Keyword spamming is not permitted on eBay. This typically occurs when
members place brand names or other inappropriate keywords in a title or
description for the purpose of gaining attention or diverting members to a
listing.

* Use of Brand Names: Our policy does not permit members to include any
brand names in the listing title other than the specific brand name used by
the company that manufactured or produced the item being offered in the
listing.

* Custom-made items: Although an item may be fabricated to visually match a
specific product line of a recognized brand name, members are not permitted
to include the name of the product line, or the related brand name in the
listing title.

* Use of Celebrity or Artist Names: At present, our policy does not permit
members to include celebrity names, or the names of artists, authors, or

I can understand the author, I guess, even though Jane Austen has been dead
quite a few years. So, I guess you can only use her name if you are actually
selling a book she wrote.

Guess you will have to stick to Regency era and hope people know what that
means.

2005-12-07 Thread Deredere Galbraith

I understand wy ebay say's it is spam..
You sell regency style dresses and not a dress from the movie.
And the dress is also not from Jane Austen.
But you could say Jane Austen style in the discription of the item.

But it is a bit weird that they are sending this now.
It happends so often that people use a movie title to sell their costumes.
And it makes it very difficult to get the right people to see you auction.

But on the otherhand maby people will do a little more research if they
want a dress in style of a perticulary book or movie.

Not that I think that will happen.

How many times people asked me to make a medieval dress and alway's
start with telling me they want a hoopskirt.

2005-12-07 Thread Carol Kocian

I'm guessing the listing would have been fine six months ago,
but now with the movie coming out it has become a brand name. Funny
thing about celebrity names and fashion - I know exactly what Madonna
boots are, or a Jackie-O pillbox. People's names become synonymous
with a style. For e-Bay, I would know what someone meant by a Queen
Elizabeth I style. If they said J-Lo, they could mean something J-Lo
actually wore or owned, an original or a copy of her fashion line, or
a copy of one of her red-carpet gowns. I suppose that's why they
need to draw the line somewhere.

Maybe it would be ok to use Austen in the description without
the Jane. Unfortunately we (historic costumers) use movie titles
all the time, like Ever After and Shakespeare in Love. Not to
mention the fantasy film inspirations! Does this mean you can't sell
a Queen Amidalla style gown? And with artists: Watteau, Gibson and
Vermeer all tell me something about the item.

Your gowns will become popular because of the movie, perhaps
with people who don't know terms like Regency, Federal, Empire, etc.
Too bad they won't allow the keywords that will help people find them.

Re: [h-cost] eBay Listing Removed: Keyword Spamming

I think the basic problem is that the words were in the TITLE of the
auction.

If you put similar words and phrases in a conversational manner in the
description of the items, I think you would be okay.

I think the main problem is they are trying to make the search results (for
people who search by title only) more accurate.

On the other hand, there seems to be little rhyme or reason why ebay does
some of the things they do, because I've seen my share of completely bogus
listings with clearly misleading titles and descriptions (like a pyramid
scheme with the title 18th century Irish spinning wheel!) and no amount of
complaining to ebay removed the items or the seller.

If I were you, I'd re-list it with those words in the description, but avoid
mentioning movie. Like : Are you a big fan of Jane Austen? You will love
this stunning gown that is a modern example of the styles described in Pride
and Prejudice. (or whatever). People who search by looking at titles
*and* descriptions will still find this item, and you can assure people who
*know* what they are looking for by using a very accurate title.

How did people work it out when selling Titanic era dresses?

If someone was a fan of a period movie, they might search on the
movie title to see what merchandise was available. They might not
have thought about a repro gown until seeing it come up in the
search.

Why shouldn't someone be able to get that exposure?

I don't sell on EBay (though I often shop there) but my guess is that the
following portion of their canned message to you explains the problem.

[snip]

You mentioned Jane Austen in the heading, so it was probably flagged
automatically by their system even though she's been dead nearly 200

titles in item captions also.

Might help explain too.
