It does use hal, and that did help. I can now start typing properly.

Just a word of warning HAL is on it's way out. Already gone for those
of us on the Gentoo ~x86 front edge. When you next upgrade your X server
you'll probably have to revert/move forward with the new modular X config.

Easy enough. Add the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-keyboard.conf with
content like:

Section InputClass
Identifier keyboard-all
MatchIsKeyboard on

Driver evdev

Option XkbLayout gb
Option XkbOptionsterminate:ctrl_alt_bksp

EndSection

[Hampshire] [OT] Conference Audio Recording

2010-07-19 Thread Philip Stubbs
I have been asked to make some audio recordings of a conference. The
last one I did, I used a cheap Sansa MP3 player that will record the
FM radio that the audio was transmitted on.

The next one will not be transmitted via FM, so I am looking at how
best to do it. My first thought is something like a Zoom H2
http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h2/
If the facility also has an induction loop, I could probably connect
one of these
http://www.inta-audio.com/pa-live-sound-c88/induction-loop-systems-c243/adastra-adastra-induction-loop-receiver-with-belt-clip-p3066

If anybody has any experience of making good quality audio recordings
with minimum audience noise at conferences without being ably to jack
into the sound system, then please let me know if you think my idea
will work, or if you have any better ideas. We do not need super hi
fidelity, just clear spoken word.

Thanks.

Re: [Hampshire] [OT] Conference Audio Recording

2010-07-19 Thread Vic

I have been asked to make some audio recordings of a conference.

How many speakers' positions? Are you recording the audience as well?

The next one will not be transmitted via FM, so I am looking at how
 best to do it.

If the setup is fairly simple (i.e. one rostrum, no audience), I'd get
hold of a rifle mic and run it into a laptop.

If you can get at the mic stands, you might also like to add your own mics
to them. Radio mics make the installation much simpler.

If you hire the kit, costs can be kept to a minimum.

Vic.
