"vitriol" - no... just people saying you're not very nice... I'd

So your original comment was without any merit or offered any
contribution, and certainly not "discussing Linux related issues". As
far as I see, your criticism is that a university is wasting money by
ensuring its DHCP allocation is secure? Weird interpretation of waste.

Not "ganging up" - just on the same side by disliking your
tone/statements. Certainly not a clique, as I wouldn't know any of the
people on this list from Adam if they cut me up on the A303.
Besides, as such a proponent of "fair-comment", one would think you
would support any open and honest criticism that might be raised about

At least 20% of the five is a self-employed freelancer... In my
professional experience, there's a lot more noses in troughs in the
private sector (yesterday, I was regaled by a man pleased
with himself that he had run up $4,000 bar bills in Vegas on the
company card, and blagged a weekend in DisneyLand because the 'client
wanted to go there').

I am sincerely surprised by your posts, because on other mailing lists
you seem to respond with helpful replies, and even go as far as
correcting the posting etiquette of other people...

I also have found Bryan offensive, this is a list that I feel is
independent of which political views or which sector you work.

When individuals are giving up time and effect to help an organisation
whose primary role is to help and support others, there should be
nothing other then respect for shown to those individuals.

Although I wont be able to attend this meeting I am grateful that people
are committing time and effect into trying to ensure such meetings take
place as I will be very grateful when time allows me to go and have
somewhere to meet people who have an interest in a common subject.

I personally feel that either Bryan should reflect and apologise, or be
removed.

And for the record I am private sector employee, and I have thoughts on
many subjects including public sector spending, but I keep those for
interested and relevant parties only.

I have kept out of this so far but as a long time member of HantsLUG I
have found your general attitude in emails to the list unhelpful at the
very least.

You should be aware that the 'five man clique' you complain about are
all very respected members of HantsLUG and of the linux community in

That is offensive. Adam is most emphatically not offensive, ever that I have

No, it isn't.

It is, however, appreciative of the amount of effort one volunteer is
putting into getting us a meeting place for free. There is no way that
your post could possibly aid that endeavour; it could - likely, would -
discourage that volunteer to the extent that he will think twice about
helping us out in future. This is not helpful - to anyone.

Yes, everyone should feel free to speak their minds. But they should also

You spoke of "tax dollars". Are you a UK tax payer? If not, you have no

I, conversely, consider my post to be fair-comment.

Perhaps this is a sycophantic community, I don't know yet, however I
think it's in the community interest that people feel free to speak
their minds.

Unless what you're looking for is a stagnant community of "yes men".

As a taxpayer, asymmetric taxpayer, in so far as I pay a lot and receive
very little in return - I believe I have every right to criticize
bureaucratic inefficiency.

Is there really someone from that University who is going to say? "Oh,
what cheek, he mocked our clumsy DHCP setup - henceforth and forthwith I
will terminate all access permissions for Linux users and make Windows 7

Grow up, and message me on list. I'm sure this has got more to do with

[Hampshire] [IMPORTANT] Networking for this weekend's Bring a Box meeting

2011-03-31 Thread Chris Malton

Hi everyone,

(With apologies for not sending via Adam first)

Unfortunately, after some discussion with the Systems team at the
University, I have had the wipe the DHCP database due to a fundamental
flaw in the web form used to submit the data.

If you have already submitted DHCP requests, please do so again.
You will now have to agree to both the University and the departmental
terms of use for computing facilities, and that's something I've had
imposed on me.

If you don't register by the weekend, hopefully, upon turning up and
connecting, you'll get the DHCP page appear as soon as you try to visit
any other site, and then if you give it (at most) 10 minutes, it'll
re-register you and all will be well and you'll have proper networking.
I'm working to make this instant, but it does depend on a few bits of
magic that aren't so easy to implement.

Look forward to dealing with all the problems from this on Saturday.
