Re: [h-cost] Busy making holiday gifts?

2007-11-26 Thread AlbertCat
This fall, I made myself a long [to the ankle] cotton robe to bum around the
house in when I don't want to get dressed. I found some great and
interesting batiks and some wonderfully outrageous African prints so I'm
making
everybody one. They take about 8 hours to prepare, cut and sew [one work day I
guess] if I take my timenot bad. I've got about a dozen to make all
together
[4 are done] Doing them up right with French seams and, some that it is
impossible to match the pattern on patch pockets, get welt pockets.

So everyone gets one of those and I bought them all an iPod Shuffle too
and an artsy fartsy 2008 calendar.

Seejust get everyone the SAME THING! [well, I did pick fabrics with the
recipients in mind... and the artists on the calendars.]

Dear list,
Since the traffic has been light, and we assume people are busy, I'll kick
off with, are you busy making holiday gifts?

I'm making dresses for my granddaughters--I was inspired by some very
expensive dresses in an upscale children's shop in Las Vegas--I can make
something
like that, I said. Well, the original intent was to use what was in my
stash, but one of the pieces of fabric was so badly off grain (it has a
printed

design) that I just couldn't use it, and what I bought instead didn't match
color-wise, and I didn't have enough of another; so, after my 4th trip to
JoAnn's this afternoon, I'll be about done. But I do have enough trims in my
stash, and some usable fabrics. The dresses have a print bodice, solid white
skirt, and dark solid sleeves--one is navy blue, one red. The skirt has three
rows of assorted trim in white and the color, the sleeve has another white
trim

around the edge, and each also has yet another trim around the neckline.
The red and white one is almost done and is shaping up nicely. The navy
bodice

is done, but the 4th trip to JoAnn's is for skirt fabric for it.

After this, I'm done sewing again for a while.

Holiday gifts, hah! I just finished making may daughter's Dickens dress and
hat. She said she wanted to make it herself, but with college, she didn't
have time and so, I was asked to do it1 week before Fair opening. But I
managed. If you go to Dickens, she's Miss Kate Nickleby, all in black. I'm
rather pleased with the way she looks, if I do say so myself.

pretty pleased - two pairs of muslins, two pairs of full curtains, and
two pairs for our two garden sheds, to stop people seeing what we are

biting off more than I want to chew. I can't do multiples of the same
pattern - I get bored just doing the same pattern on two ends of these

Every one - if ever ever I finish them - will be different, and therefore I
will still like them when I'm finished. G

I've been offered goof money for custom pieces, but I find I just can't
get into the embroidery if I HAVE to do it. Guess if I'm ever gonna get
rich (hah!) will have to do the work first, and sell it later

I'm not yet to the gift sewing phase - right now I'm
concentrating on getting through my youngest son's
Eagle ceremony tomorrow. My folks are headed to a
month in India over Christmas, so we had our big
family get together this weekend and combined
Thanksgiving and Eagle and a couple birthdays. A bit
overkill, but given the way our family comes and goes,
necessary.

I will start on the gifts next week - Promise. I only
have a couple things that didn't get finished last
year. :-)
Then Ansel wants a new Frobisuit for Bristol next year
and he definitely needs a couple of new shirts and I
need to finish the demi-cape.

Subject: Re: [h-cost] Busy making holiday gifts?

I'm embarking on making blackwork kits for my granddaughters. They're old
enough to learn now. :-)

 Dear list,
Since the traffic has been light, and we assume people are busy,
 I'll kick
off with, are you busy making holiday gifts?

I'm making dresses for my granddaughters--I was inspired by some
 very
expensive dresses in an upscale children's shop in Las Vegas--I can
 make something
like that, I said. Well, the original intent was to use what was
 in my
stash, but one of the pieces of fabric was so badly off grain (it
 has a printed
design) that I just couldn't use it, and what I bought instead
 didn't match
color-wise, and I didn't have enough of another; so, after my 4th
 trip to
JoAnn's this afternoon, I'll be about done. But I do have enough
 trims in my
stash, and some usable fabrics. The dresses have a print bodice,
 solid white
skirt, and dark solid sleeves--one is navy blue, one red. The skirt
  has three
rows of assorted trim in white and the color, the sleeve has another
  white trim
around the edge, and each also has yet another trim around the
 neckline.
The red and white one is almost done and is shaping up nicely. The
 navy bodice
is done, but the 4th trip to JoAnn's is for skirt fabric for it.

After this, I'm done sewing again for a while.
