[Hampshire] Portsmouth & SE Hants LUG - 18th May
The next meet is this Saturday (18th May) with the usual start time of 1pmat Broad Oak Sports and Social Club. As a heads up, I will be leaving a bit earlier than usual, by about 5pm to attend another event that starts at 4.30pm. Yes, I know that is after the other one starts, but it isn't a formal meeting, more a thank you event for those who helped in the local elections, and having won a seat I should be there even a bit late due to a prior engagement! [Hampshire] Portsmouth & SE Hants LUG - 20th April
The next meet is this Saturday (20th April) with the usual start time of 1pmat Broad Oak Sports and Social Club. For those coming by car I would recommend checking for roadworks, Southern Water have closed the southbound and part of the northbound Eastern Road (A2030) due to a burst sewage pipe. I'm not sure how long it will be closed, but this is top form from Southern Water who closed the road for a major repair scheme in March (yes, last month) to prevent burst sewage pipes! [Hampshire] ONLINE - Portsmouth & SE Hants LUG - 16th March
The next meet is this Saturday (16th March). Due to Broad Oak being unavailable this month we will move ONLINE (sorry to shout, just trying to ensure nobody travels and finds nobody there). Arguably that's quite handy for me as I am without a car until I sort out a new one (and negotiating the use of my son's in the mean time). Getting the boat ready to launch on the 23rd has become and even bigger challenge! As per previous online meetings the start time will be slightly later than our in person meets at 2pm to give everyone enough time to have lunch - virtual sandwiches aren't as filling To join head to: https://meet.jit.si/plugmeet24 I will set a password of 'sat1624' and enable the lobby. Jitsi has changed a bit and now requires a host/moderator with a suitable account. I've got that covered so nobody needs to use an account who doesn't want to. See you there or, well, erm, not I guess - it is purely voluntary, but we still don't bite and we have not plans to, and these are the sort that are not subject to a U-turn in the future Many thanks, Paul Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. | https://www.aptanet.com/ | 023 9238 0001 = Registered in England | Company No: 4905028 | Registered Office: Ralls House, Parklands Business Park, Forrest Road, Denmead, Waterlooville, Hants, PO7 6XP-- Please post to: Hampshire@mailman.lug.org.uk Manage subscription: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hampshire LUG website: http://www.hantslug.org.uk --
[Hampshire] Portsmouth & SE Hants LUG - 17th February
The first next meet is this Saturday (17th February) with the usual start time of 1pmat Broad Oak Sports and Social Club.Sandwiches will be available. I will note that Broad Oak now have members prices at the bar for which you need your card (which reminds me I need to get mine having renewed!). Apologies for the late notice, somewhere between things being hectic and me playing with the configuration of my mail servers as part of my migration something has gone awry. I'm not entirely sure whether that's a failure on my part to send, getting stuck in my configuration changes or what. I thought I'd send the notice ASAP having seen it isn't in any of the lists I'd send it to before (or instead) of investigating. [Hampshire] Portsmouth & SE Hants LUG - 20th January
The first meet of 2024 is this Saturday (20th January) with the usual start time of 1pmat Broad Oak Sports and Social Club.Sandwiches will be available. I will note that Broad Oak now have members prices at the bar for which you need your card (which reminds me I need to get mine having renewed!). I am back up and running having replaced the screen in my laptop too, so things are heading back to some sort of normal.. ish - well, maybe by spring (a year to 18 months before my nerve rebuilds back to as good as its going to get so I'm told, but my walking is significantly less Planet of the Apes now). [Hampshire] It's Happening: Portsmouth & SE Hants LUG - 16th December
Finally we are go, or I guess I am anyway. We are back this Saturday 16th December for our Mince Pi(e)s and Christmas Cheer meet. Usual start time of 1pm at Broad Oak Sports and Social Club. My only issue this month is whether I can get my laptop screen fixed in time having broken it - I'm blaming Covid as my dexterity and concentration is suffering and full recovery seems a way off yet, hence dropping a letter opener on it. Well, perhaps not the only issue, with a desktop that hasn't been exactly used for a couple of years sync'ing email hasn't gone smoothly and I'm still picking up the pieces from a slow sync, messing up read flags and my desktop running out of disk space at the wrong point. Normal service will be resumed one day - if I'm lucky! Anyway, see you there or not I guess, and to those who are in the not category, have a good festive break. [Hampshire] ON HOLD - Portsmouth & SE Hants LUG - 18th November
A quick, and hopefully early enough email to catch everyone, to say that I'm putting the next Portsmouth LUG meet on hold as there's a very good chance it won't go ahead. I'm out of hospital with the positive news, all be it not entirely conclusive, however this month there's a new spanner in the works. I have gone down with COVID for the first time and have been completely out of action for the last week, with little likelihood of being fully back by the weekend. Our youngest has it too, as does my wife (right in the middle of chemotherapy), which just leaves our eldest keeping us going! Anyway, assume it is off unless I send an email stating otherwise, and fingers crossed for next month! [Hampshire] ON HOLD - Portsmouth & SE Hants LUG - 21st October
A quick, and hopefully early enough email to catch everyone, to say that I'm putting the next Portsmouth LUG meet on hold as there's a good chance it won't go ahead. I'm currently on the spinal ward in Southampton General Hospital and am unsure what's next, when I'll be out and how I'll be when I am (just when I'm supposed to be supporting my wife through chemo!). Anyway, assume it is off unless I send an email stating otherwise. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - September 16th IRL
This month's meet will be at Broad Oak, with the usual IRL start of 1pm, on Saturday 19th August. Only three things of note this month: * Sandwiches will be available. * I still have a funny walk (waiting for an MRI). * I had plans to send this out earlier, but with preparations for my wife's chemotherapy completely lost track of which week it was. See you there or, well, erm, not I guess - it is purely voluntary, but we still don't bite and we have no plans to. Keep safe. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - August 19th IRL
This month's meet will be at Broad Oak, with the usual IRL start of 1pm, on Saturday 19th August. Eight things of note: * Sandwiches will be available. * I still have a funny walk (tests ongoing). * The finish will likely be marginally early, or at the least pretty prompt on 6pm (as I have to be at my next commitment by 7pm). * As an aside to that, is everyone happy with the time? It may be a bit long for some, but at same time makes it worth the travel for others. * I'm not going to commit to a talk, but I have been doing quite a bit of work on managing BIND and KEA-DHCP with Ansible and Jinja2 so may be able to talk about it. * As an aside to that, there's a subtle difference between doing a talk and talking about something (something to do with preparation and slides I think ;-) ). * Finally, this list has been a bit like the weapons of the Spanish Inquisition, the list kept growing (I'll just count and pop to the top to adjust the count). * Oh, and finally (again) please note that the date is the 19th, not tomorrow which I know breaks with a long running tradition ;-) (/me makes another quick count adjustment). See you there or, well, erm, not I guess - it is purely voluntary, but we still don't bite and we have no plans to. (I think this still works with me not there!). Keep safe. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - February 18th IRL
This month's meet will be at Broad Oak, with the usual IRL start of 1pm, and sandwiches will be available. I did have a rash thought about managing a talk on Docker / Portainer this month, but ongoing 'challenges' with the NHS have put paid to that. I can still cover it in an unplanned chat if anyone is interested to see what I've been up to, but a formal talk will have to wait. I do have a couple that have been offered so just need to sort out some dates. On the Docker front, if anyone has any insights on volumes that are store somewhere other than /var/lib/docker/volume/ and aren't network mounted I'd be interested to find out more. As far as I can work out from the documentation that's against the Docker way, unless you use bind mounts rather than proper volumes (which of course are configured as volumes just to confuse you!). Computers are supposed to be logical, unfortunately programmers not so much ;-) See you there or, well, erm, not I guess - it is purely voluntary, but we still don't bite and we have no plans to. Oh, final point of note, I will be looking to head off around 5pm ish this month. Things are often thinning out by then so I don't expect it will be an issue, but just mentioning in case it impact transport choices. (Being lazy again this month with one email to all lists, hopefully the cross post won't upset any of the configurations!). Keep safe. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - December 17th IRL
Last meeting of the year is upon us, the "Mince Pi(e)s and Christmas Cheer" one... This month's meet will be at Broad Oak, with the usual IRL start of 1pm, and sandwiches will be available. [Hampshire] VIRTUAL Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - September 17th
Apologies for shouting in the subject, but I wanted to get across that the meeting is a VIRTUAL one this month. 2pm start. Two reasons for a virtual meet this month. I've no idea what impact recent events will have in travel this weekend (maybe nothing much on the Saturday), but personal recent events involving A and other hospital visits have left me both more behind than usual and not in a great position to manage an in person meet unfortunately (not, visits for me personally). As a heads up, next month may well be virtual as well as I'm booked to bring my boat ashore, so will be elsewhere (all be it not far away). Anyway... To join virtually head to: https://meet.jit.si/plugmeet I will enable the lobby as well as the password of 'sat22'. Keep safe. The IoW LUG / IWPCUG are working on a Laptops for Ukranians scheme for those being hosted in the IoW. They are using a Linux base, and I believe there's something in the Taunton area as well that is using Linux. Details for the IoW setup are at: https://laptops-for-ukrainians.weebly.com/ With details of the config at: https://laptops-for-ukrainians.weebly.com/development.html If anyone has any thoughts on the setup or interest in trying to spread this wider let me know. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - May 21st
This month's meet will be at Broad Oak, with the usual IRL start of 1pm, and sandwiches will be available (hopefully fresh ones and not the ones they made last weekend thinking it was the third Saturday!). We now have a curtain across the room doorway which helps with noise given the new lack if actual doors. I'm not sure how well people feel the hybrid meeting is working. I plan to check in and setup the Jitsi room, but am aware it is a bit tricky to join in in person conversations over Jitsi (people break into groups) and muting the IRL room so those on Jitsi can talk to each other tends to separate things further. Feedback most welcome to decide whether to continue this feature. See you there (virtually or in person) or, well, erm, not I guess - it is purely voluntary, but we still don't bite and we have no plans to. To join virtually head to: https://meet.jit.si/plugmeet I will enable the lobby as well as the password of 'sat22' - a totally random change with no discernable pattern to it! If for some reason the URL above has been grabbed I will update via the list and website (you don't seem to be able to reserve them). There is also an app that you will be asked to download if you are using Android or Apple (it is also available through F-Droid). Personally I find the best option is the Electron app that can be downloaded from https://github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet-electron as an AppImage or a Deb package. It is also available from Flathub and the Snap store as third party build, but I don't know how up to date those are. If anyone wants to join by phone I can email a code when the meeting starts (I don't think it gets created until then with Jitsi), but I have no idea where you stand on call costs. It came up at the IWPCUG / IOWLUG meet and I investigated. Keep safe. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - April 16th IRL & Virtual meet
OK, I can't see my previous email on the lists or in my sent, so either I've imagined sending it or it is stuck on another computer / boot somewhere (I may have too many and I may be gradually losing my marbles - they used to be in a jar by my bed!). A reply or two saying you are planning to be there would be nice as I'm aware it is in the middle of the Easter weekend and other things may be happening instead! This month's meet will be at Broad Oak, with the usual IRL start of 1pm, and sandwiches will be available (for those attending in person and wanting to partake). We now have a curtain across the room doorway which helps with noise given the new lack if actual doors. For those either not wanting to attend in person, or not able to, I will be running the Jitsi room again. I think the new speaker worked slightly better than the original one. To join virtually head to: https://meet.jit.si/plugmeet I will enable the lobby as well as the password of 'sat22' - a totally random change with no discernable pattern to it! If for some reason the URL above has been grabbed I will update via the list and website (you don't seem to be able to reserve them). I use Firefox, but I have heard that some have had issues and recommend Chrome or Chromium. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - February 19th IRL & Virtual meet
There's been a bit of a heads up on the PLUG list (why aren't you all on it?!), but this is the formal announcement of the February meet (tomorrow!). It will be at Broad Oak, with the usual IRL start of 1pm, and sandwiches will be available (for those attending in person and wanting to partake). Things have changed a little since we last met regularly as there are no longer any doors on the meeting room. It isn't generally noisy and it will help with ventilation, so shouldn't be an issue. There is also the possibility that we can use the downstairs meeting room if there isn't a function on for some meetings - it will be clearly signposted or announced if we aren't in our usual 'room'. For those either not wanting to attend in person, or not able to (to far to travel perhaps, or maybe a tree on the route!), I will be running the Jitsi room to see how the two work together - last time it had teething problems, this time I should have a different speaker / mic setup that may help - possibly - so drop in and see :-) See you there (virtually or in person) or, well, erm, not I guess - it is purely voluntary, but we still don't bite and we have no plans to. To join virtually head to: https://meet.jit.si/plugmeet I will enable the lobby as well as the password of 'sat22',- a totally random change with no discernable pattern to it! [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - January 15th virtual meeting
OK, yes there is a meeting tomorrow - if anyone shows up! Online using Jitsi as per usual starting at 2pm (virtual sandwiches, etc.). I should be there with any luck, but life is less than predictable at the moment. Last month I managed dad's -> home -> mother-in-law's -> home -> Hedge End -> Bishops Waltham -> home -> mother-in-law's -> home -> dad's, which didn't end up leaving a moment to sign in from wherever I happened to be! Anyway, hope to speak to you tomorrow (erk, I sound like an ad from Angel Radio.. which probably most won't have heard of!). To join virtually head to: https://meet.jit.si/plugmeet I will enable the lobby as well as the password of 'sat21'. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - December 18th virtual meeting
OK, with the rising cases of the new variant, my challenges with looking after my dad (including isolating as much as possible) and having just been boosted (no idea how I'll feel tomorrow, but hopefully not too bad), we are back online only for the next meet (tomorrow!!). My movements are a little up in the air with my dad, sorting out some bits prior to a funeral next week and family (on the other side) down for the weekend, but I hope to pop in and out at the very least. The usual, virtual wise, start of 2pm, although it has to be said there is sometimes someone there earlier and the Jitsi room (if that's the right term) starts whenever the first person gets there! For those I don't see before, have a good Christmas and New Year. To join virtually head to: https://meet.jit.si/plugmeet I will enable the lobby as well as the password of 'sat21'. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - virtual meet October 16th
Right, if my computer will play ball here's a heads up on what is (or isn't) happening with the meeting tomorrow. Wow, this computer is taking me back to my days desktop publishing on my un-accelerated Amiga with ProPage - even in wireframe mode I had to hold my finger down for ages and watch the redraws catch up with where I'd dragged things with the mouse. Typing is behaving similarly on this Ryzen 5 3600 with NVME SSD and 64G RAM! Anyhoo, timing, login and platform as ever (and as below), but I may well be late (or possibly not there!). I've left this meeting as online as I will be up in too few hours (must get to bed!) to bring my boat ashore. I hope to join, and likely drop in and out from the sailing club on my phone, but can't quite guarantee exactly what my movements are. In person meetings may well resume once I've established contact with Broad Oak again (I may well pop in on my way home tomorrow). Watch this space for details - hybrid may be an option if I can get my head around it. May see you tomorrow. You know the drill by now.. we're on Jitsi and the next online PLUG meet is on Saturday. See you there or, well, erm, not I guess - it is purely voluntary, but we still don't bite and we have no plans to. The meet will be slightly later than our in person meets (remember them?) at 2pm to give everyone enough time to have lunch - virtual sandwiches aren't as filling! To join head to: https://meet.jit.si/plugmeet I'm not sure whether Jitsi has issues with random people joining, but just in case I will set a password of 'sat21'. [Hampshire] Joint LUG Event: Lightning talks on Linux audio
I teased this with my last meeting announcement, and then forgot that I'd tweaked some of my outbound email settings to work around a block on the Virgin IP block I send from (I'm not convinced their tech support were/are technical enough to understand my issue and they've gone quite now - I'm paying for my newfound speed with no IPv6 and consumer grade tech support that get lost off script, oh well). I'm sure there's a quote about the worst decorated house being that of a decorator - I think that's aimed at not wanting to do work when you get home, so I'm not sure how it holds up in the world of the computer geek, but my network is forever in a state of being patched until I can get the time to finish things! Anyway, details can be found at: https://www.meetup.com/belfast-lug/events/280903885/ including registration and the link to Mozilla Hubs where it will be hosted. A quick cut and paste of the details gives: Wednesday, September 29, 2021 6:30 PMto 8:30 PMBST MULTI-LUG BONUS ROUND - EXTRA LUGS FOR YOUR LUGGING Short talks from a range of LUG members on a range of desktop audio topics - coordinated by Edinburgh, Portsmouth and Belfast LUGs. On Mozilla Hubs - spatially-dependent audio, because audio isn't complicated enough! Come and hear (if your audio works) people you normally can't, as we share community activity with Linux & Libre groups outside Belfast. So far: - "a lightning beginner showcase on playing music on terminal through MOC" - Tai (Edinburgh) - "a light-quick intro about how to create a song with jack/ardour/hydrogen" - Nic (Edinburgh) - "Home office & OBS, a crash course" (TBC) - "Audio in computers is hard, humans are the problem" - sigma (Belfast) - "Rosegarden & Friends for Making Classical Extra-Classy (feat. Pipewire & Bonus Ardour)" - Phil (Belfast) Still looking for 10min talks, so please keep me posted! Do try out https://hubs.mozilla.com/ <https://hubs.mozilla.com/> in advance to make sure, as we tempt the irony of ironies, that your audio fully works. -- Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. |https://www.aptanet.com/ | 023 9238 0001 = Registered in England | Company No: 4905028 | Registered Office: Ralls House, Parklands Business Park, Forrest Road, Denmead, Waterlooville, Hants, PO7 6XP -- Please post to: Hampshire@mailman.lug.org.uk Web Interface: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hampshire LUG URL: http://www.hantslug.org.uk --
[Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - virtual meet September 18th
Hmm, need a different quote this month... how about "Dammit, the mild cigar found under benches and hedges?"; a bit more obscure? Anyway, after going down with a nasty bug that knocked be out for a week or so immediately after the last meet, I'm almost caught up. I've not established where we are with in person meets yet so we are online again this month (hopefully we can get back to Broad Oak soon, I'm certainly running a Repair Cafe at the Pallant Centre in Havant on a monthly basis and things are working well enough there. If anyone has any comments or ideas about online vs in person, Saturday afternoons as usual or other times, alternative venues (although we do pretty well where we are except for access for those that can't manage the stairs, which is a shame) drop me an email. On a related note, a quick 'save the date' heads up that we are planning a virtual multi-LUG event on Wednesday 29th between 6:30pm and 8:30pm - more details to follow once the final details are tied down. I'm still on Openreach, hopefully third install date will be the charm (although technically you could argue that it is the fourth as the offered one and by the time I'd managed to let them know it was OK it was gone). As an aside, if anyone has an interest in old Linux magazines and would like some (and can collect from near Portsmouth) I have most of the issues of Linux Journal from 1995 to 2002 that need to go to make space. There's a good chance I'll have Linux Format, Linux Magazine and Linux User / Linux User & Developer issues in the not too distant future too. To join head to: https://meet.jit.si/plugmeet I'm not sure whether Jitsi has issues with random people joining, but just in case I will set a password of 'sat21'. If for some reason the URL above has been grabbed I will update via the list and website (you don't seem to be able to reserve them). I use Firefox, but I have heard that some have had issues and recommend Chrome or Chromium. There is also an app that you will be asked to download if you are using Android or Apple (it is also available through F-Droid). If anyone wants to join by phone I can email a code when the meeting starts (I don't think it gets created until then with Jitsi), but I have no idea where you stand on call costs. It came up at the IWPCUG / IOWLUG meet and I investigated. See and/or hear you there - so to speak! Keep safe. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - virtual meet April 17th
You know the drill by now.. we're on Jitsi (noting the subtle update of the password from last year, although there is now a lobby so you should be spotted and let in if you forget it) the next online PLUG meet Saturday. See you there or, well, erm, not I guess - it is purely voluntary, but we still don't bite and we have not plans to. The meet will be slightly later than our in person meets at 2pm to give everyone enough time to have lunch - virtual sandwiches aren't as filling! With any luck my connection will be just about adequate to cope and I will try very hard not to grumble about Openreach failing to fix my connection and then almost, but not quite getting it back to where it was (14Mbps is a truly blistering FTTC speed). I will also try very hard not to moan about Virgin having cancelled my new line install twice because the council have paved over the access and they need permission to sort that out. Erk, with jury service and trying to keep on top of work, meetings, etc. I've completely failed to send out the notice for tomorrows LUG meet. Well it is going ahead, assuming at least one person turns up, so... [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - virtual meet January 16th
Welcome to 2021, I think you'll all agree that it is much improved over 2020 so far! Nothing like talking Linux, open source and general techy type stuff to take your mind of things though, so with the usual drill for Jitsi (although note the subtle update of the password) the first online PLUG meet of the year is this coming Saturday. See you there or, well, erm, not I guess - it is purely voluntary, but we still don't bite and we have not plans to, and these are the sort that are not subject to a U-turn in the future ;-) The meet will be slightly later than our in person meets at 2pm to give everyone enough time to have lunch - virtual sandwiches aren't as filling! [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - virtual meet November 21st
Lockdown has arrived again so we are still in the world of virtual meetings. If you haven't tried one please do, we don't bite, and even if we did you're a safe distance away behind a webcam and mic (no need to have the camera on if you prefer not to). Apologies for the late notice, a combination of toothache (not ideal in lockdown) and an eye infection (makes using a computer difficult, at least for a novice, I'm sure Mike could give me a lesson or two!) have caused some interesting challenges over the past week or so. The meet will be slightly later than our in person meets at 2pm to give everyone enough time to have lunch - virtual sandwiches aren't as filling! To join head to: https://meet.jit.si/plugmeet I'm not sure whether Jitsi has issues with random people joining, but just in case I will set a password of 'sat20'. If for some reason the URL above has been grabbed I will update via the list and website (you don't seem to be able to reserve them). [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - virtual meet October 17th
Another virtual meeting this month, our venue is now open, but not the section we use. Of course the new rule of 6 restrictions scupper things anyway, and I'm far from sure how many people would want to meet in person anyway. I suspect we will continue as virtual until the New Year, but will keep an eye on things to see how they change. Apologies for the short notice, it is almost traditional now! I have been battling toothache with limited dental service and sorting out a test so we can get out of isolation (so I couldn't run an IRL meet anyway). All of which has distracted me, but I will host on Jitsi as usual for anyone who wishes to have a chat - the (new) usual virtual meet details are below. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - virtual meet August 15th
Another virtual meeting this month, our venue is currently still closed. Somebody had the audacity (open source joke? no, move on!) to start the month on a Saturday which puts the third Saturday far too early in the month! Combine this with email issues[1] (distraction, not failure to send) and a battle with my insurance claim from February kicking into a new gear (don't insure with LV) I have to add apologies for the later (even than usual) notification. Thanks, Paul [1] not the only issue, but it will teach me to use Windows only to find my AV software silently blocks email so you think there isn't any coming in! Another virtual meeting this month, our venue is currently still closed. The meet will be slightly later than our in person meets at 2pm to give everyone enough time to have lunch - virtual sandwiches aren't as filling! To join head to: https://meet.jit.si/plugmeet This month there might be a talk on WireGuard, although that is far from guaranteed as it depends on the availability of the speaker which isn't finalised yet. With a fair weather and a decent cross channel breeze it may happen though. On the plus side, there is no need to travel and find out it isn't happening. For anyone interested in WireGuard there will be the opportunity to chat anyway as I have just set it up on my OpenWrt router and connected from my Android phone and laptop. My phone detects when it isn't on my local WiFi and brings up the VPN automatically... but that uses Tasker which isn't open source so perhaps I shouldn't mention that! I've been doing too many non list replies recently where bottom posting confuses people for some reason. I didn't spot this email before, wow, is it that long ago! Re: [Hampshire] [Surrey] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG - virtual meet May 16th
I've not found it any less user friendly than others I've tried - mainly GoTo Meeting, although I had a Zoom meeting tonight which didn't go according to plan. Took me a while to work my way around it, then it lost my webcam and finally it just closed. Thankfully when I restarted it managed to make the rest of the meeting, although it was prone to freezing the video and the audio broke up several times. Overall the image and sound quality seemed far worse than Jisti (9 people on Jitsi and 13 on Zoom). There is a Jitsi client written for Electron, but it doesn't seem to be packaged so it is a case of downloading from Github. Nice to 'see' you on Saturday. ** James Courtier-Dutton via Hampshire [2020-05-16 17:49]: > Hi, > > I joined the Jitsu today from a Linux Ubuntu 20.04. > Using Chrome it cut me off after about 10 seconds, I tried a few times > without any luck. > I then tried with Firefox, and it worked fine. Rather late notice, but there will be a virtual meet this Saturday 16th May. The days and weeks seem to blend together at the moment - it was suggested (a while back) that it was 2 NHS claps and 2 days to the next meet! I can't imagine anyone is expecting an April meeting, and days are merging into each other at the moment, but I will just send out a confirmation that there will be no meeting. I am looking into options for a virtual meeting though, so will update if/when I have something. If anyone has any preferences of timings or platforms they really don't want to use let me know. At the moment Jitsi in what I am looking at. Watch the mailing list and/or website for updates on the status of the May meeting. Keep safe. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG ** NO MARCH MEETING **
I doubt this will come as a huge surprise, but there will be no March meeting this coming weekend. I have decided to err on the side of caution and cancel the March meeting. If you know anyone who was planning to attend or usually does please make sure they are aware. I have updated the website accordingly. Watch the mailing list and/or website for updates on the status of the April meeting. [Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG meeting Saturday, 15th February 2020
The next Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Linux Users Group meeting will be this coming Saturday, 15th February 2020 from 1pm to 6pm in the Broad Oak Social Club, Hilsea. Talks start at 3pm. http://www.portsmouth.lug.org.uk/venue.html In view of the weather I am postponing my planned talk. Two reasons for this, firstly for those who may not want to travel not to miss out (when there is actually a talk!), and secondly it isn't ready. That is due in no small part to the weather since part of the roof went from the back of the house to the front lawn (and the one next door and the skip next door but one), so instead of finishing it off and getting the notice out in good time I was sorting out insurance, emptying buckets and temporary repairs. A 'bring-a-box' meet in old speak, 'clinic' in some circles, or whatever you want to call a bunch of people getting together to talk open source, free software, etc., etc.. Share experiences, problems and learn new things :-) Don't forget you can bring along a problem or two and ask for help solving them... or come along to get stuck into somebody elses challenging issue. Anything related to Linux, open source, Raspberry Pi, etc. most welcome. There will be plenty of good chat, problem solving and general geekery. Sandwiches, tech talk and excellent company guaranteed as usual, of course. Talks start at 3pm. http://www.portsmouth.lug.org.uk/venue.html Panic!! There is a meeting tomorrow, my New Years resolution is already broken (make sure the notifications arrive in good time). In my defence I did send one out, but I have to confess to not having checked that it arrived on the lists. I did plan to have a talk, but it hasn't quite materialised (which translates to the fact that my week was completely reorganised by work and what I was planning to do, which was going to be the basis for the talk, hasn't happened). I will aim to get it organised for next month, which will also allow it to be announced in good time :-) A 'bring-a-box' meet in old speak, 'clinic' in some circles, or whatever you want to call a bunch of people getting together to talk open source, free software, etc., etc.. The next Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Linux Users Group meeting will be this coming Saturday, 21st December 2019 from 1pm to 6pm in the Broad Oak Social Club, Hilsea. No talk this month, but I'm sure there will be plenty of good conversation, and I will bring some mince pies to go with the usual sandwiches. To keep with the theme, if you're doing something interesting with a Raspberry Pi why not bring it along. I'm sure we can tell the difference between the Mince and Raspberry varieties ;-) If anyone is interested in the tiny GL iNet OpenWrt base routers, I'll bring mine along. I'm doing a lightning talk on backing up WordPress with mysqldump and tar on Wednesday at the WordPress meetup, so that is also available. There will be plenty of good chat, problem solving and general geekery. Sandwiches, tech talk and excellent company guaranteed as usual, of course. As such, I'll need to > uninstall the router in the study and put the new router directly into the > master in the dining room. > > Does anyone know definitively? > > Cheers > > Rob ** end quote [Rob Malpass via Hampshire] My dad is with BT with Infinity and has the Home Hub on an extension without problems (well, not related to that anyway). From memory the upgrade wasn't simply a case of plugging in and off as there was a switchover point where the one configured for ADSL stopped working and the VDSL one started. I guess their firmware may have been upgraded to be able to check, or perhaps they co-ordinate with the engineer making the changes at the exchange to update the configuration remotely (I nearly typed that with a straigh face, my experience of BT engineers co-ordinating with the call centre isn't exactly positive - although each of the engineers I've had has been quite helpful). The issues we have had are with the Hob Hubs giving up, I think we are on the third one now, although that has lasted better than the first two that I think were little over a year each. The other issue is just down to the quality of the line itself and BT's inability to sort it out. It gets worse over time and takes a leap in wet weather (and they never respond quickly enough to find the issue, or detect any issues remotely so threaten to charge - I think one time when they were working my dad noted that where they lifted the plate in the road to work on a connection it was full of water to the top!). I am currently battling similar line issues with my mother-in-laws line which frequently deteriorates and never has an issue found remotely - on the times they come out they do something that results in no charge and improvement for a while. My line is much the same, with the added disadvantage of being just a touch inside the maximum distance for FTTC which drops my speed to 16Mbps (wish I hadn't run a test, I'm down to 14Mbps at the moment). I will just touch on my regular grumble that I can't move to cable because I can't get fixed IPv4 and IPv6 on cable (well, I can get a single IPv4 for about £10 or £15 per month more than I currently pay as of my last check). -- Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. | https://www.aptanet.com/ | 023 9238 0001 Vice Chair, FSB Portsmouth & SE Hampshire Branch | http://www.fsb.org.uk/ = Registered in England | Company No: 4905028 | Registered Office: Ralls House, Parklands Business Park, Forrest Road, Denmead, Waterlooville, Hants, PO7 6XP -- Please post to: Hampshire@mailman.lug.org.uk Web Interface: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hampshire LUG URL: http://www.hantslug.org.uk --
[Hampshire] Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG meeting Saturday, 19th January 2019
The next Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Linux Users Group meeting will be this coming Saturday, 19th January 2019 from 1pm to 6pm in the Broad Oak Social Club, Hilsea. Talks start at 3pm. http://www.portsmouth.lug.org.uk/venue.html This month we have a talk from Andrew Howe: Load Balancing using the Linux Kernel Andrew is a FLOSS enthusiast from Southampton, currently working as a Linux engineer at Loadbalancer.org in Portsmouth. This talk will provide an overview of load balancing and how Linux is used to do it. While ‘application aware’ user-space load balancing software is all the rage these days, the Linux kernel contains a rock solid load balancing solution which is hard to beat in terms of raw performance. With a little knowledge, it's possible to build a Linux load balancer to meet the needs of even the busiest networks and environments. Sandwiches, tech talk and excellent company guaranteed as usual, of course. Talks start at 3pm. http://www.portsmouth.lug.org.uk/venue.html Mince Pi(e)s and Christmas Cheer. No talk this month, but I'm sure there will be plenty of good conversation, and I will bring some mince pies to go with the usual sandwiches. To keep with the theme, if you're doing something interesting with a Raspberry Pi why not bring it along. The next Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Linux Users Group meeting will be this coming Saturday, 17th November 2018 from 1pm to 6pm in the Broad Oak Social Club, Hilsea. Talks start at 3pm. http://www.portsmouth.lug.org.uk/venue.html All things being equal and with a fair wind I hope to have some slides put together for a short talk on: A Journey into Ansible using Dokuwiki This won't be an in depth dive into Ansible, but a walk through some of the decisions I've made in putting together an Ansible playbook to automatically deploy Dokuwiki to my intranet server, and upgrade when a new version is released. Dokuwiki is an open source wiki that doesn't require a database. This install covers uploading, extracting and symlinking the PHP code, configuring Apache to server the site and using variables and templates to make things as generic as possible. I've also recently put together a basic GUI to CLI command using PySimpleGUI and then made it a standalone executable with PyInstaller. There's no talk, but if anyone is interested I will make sure I have the code with me. Sandwiches, tech talk and excellent company guaranteed as usual, of course. Talks start at 3pm. http://www.portsmouth.lug.org.uk/venue.html Since it is International Repair day why not bring along a problem that will breath new life into an old computer! I have a few lightning talks available if anyone is interested - i.e. no slides, minimal preparation and a quick demonstration! 1. A quick demo of the new Telegram channel so you can see if it is of interest. 2. A quick demo of converting old cassette tapes to mp3, ogg, or etc. using a USB device an Audacity. ...which may lead on to... 3. Using Gerbera to share media - very quick to setup, but equally basic in terms of interface; I would be interested in alternatives that are lightweight and install alongside other services on an existing server. The next Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Linux Users Group meeting will be this coming Saturday, 15th September 2018 from 1pm to 6pm in the Broad Oak Social Club, Hilsea. Talks start at 3pm. http://www.portsmouth.lug.org.uk/venue.html This month is a bring-a-box meet, although I hope to find a few minutes between now and Saturday to do a short talk on how to use the Telegram group that I am trialing, and discuss what people think about it and other possible ways to encourage more people to come along to meets. I also plan to bring along a USB cassette deck that I have been using recently to transfer some old audio cassettes to MP3/OGG, so if anyone is interested in how easy it is to do this on Linux with Audacity I can demonstrate. It isn't the last word in audio quality, but is more than good enough for spoken word (I've not tried music yet as I generally used vinyl). "Jeff will be talking about his experiences with ANTLR4, creating a small, domain-specific expression language for a Java application. There will be a real example, rather than a lot of theory on lexical analysis, grammars or parsing, but he will run through the basics of defining a lexer and a grammar, show the simple statements required to build a parse tree and the benefits of using listener methods, over visitors, to handle evaluation as ANTLR4 walks the parse tree. He will demonstrate adding ANTLR4 to your Java Maven project, how to generate the lexer and grammar source code from your definitions and how to extend the base listener class with your own implementations." The next Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Linux Users Group meeting will be this coming Saturday, 20th January 2018 from 1pm to 6pm in the Broad Oak Social Club, Hilsea. Talks start at 3pm. http://www.portsmouth.lug.org.uk/venue.html With Christmas and the New Year rushing all to rapidly by I've not managed to arrange a talk this month, so we will open up the floor to Lightning Talks again. Last month we had a couple of impromptu ones that opened up discussion, so if you are unsure about doing one just think of it as opening up discussion to the floor rather than just a table :-) These are 5 minute talks with 2 minutes for questions afterwards (give or take, if there is time available there's no need to cut short a good discussion!). The subject can be anything related to Linux and Open Source, and I would encourage anyone to consider doing something whatever your level of experience. Nobody knows everything, and it is just as valuable to hear about a new user's journey as it is to hear an in depth technical talk (it is a good reminder of where we all started and problems experienced users overlook). To get you thinking here are a few suggested areas: - How you found Linux and what you like or would like to improve. - A new piece of software you have found and have found useful. - A problem you are having and would like help with. - A fun new gadget that works with or runs Linux. There is no need to put together slides, and with just 5 minutes to fill the preparation is minimal (or just wing it!). In fact there is no real pressure to fill the full 5 minutes even, if you have a tip to share the conversation will start and time will fly by! All things being equal and with a following wind I plan to do a quick "How to quit Vim" Lightning Talk. http://portsmouth.lug.org.uk/talks/201801.html Sandwiches, tech talk and excellent company guaranteed as usual, of course. [Hampshire] *NO* Portsmouth and South East Hants LUG meeting for August
A reminder that there will be no Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Linux Users Group meeting this month. This was discussed at the last meeting, but for those who weren't able to attend, a combination of ill health and a clash with Oggcamp has left us short handed. (If anyone is attending Oggcamp, I am on the crew so will be around somewhere trying to be useful.) Normal service will be resumed next month, with a meeting on 16th September. ** Call for talks ** If anyone has a talk they would like to give please let me know (particularly if it is for September as that will save me trying to find some time to think of something and put it together!). Also, if anyone has any suggestions of things they would be interested in hearing about that would be great too. All being well I should be heading to the venue when I get there to scope things out as I'm on the crew. The basic principle is to use a web server on the host to validate the certificate when you obtain it, but not actually install it with the script. If you aren't running a web server on the same box as the mail server then you can spin up a temporary one with the script, but I am so I haven't tried that option (I think it is the --standalone switch). The incantation I used was: sudo /opt/certbot/certbot-auto certonly --dry-run -w /var/www/domain/webroot/ -d mail.example.com well, actually it wasn't quite, that one has the --dry-run to to through the motions but not do anything, just remove when you have everything sorted :) I don't have the tool installed from a package, it was originally installed before the rename and I've not checked back to see if there is a PPA yet (I'll probably do that when I do my upgrade which is due any day now - ish!). A quick breakdown (for anyone not familiar) is: certbot-auto - the command (complete with path in my case) certonly - just obtain the certificate, don't try to install it (at the moment there only look to be options to install for apache and nginx, I prefer to do the editing myself --dry-run - just puts it into test mode -w - gives the path to the root directory of the domain required for the certificate, the script puts files in here to check for remotely -d - gives the certificate domian (and you can use multiple -d .. for mulitple domains in a single certificate) There's a selection of options to play with, but those are the ones I used. I then had to manually install them into my Dovecot config, but that was just a case of changing the existing lines. The certificates are installed in directories under /etc/letsencrypt, so in the /etc/dovecot/conf.d/ssl.conf file (for example) you have something like: ssl_cert = https://www.aptanet.com/ | 023 9238 0001 Vice Chair, FSB Portsmouth & SE Hampshire Branch | http://www.fsb.org.uk/ = Registered in England | Company No: 4905028 | Registered Office: Ralls House, Parklands Business Park, Forrest Road, Denmead, Waterlooville, Hants, PO7 6XP -- Please post to: Hampshire@mailman.lug.org.uk Web Interface: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hampshire LUG URL: http://www.hantslug.org.uk --

I've since moved away from that setup, > and with a more normal environment it all worked first time. Yes, I've got that issue with a couple of servers I run internally. I haven't quite decided how to proceed with it yet; the servers are internal servers, so I could quite reasonably use self signed certificates, but I've had a couple of issues with doing that in some cases - the main one being sharing a Keepass database between machines. That works fine with Dropbox, but I want to move it through to my Nextcloud box, which will be internally hosted, and the Keepass client on Android doesn't like connecting to a self signed https instance (well it would, but I have to accept all certificates rather than add an exception just for the one server, which doesn't feel right). I could open things up to the internet, possibly even only when I do the renewal checks, but I'm not entirely happy about putting my internal DNS entries on a public server, it seems wrong having private addresses on public servers! > Second, was that if you install the script manually, and run the cron > with the recommended --no-self-upgrade option, then it doesn't update > itself. I have had it fall far enough behind that the script then stops > working and fails to update your certificates. Running it manually > without the --no-self-upgrade flag fixed that relatively quickly, but > I need to make sure the script gets updated regularly. I had that once, but decided to let the script update itself. I was getting emails from the cron job anyway so I would see the update happen; it now emails as part of the script so I had to disable my own email when I found I was getting two each time! I'm still running on the manual install, but I see there are some Letsencrypt packages in the Ubuntu repositories now (not caught up with the fact that it is Certbot now!), so I'm not sure how that will impact things - I may try it when I upgrade my server to 16.04. ** end quote [Samuel Penn via Hampshire] -- Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. | https://www.aptanet.com/ | 023 9238 0001 Vice Chair, FSB Portsmouth & SE Hampshire Branch | http://www.fsb.org.uk/ = Registered in England | Company No: 4905028 | Registered Office: Ralls House, Parklands Business Park, Forrest Road, Denmead, Waterlooville, Hants, PO7 6XP -- Please post to: Hampshire@mailman.lug.org.uk Web Interface: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hampshire LUG URL: http://www.hantslug.org.uk --

I used to use StartSSL and the manual renewal and install was a pain, particularly if you'd managed to let your personal account certficate expire and lost access to the certificates you already had (thankfully I managed to merge the accounts I had when they did a system upgrade a while back). Initially the 90 day renewal on Letsencrypt seems as though it ought to be a pain, but with the automated renewal I just note that it has happened when my cron job emails me and get a nice satisfied feeling that all is working fine :) I currently look to have 13 certificates on the go, and all of those cover multiple sub domains (even if it is just the base domain and a www, but frequently a few sub domains as well (forums., gallery., wildlangstone., exim., etc.). Both current and previous boats came read to install the Haslar self stearing gear which used no electronics, although if the wind changed direction so would you! I was actually chatting about this at the last PLUG meeting and hope I can make the talk. If you look at the web page [1] you'll see that the boat in question is somewhat smaller that either of our boats (well, bar my model ones!).
