The talk itself will probably be around 40 minutes; with the
refreshments and the lightning talks I guess it will be an hour or a bit
over in total.

Thanks for the heads up Thomas.

I'm hoping to be there, any idea how long the talk is?

hear about how we used Python and Linux to make a boat sail itself,

- Why is it so hard to make a robot sail?
- What happened to us at the World Robotic Sailing Championship (besides
winning it)?
- Who are ROS and Brian?
- What tools did we combine to make the Black Python sail?

The West coast? That's some impressive navigation. There's an ongoing
contest to make a small robot boat cross the Atlantic, but as far as I
know it's not yet been managed:

Because you can? ;)

I use an ancient Autohelm if I want an upgrade from lashing the tiller (which I
used to use a couple of jam cleats for on my last boat - RIP). Both current and
previous boats came read to install the Haslar self stearing gear which used no
electronics, although if the wind changed direction so would you!

I was actually chatting about this at the last PLUG meeting and hope I can make
the talk. If you look at the web page [1] you'll see that the boat in question
is somewhat smaller that either of our boats (well, bar my model ones!).

I did consider starting a LUG regarding using Linux on boats, but thought my
planned name of NautiLUG might have drawn the wrong membership - maybe that's
why the LUG never actually setup the lists for me ;)

A speaker introducing the conference after the competition did trace the
history of autonomous sailing back to Francis Drake rigging fire ships
to be blown into the Spanish Armada. We were trying to achieve a bit
more control, however!

And hopefully less fire :-)

I remember an article some years ago about a robot auto-navigation
voyage in which, as so often happens in cars, they'd put in a slightly
wrong name and the yacht ended up on the west coast of America, rather
than in Wales.

It was an April issue, but I feel sure the story was true :-)
