel to stay afloat. At this moment, the social media seems to be the way to go What I am meaning is by how you keep in touch with your customers. Keeping up with communication technology is key to any busy today. People want your response ASAP. Everyone in my entire extended family has a cell phone and texts with the exception of my blind deaf 76 y.o. mother texting. I read FB family messages to her. My adult kids sit on FB chat all day via their cell phones. A lot of people do this. I negotiated a contract last week via text messages. I don't delete my text messages, so the conversation is saved documented. Society has become so dependent on fast communication. It is sad to say, but this year a lot of universities are going to only online textbooks. This discussion has been going on for a while with educators very upset about it. But it is the way of the future. The academic powers-to-be want this. OTOH if it lowers the $1,000 textbook fees per semester for students, I am all for it...I have three kids + two DIL in college. Some other things that are OUT are CDs...good luck trying to find a good selection. Most people go to the online outlets and download them. DVDs are heading in the same direction with NetFlix and Hulu being so popular. Three of my kids do not own TVs, they watch movies and TV shows on their laptops or smart phones. If I was tech savvy enough (and I am not), I would develop apps for costuming. There you go...someone smart enough go for it! Just send me a thank you card when you are rich! I love apps! Re: [h-cost] Where is everyone hanging out these days?
I have been following online trends for years. As for the slow time on email lists web, July/August and November/December are slow months. This is due to holidays/vacations months. The busiest months are Sept., Oct., Jan.-March. Sept-Oct is due to Halloween and schools/colleges going back into session. The dead of winter months are the second busiest time...especially in locations that receive a lot of snow. This trend has occurred every year since the mid-1990s. Current events really do take its toll on how much time we spend online. After 9-11 you could hear a pin drop on email lists for months. All of the costuming email lists were so quiet. Since 2008, when the economy started getting bad, email lists have been receiving less traffic. A lot of people are still out of work. People were sending a lot of posts from work. People may have backed off of doing so, probably scared they might lose their jobs if caught. Many businesses are also monitoring employees emails too. Two of my adult kids do not have internet in their homes and do all internet over their smart phones. Presently, I am on six email lists that are active, USITT costumers, h-costume, 19thCWomen, h-needlework, professional DC webmasters, and a genealogy list. I know that treadle-on is still very active...a little too active for me. Loved it, but there were just too many posts to keep up with. I keep up with Facebook several times a day because it is on my phone and laptop. I don't receive email on my phone because of 300+ spam messages that I receive a day. I have personal and business FB pages. Some of my costuming friends float on both pages. We had a fun fashion/costuming chat back and forth on my personal page Friday night. I don't know why, but a lot of costuming people find me first on my personal page. Then I send them a private message inviting them to like my business page. I can't post on others FB pages as my business which is a pain. My business FB page relates to fashion and any kind of costume. There, I pass along a lot of events, job announcements, and interesting webpages. I don't want business FB page to be just about my business.Once in a while, I have a contest and give away something. As for the FB length problem, I post the limit of words and inform people to look in the comments area for more info. I don't get into blogs. I think they are great for some people, but I just never got into it. BTW, from the DC professional IT email list...blogs have been on their way out for over a year. As for sewing...it is the #1 hobby for women this past year. More women are sewing their own clothes or reconstructing clothes than in the past few decades. Second-hand clothing stores are doing well too. Some of these increases are due to the antique type and fashion designer shows on TV. American Pickers is coming out with a show for interior design that starts this month. Another trend to look at is an increase of stay-at-home parents in the 20-30 y.o. demographic. I can go through my personal FB friends and surprised by this increase...and a good many are sewing! This group are not float overs for costumers...these are friends of my kids and nieces. As for traveling...According to AAA more people are traveling on vacations this year than in the past two years. This was a good indicator of people have adjusted to higher gas prices and such. I do expect after last week's events with the economy that people are leery again. Maybe you can contact the costuming events for some stats. I know Comic-Con was a huge success last month. Dragon*Con is expecting between 35,000 to 50,000 people over Labor Day weekend. If I get to go to Dragon*Con, I will let you know. I didn't notice any change in the amount of people at Costume-Con for the past three years...but the people in the know are on h-costume. Maybe they can chime with their stats. As for those of us who have costuming businesses, especially online, it is always a race to keep up with what is IN OUT. We always have to reinvent the wheel to stay afloat. You are welcome Julie. From what I have read the sell bought 18 million. I didn't hear about the sale until it was on the TV news Saturday. But I didn't see TV or internet from June 1-12 because of my son's wedding. I did some backtracking to find out the info that I shared with you all. Maybe we can order the next catalog's sale when they announce its publication. I'll make sure to let you know when it is available. People are begging for another issue to be published of the first catalog. Maybe because of Debbie's age that she decided to sell the collection. She is 77 years old. There are supposed to have been a museum for her collection near Dollywood. I guess it fell through. From reading their FB page, there were several buyers. Some of Errol Flynn's costumes went to a small museum in Ohio. I was sad that I missed the auction being a live feed online. My daughter-in-law saw some of the auction on TVs in Vegas casinos. A couple of people on my business FB page had bought the catalogs. I don't know how they heard about the auction. I would have flown in to see the collection if I had known about it beforehand. Re: [h-cost] Great Trip!!!
Sharon, From Zulu's website and the history of the parade and their costumes: http://www.kreweofzulu.com/history/ Of all the throws to rain down from the many floats in the parades during carnival, the Zulu coconut or Golden Nugget is the most sought after. The earliest reference to the coconut appears to be about 1910 when the coconuts were given from the floats in their natural hairy state. Some years later there is a reference to Lloyd Lucus, the sign painter, scraping and painting the coconuts. This, in all likelihood, was the forerunner to the beautifully decorated coconuts we see today. With the proliferation of lawsuits from people alleging injury from thrown coconuts, the organization was unable to get insurance coverage in 1987. So that year, the honored tradition was suspended. After much lobbying, the Louisiana Legislature passed SB188, aptly dubbed the Coconut Bill, which excluded the coconut from liability for alleged injuries arising from the coconuts handed from the floats. On July 8, 1988, then-governor Edwards signed the bill into law. Zulu's costumes are from simple grass skirts to massive elaborate feathered back boards like in Rio worn by the court. The most famous King Zulu was Louis Armstrong. The men in the parade wear black face makeup. [h-cost] Great Trip!!!
New Orleans: I am back from Mardi Gras! OMG!!! Wait until you see the photos and video! Zulu's costumes were great! I am working on them now. I asked one of the Zulu paraders to stop so that I could photograph him. Got the photo and he gave me the most treasured item of Mardi Gras...the golden coconut! I also got to see Pete Fountain and the cast of HBO's series Treme...Steve Zahn is as crazy as on the show. All the cast was on the float. I was so excited to see Pete Fountain. I grew up hearing his music. I did get a close-up view of the Comus Queen. I watched on TV the toast of Comus and Rex and their trains were so plain in comparison to Mobile's MG royalty. Mobile: I got lots of photos of Joe Cain's Merry Widows. There is a lot of history behind the story. The Widows were so thrilled that someone from Virginia came to photograph them. One of the widows, my favorite, was wearing a bustle dress. After the funeral, a man went down on one knee and she pulled up her skirt and he took off her garter. She also smoked a large cigar. What a ham! The Merry Widows wore large Edwardian, Merry Widows style. Their prize throw was a cup with their signature trinkets, emblem necklace, doubloons, and a garter. Guess who gave it to me...Mrs. Bustle. They also give out black silk roses...I got a rose from each widow and wove them into a wreath for my head.. The Widows were a true story! Nine widows showed up at the real Joe Cain funeral. The Widows always started the Joe Cain Mardi Gras parade in their special float. My sister noticed some ladies stationed in front of their float--all dressed in nice, some sexy red dresses. I flashed my press pass to investigate who they were and photograph them. Six years ago these ladies showed up at the parade all wearing red. They call themselves Joe Cain's Mistresses. They saw my black rose wreath and said, You need some red in that! They gave me some red roses for the wreath. I hand carried the wreath everywhere, even on the airplane. While in Mobile, I took more photos at the Mobile Carnival Museum. After a big search for the location of the local history archive library, we found it with two hours to spare. I am researching descriptions of the kings and queens costumes back to the 1920s. So much thought was put into each train to reflect their family history, personalities, hobbies, religions, etc. We did pull newspaper articles with the descriptions for two years. A BIG bonus was an article about a designer who created 25 robes/trains for 25 Kings queens from 1909-1950s. She made all of the trains with a treadle sewing machine. I will be back in Mobile late May through mid-June for my son's wedding. I hope that I time to pull more research. I did find out that the museum's lower floor was flooded during Hurricane Katrina. They lost some of their 1960s kings queens regalia. I pray that we can find our master copy of the video were shot in 1999 with these costumes. It has to be somewhere in our house. We have been tearing the house apart to find it. I did photograph a 1961 Queen train crown this visit. Sadly, Biloxi's Mardi Gras Museum is still not open. They are working on the historic mansion that housed the collection. The museum was under 20 ft. of water during Hurricane Katrina. Their costumes were sent to Jackson, Mississippi to try to restore them. [h-cost] A Call of Help!!! Mardi Gras Update
I am at Mardi Gras having a blast. Monday and Mardi Gras Day we will be in New Orleans. I need some help! Mardi Gras morning there will be a Renaissance costumed walking club (group) who will be strolling the French Quarter of New Orleans. I don't know their name or touring schedule. They end their stroll at the Mississippi River then drop wreaths in it. Next, anyone who has ashes of loved ones may sprinkle them in the river. Can you please find a website with this the name and tour route of the touring group. I want to photo the event. This is a real funeral. Today I attended the mock funeral for Joe Cain in Mobile, Alabama. Joe Cain was a real person who started Mardi Gras back up in 1866 after the Civil War. Sunday was Joe Cain Day aka the People's Mardi Gras Parade. The day starts with Cain's Widows with a grave side service at his actual grave. The Merry Widows are dressed in mourning attire from various times from bustle to present day. My favorite was his bustle beauty widow.bustle mourning dress, a garter, and she smokes a large cigar. At the cemetery after the funeral, a man got on bended knee and removed her garter. After the funeral there was a New Orleans Marching Club (with Dixieland jazz music like in the movies). We went to the MG parade where the Merry Widows were on the first Mardi Gras float. While waiting for the parade to begin, the widows walk around giving out black roses and black strands of beads, lucky people also get a cup, special beads, and a black garter. Guess what I got?!!! All the previous and press access to walk around and photograph all of this!!! I weaved all my roses together to make a wreath of black roses for my head. I walked back to my holding area and one of my crew noticed a lot of women in red attire stationed before the Merry Widows Float. We HAD to check this out! The women were Joe Cain's Mistresses. One Lady in Red looked at my black rose wreath and said, You need some red in there and handed me two red roses. Love press access! Later, I weaved the red roses into my wreath. I photographed and filmed the entire parade. Ever want to be a target at a MG parade, put a video camera on a tripod. Mine was covered with MG beads. I had to hold on to the tripod to keep my camcorder from falling. Beads were hitting my head and hanging from the wreath on my head. Some Photos: Please do not copy these photos.I am just putting them online quickly to show you. I have completed my project of the Mardi Gras costumes at the Mobile Carnival Museum, Mobile, Alabama. About 98% of their exhibited costumes are on this area: http://www.costumegallery.com/MardiGras/2010/Mobile/Museum/ There are 201costume photos each with their webpage and six index pages. The images are high resolution so that you can view the details. When you zoom in on the photos it takes a few seconds for the image to focus.the photos are very large. Make sure to look at the robe's trains closely. Each one reflects their owner's personality, hobbies, family history, etc. Needless to say, each costume is different and cost thousands of dollars to have designed and executed. The craftsmanship is stunning. Most of the robe trains are about 18 ft. long. Please make sure to look at two photos that I am thrilled that it turned out so good. They are of the back of a queen's collar. http://www.costumegallery.com/MardiGras/2010/Mobile/Museum/Queen8/P1100320.h tm (dead ahead view) http://www.costumegallery.com/MardiGras/2010/Mobile/Museum/Queen8/P1100322.h tm (a view from the floor looking upward) My goal now is to find newspaper articles about the King Queen costumes.this was published each year in the local newspaper. I leave Tuesday to spend two weeks at Mardi Gras from New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama. I hope to have some time the second week to do some research. I also plan to go back to the museum for some additional photos and fact finding. What I don't find on this trip, I will be back in Mobile for three weeks in late May-early June. My youngest son is getting married in Mobile at the time. Last year, I tried to make it to Mobile for Joe Cain Day and go to his mock funeral with his Merry Widows. I wanted to film and photograph the event. My airplane got snowed in and arrived the day after the event. This year, I am leaving five days prior to make sure that I am there on time. Joe Cain is a very important person in the history of Mardi Gras. The holiday was stopped during the Civil War. In 1866 Joe Cain came out into the streets of Mobile parading in costume. This event started Mardi Gras parades back to rolling. More info: http://www.cainsmerrywidows.org/mardi_gras I have an extremely busy schedule until March 9th. March 3rd, I go to Loyola University in New Orleans to meet up with their Library services director and costume design professor. This university is a group subscribers to our online Library and I am going to be a guest speaker for the costume history class. Also catdhing some N.O. parades that day. March 4-6th I am at Mobile for MG parades. March 7-9th we are off to New Orleans for MG parades. I will have a film and photography crew with me in a suite on Canal St. All parades pass our hotel. We are especially thrilled to photograph the Zulu parade. http://www.kreweofzulu.com/zulu/who/ I have wanted since childhood to document Mardi Gras costume history. The dream is finally coming true. [h-cost] Robe or train???
I feel so silly asking this question. I am working on photos of coronation costume photos for Mardi Gras. I am looking for the correct term to use for the detachable train (?) worn by the king and queen. You may view the questionable piece here: http://www.costumegallery.com/MardiGras/2010/Mobile/Museum/Queen1/P1100236me d.jpg I have checked my costume dictionaries and the train definition seems to fit better than robe. I have heard it called both ways. What the correct word to use?
