Welcome, Henry! We were just talking about you. People were wondering about
the dates for CC28, and when the website will get updated (hint, hint!).

That's what Andy told me. I let my Webmistress know about that. The dates are
May 7th to 10th, 2010. And I just looked. The dates are still not up. I'll

[h-cost] Another Historical Wedding Question

2007-12-19 Thread CC2010Milw
Hello!

I am doing some digging around for rules concerning types of marriage in the
British Empire in the 1870's. A Google search for British Common Law Marriage
got me a Wikipedia entry that had a reference that mentions Marriage By
Correspondence
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_in_the_United_Kingdom#Scotlan). However,
I have been unable to find any other mention of it.

Do any of you have any more information about Marriage By Correspondence?

Try this link at Wikipedia - it gives a wee bit more info on the Marriage by

OOH! That's a bit better. But would it apply in the late 1800's and if both

Today was the last day of some friend's visit so we decided to go to
Washougal, a tiny town on the Columbia River, Washington Side.

Sigh! Everything seemed to be on sale although we were dragged by mental
chains to the fabric section. All $3.95 a yard, and 25% off of that...
Purr. The $3.95 fabric there isn't really as unusual as it sounds. They
also had some flat fold 3 and 4 years stuff for $1.95. Even better they
have a HUGE selection of buttons (think of a post office package trailer
about 3/4ths full). Good thing we had the munchies or we would have had to
take a look at what the New Year would have had for us at the other store in
 Portland.

Beautiful Cobalt blue, teal, dried blood red, pink, gold, etc. And we
bought it all! Now we need the Sewing House Elf!

Next stop JoAnns where I can pick up some 60 fabric cores to wind it all on
and set it upright in the attic (no light streaking) in the big plastic
tubs. I write what is actually on the core and the amount.

I just wanted to post a brief introduction. My name is Sarah and live
in central Wisconsin. I first really got involved in history while
walking with friends around Heidelberg Castle in 1992 and picturing
people living there. I have been involved in living history since
about 1994, mainly US Civil War but dabbled in other periods and most
recently WWII. I keep coming back to Elizabethan and earlier,
however, and most recently while doing my genealogy research (most
interesting related to Henry VIII is an ancestor of mine is the
grandmother to Catherine Parr). I have participated off and on with
the SCA (more off than on) but am hoping to get involved again due to
the focus on research and practical application (if that makes
sense!). I am most interested in the social history of 16th Century
England - especially that which caused people to head across the pond
 to the colonies.

Right now I'm going through my fabrics and determining what I have and
what I can do with it. I have some good sized pieces of wool flannel,
linen, and definitely cotton. The silks I have are more 1860s pattern/
plaid and would not be appropriate for 16th Century. I am looking
forward to getting started - and participating when I can. :)

 Sarah

Sarah,
Allow me to introduce myself especially to you. I am the Chairman of
Costume-Con 28, which will be in Milwaukee in 2010. I am also affiliated with
the ICG Guild in Chicago.
If you are not aware of it, there is a growing general event in
northern Chicago in early February called Reenactor Fest.
http://members.aol.com/reenactorfest/chicago.html
I will be there for the weekend and, if you want to use my room for a bivouac
for a day, if you come, that would be OK by me! Just don't mind my other
friends who might be doing that, too.
Contact me out of group if you are. Or if I can be of any other help!

[h-cost] Upcoming Old West Event

2008-03-01 Thread CC2010Milw
Hello!

I know that most of you tend to be interested in less modern periods, but
there are a slowly growing number of Old West Reenactors who are getting
serious
about getting things right. This event has been going on for years and is a
fun time.

And in case you are wondering, I and CC28 have nothing to do with the event.
I just like going to it.

Back when I was doing Rendevouzes, I bought a few cockades for my tricorns.
The square ones were just a few layers of ribbon, gathered in the middle,
and usually some sort of button sewed on the gather. Rounds ones were about
the same, just in a circle.

And the museum is easy to get to from the CC28 hotel. You can either go out
the main entrance, turn left, go to the end of the block, turn right and
walk about a mile, or go about a half block and catch a city bus that will
take you most of the way.

The museum also has many other nifty bits of art that are worth wandering
around and finding.

Also, the Milwaukee Public Museum, www.mpm.edu, is maybe about four blocks
away. The Streets Of Old Milwaukee are a great place to go in Victorian
garb.

[h-cost] Movie Recommendation from a Spy

2009-12-27 Thread CC2010Milw
Hello!

I just saw Sherlock Holmes this morning and I recommend it! I am not a huge
Holmes buff, but have seen various incarnations of it. I get a regular fix
thanks to one of the local PBS stations running the good ole Jeremy Brett
version all the time.

I did have my doubts about Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes, but he does a good
job and maintains his accent all the time, unlike one of the supporting
cast. The men's fashion wasn't that exciting, but the women's was. I have to go
see it again to see a dress that I missed during the scene that occurred
when I ducked out for a moment.

The technology was good and period possible. Although I have doubts about
the taser that appeared in a lab. But its use was well done. There is even
one gizmo that mixed all tech of the times.

A definite good choice in this movie was Guy Ritchie as director. He is the
one you did Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and Revolver. He
is good at twists and turns, and then explaining it to the viewer in such a
way that does not seem like a cheap plot device.

Next weekend, I am catching Young Victoria.

 Subject: [h-cost] 1920s Men's bathing suit pattern

Does anyone know of a sewing pattern for a man's 1920s bathing suit?
Google has let me down. I did find directions for a knitted one, and Past

patterns 7696 for a woman's, but a friend would like one for men, too.
 Any help
 would be appreciated.

 Thanks.

I'd like to know, too! I know of a site that has them, well, maybe more
turn of the 19th to 20th century, but the 20's version was a bit different.

[h-cost] Places to see while at Costume-Con 28

2010-04-05 Thread CC2010Milw
Hello!
While in Milwaukee next month, here are some places that I suggest
you visit while here.
Just four blocks away is the Milwaukee Public Museum, www.MPM.edu.
It is the birthplace of the Diorama, which is still on display, and has an
Imax theater. The Streets of Old Milwaukee are a great place to take photos of
yourself in your Victorian or Steam Punk outfits.
To the east of the hotel is where you can find the Milwaukee Art
Museum, www.MAM.org. the Betty Brinn Children's Museum, www.bbcmkids.org, and
Discovery World, www.discoveryworld.org, all on Milwaukee's Lake shore. To
get to them, you can either walk or take the public bus.
Just south of Milwaukee's downtown area is the Eisner American
Museum of Advertising and Design, www.eisnermuseum.org, if you are interested
in
industrial design of the area.
Also located downtown is the Milwaukee Historical Society,
www.milwaukeehistory.net. Their museum is small, but filled with some
interesting
displays about Milwaukee's history.
For those that are especially creative, there is store in town for
American Science and Surplus, www.sciplus.com. The one here in Milwaukee is
larger than the ones in Chicago, so they have things that were in the
catalog, or never show up in the catalog. For years, people in Milwaukee have
been
going there to get odd things that have other uses.
I'd also like to mention something that most people here have grown
up with. Its the phrase Cooler by the Lake. Milwaukee is situated on the
shore of Lake Michigan. Downtown Milwaukee can be 10 to 15 degrees cooler
than the rest of the city. So, despite the forecast for the time of year, I'd
suggest you bring a jacket or sweater.
Of course, there will be an outing to The Safe House,
www.safe-house.com, on Thursday night. If you are interested in this outing and
have not
contacted me that you want to come along, please e-mail me at
cc2010m...@cs.com.
   Be seeing you!

[h-cost] Another place to go while at Costume-Con 28

2010-04-21 Thread CC2010Milw
Hello, again!

I have found out that Canvasbacks, a company that had made high end women's
clothing, that now mainly sells their remaining fabric from Europe, will be
open the Thursday and Friday of the convention. With the exception of the
fabric for ties, everything is 60 inch wide. The prices range from two
dollars to twenty dollars, with a few things higher than that. They have wools,
satins, silks, cottons, all in patterns I have never seen any where else!

They will be open 10 AM to 2 PM, but, if they know there are still many
coming from the convention, she will stay open a bit later for us.

They are at 1039 South 2nd Street, which is about five minutes from the
hotel.

We, here in Milwaukee, have been going there for years and hope they
continue. But they may close at the end of May.

Someone suggested to me once that cutting strips from a milk jug makes
wonderful boning for smaller projects, like dolls. I haven't had time to
test it myself, but it seems like a pretty good idea. You can always
double up on layers if you need it a bit stiffer too.

I don't know about milk jug plastic and corsets, but I do know that milk

There is a product called Stiffy?( used by crafters who do lace
figurines). I think it has a plastic ingrediant that may work..? Other wise,
 try
edging the brim with hat wire or 18 guage wire which is whipped on the edge
by hand...unless you are adept with a zigzag on your sering machine.
 Tedious, but sure.

Stiffy sounds like a possibility. Thanks for the suggestion!

That is because President Obama and other high ranking political people will be
