[HCDX] Mike's DX archive
I've been converting some some of my vintage DX cassettes to mp3's. Unfortunately some of my cassettes are now unplayable after being stored for three decades in less than ideal temperature and humidity conditions, and many of them were cheap quailty anyway, e.g.Maxell Low Noise, Radio Shack Concertape, or no brand at all. Some are so old that they have the Compact Cassette logo printed on the label. I have uploaded the following at http://www.box.net/shared/fuue3o65ku Radio Canada International DX Digest, July 1978 - portion of a special program hosted by Ian McFarland for the ANARC convention, held at Maison de Radio-Canada in Montreal. Radio Sandino, Nicaragua-7318, July 1979 - Sandanista clandestine station heard in midst of revolution that overthrew US-backed tinpot Anastasio Somoza. Federal Radio Corp. of Nigeria-Enugu- 6025, Aug. 8, 1981 - this actually can count as Biafra Nigerian Broadcasting Corp., Lagos -4990, June 29, 1977 - many local ads, with prices in naira and kobo. Voice of Free Chile - 15150, Aug. 1977 - some sad propaganda from the Pinochet era Argentine Annie - Falklands War propaganda station, April 1982 (I've long since lost my paper logbook from 1982. Does anyone remember this station's frequency?) Radiodiffusion Nationale du Mali-7110, Jan. 1978 WFAT-1620. Pirate station from New York area, Jan. 1, 1978 KNBI-1530 Norton, KS. DX test, March 20, 1978 WKMC-1370 Roaring Spring, PA. Sign-off with SSB, April 3, 1978 KOAM-860 Pittsburg, KS. June 28, 1977 All heard on relatively unsophisticated equipment - Panasonic RF-2200 (which I still have), using only the built-in whip, GYRO (externally rotating ferrite stick), or simple longwire. This project is still a work in progress. More vintage DX from the Carter and Reagan eras will be uploaded on box.net when I get the chance to listen and determine which cassettes are salvageable. Clips are in Ogg Vorbis (.ogg) format. Playable with Winamp, and should be compatable with other mp3 players. 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ---[Start Commercial]- Order your WRTH 2008: http://www.hard-core-dx.com/redirect2.php?id=wrth2008 ---[End Commercial]--- Hard-Core-DX mailing list Hard-Core-DX@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/hard-core-dx http://www.hard-core-dx.com/ ___ THE INFORMATION IN THIS ARTICLE IS FREE. Can any Panasonic RF-2200 owners help with the following inquiry? I have never attempted any repairs or modifications to my trusty RF-2200 in the almost 28 years that I've owned it. 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON - Original Message - From: DENNIS DAHLQUIST [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, December 29, 2005 12:37 AM Subject: Issue with my RF2200 Mike, I recently came upon your interesting website. It would seem you know a lot about shortwave radios and I was wondering if you had any ideas how I might clean the scrolling frequency readout on my RF2200? Would you happen to know if I unscrewed the unit from the back, would I be able to get to and gently wipe down the scrolling analog frequency readout that scrolls when I turn the tuning knob? I think it might be paper with the frquency designations printed on it. If I'm careful, I think I might be able to lightly brush the surface or wipe it witha cloth to get some old dust and dirt off the paper that show thru the plastic cover on the front panel. Is there any problem with an amatuer like me removing the backside screws and having a look inside? Seems like it would be pretty simple. have you ever done this? Or, do you know where and to whom I could send my radio for a inside cleaning and alignment? Any advice would be most appreciated. [HCDX] CRTC releases its annual Broadcasting Policy Monitoring Report
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has released its sixth annual Broadcasting Policy Monitoring Report. This report assesses the impact of its regulations, policies and decisions on the Canadian broadcasting industry, in light of the objectives of the Broadcasting Act. Beginning this year, publication has been moved up several months so that data contained in the report will be available to the Canadian public and the regulated industries on a more timely basis. The report deals with the radio, television, and broadcast distribution sectors, as well as social issues and the Internet. Radio: Canadians have access to 1,158 radio services, of which 867 are in English, 253 are in French, and 38 are in third languages. In 2004, Canadians listened to radio an average of 19.5 hours per week, which represents the same number of hours as in 2003. Revenues for Canadian private radio stations exceeded $1.2 billion in 2004, and profits before interest and tax came in at $224 million. Since the adoption of the CRTC's commercial radio policy in 1998, Canadian radio stations have spent more than $156 million on Canadian talent development. The city's inhabitants lit fires and rattled tin boxes filled with stones on Wednesday to try to chase away the insects, which are swarming down from North Africa and threaten to unleash the region's worst locust crisis for 15 years. The authorities have done nothing to stop this invasion. It'll destroy our crops and make us poorer, said Diop, a young Mauritanian trying to protect his city centre vegetable plot. Desert locust swarms contain up to 80 million insects per square km and can travel more than 80 miles a day. They can devastate entire crop fields in minutes, with adult locusts munching their own weight, or about two grams, of food a day. Residents in Nouakchott compared the arrival of the pink-coloured swarm to the locust invasion of 1987-89, which was the worst in 30 years and sparked fears of famine. That plague took $300 million and operations in 28 states to contain. France has said it is sending a team of experts from agronomical research centre CIRAD to Mauritania, Senegal, Mali and Niger -- all former French colonies -- to assess the scale of the latest invasion. European donors have contributed two million euros to beef up an emergency fund run by the U.N. Can anyone on this list help? Myself, I would recommend getting hold of a Panasonic RF-2000, which I think you can find for under $300 on ebay. [HCDX] South Korea Foils Airlift of Radios to North
From today's New York Times.. The article doesn't mention what brand of radio, or whether the radios they attempted to airlift covered AM FM, and SW. South Korea Foils Airlift of Radios to North By JAMES BROOKE HOLWON, South Korea, Aug. 22 - All in all, it was a perfect day for breaking North Korea's information monopoly, and Dr. Norbert Vollertsen and his band of volunteers were determined to take advantage of it. A brisk wind from the south was driving clouds and, Dr. Vollertsen hoped, large balloons carrying transistor radios north over the barbed wire of the demilitarized zone into North Korea, a country closed off from the rest of the world. But before the specially designed cargo balloons could be inflated with helium, South Korean police officers clambered aboard the truck and subdued Dr. Vollertsen, who is German, so roughly that he needed medical treatment. The law requires that organizers of rallies or demonstrations notify the local police 48 hours in advance, said Kim Bu Wook, Kangwon Province's police chief.. This was before a two-hour standoff degenerated into a shoving match between riot policemen and members of a growing international movement to break the half-century information monopoly that North Korea's Communist government has maintained over its 22 million people. Until 2000, South Korea's military sent thousands of balloons north from border towns like this one, usually in the summer when the prevailing winds were favorable. But under the so-called sunshine policy of reconciliation, South Korea has tried to avoid irritating North Korea. By blocking the private efforts to distribute radios, however, South Korea has placed itself on a collision course with Washington. Over the summer, both chambers of the United States Congress voted overwhelmingly to expand the daily Korean-language broadcasting of Radio Free Asia to 24 hours from 4 hours. By law North Koreans are allowed to have only radios and televisions that are locked onto the state frequencies. Residents with illegal tuneable sets can listen to Korean-language government broadcasts from China, Russia and South Korea, a Christian group in South Korea, and two stations financed by the United States government, Radio Free Asia and Voice of America. But few North Koreans have access to normal radios and televisions, and North Korean defectors say that information controls in North Korea are far tighter than they were in Eastern Europe under the Communists. South Korean officials said earlier this week that they would allow the balloon launchings to go ahead. But the government apparently reversed that decision to avoid provoking North Korea in anticipation of six-country negotiations over North Korea's nuclear program, scheduled to start in Beijing on Wednesday. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/23/international/asia/23KORE.html 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! [HCDX] Fw: CHU off?
I received the following inquiry from a dxer in New Zealand. I didn't do any SW listening at all during Thursday's blackout. Does anyone know if CHU went off? And if they did go off, how long did they stay off? Or did they switch to emergency power and stay on during the outage? As I type, just after 1 PM eastern (1700 UTC), I can't hear CHU at all. But that's likely due to propagation, as I can't hear WWV on 5000 or 1, and reception is poor on 15000. 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON - Original Message - From: Norrieclan [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Mike Brooker' [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, August 17, 2003 4:39 AM Subject: CHU off? [HCDX] DX during Great Eastern Blackout II
CIAO-530, CHKT-1430 and CHIN-1540 were k.o.'ed completely. CJBC-860 stayed on, but CHWO-740 was off sporadically. They didn't seem to have any special programs when they were on, just the usual nostalgia mx. CFTR-680 was off for about an hour after the power went out, with only a growlly carrier, but came back on around 1800 EDT. Of course MOJO-640 stayed on - power outages are a test of macho and separate the men from the boys. No sign of JOY-1250, presumably they were knocked off - God works in wonderful ways :) CFYZ-1280 stayed on, with emergency programming (well, duh, virtually every flight at YYZ was cancelled) The following were heard on my Grundig YB-400, powered by 6 Energizer AA cells. Re: [HCDX] RCI BC Relay Station - tail wagging dog?
Well, it will not be a hoax if such a proposal is approved in Cabinet. The (ruling) Liberal Party is in need of votes from the western provinces, in an extreme way. There are almost no Liberal seats in the western provinces. [West of Ontario] I don't think the promise of a new RCI relay site site would do much to garner Liberal votes, in the next election to be held sometime in 2004 or early 2005 after Paul Martin succeeds Jean Chrétien (it's an extremely foregone conclusion that Mr. Martin will become the next Prime Minister). Most Canadians don't even know that RCI exists. Even as a job creation project, the number of new jobs generated would be negligible. If this isn't a hoax and the transmitter were built in one of the few B.C. ridings held by the Liberals, it would be seen as a payoff or kickback for sending a Liberal MP to Ottawa. I wonder if this site was created by a former CBC/Radio-Canada staffer, with an axe to grind against a former employer.. Financially-strapped CBC has been laying off people hand over fist. 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! Re: [HCDX] Flash: New RCI Relay site: Hoax or truth?
Here's the URL: http://cbc.am/rci-bc.htm But I think it's a hoax! In my opinion CBC would use it's own web-site to spread such information. .am leads to ARMENIA! The content seems to be professional made using the VoA HF Propagation software. But everyone may download it via NIIA/ITS web-site and use or abuse this programme. A late April-fool hoax ...? I'm also going to file this one under H for hoaxes. The .am Armenian URL is a dead ringer for a bogus site. CBC has never referred to any of its radio networks as CBC-AM, even before many of CBC's AM stations (CBL-Toronto, CBM/CBF-Montreal, CBO-Ottawa, etc.) moved to FM. What I can't figurer is why would someone (a disgruntled DXer in western Canada, perhaps) who appears not to be an amateur teenage nerd when it comes to web design skills, go to all the trouble of creating such a hoax? 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! [HCDX] Re: Radio station accused of link to Tamil Tigers
A follow-up to the item about a new Toronto FM station I posted the other day. The application has been approved. http://www.broadcastermagazine.com/article.asp?id=20507 Government dismisses alleged terror links, upholds radio decision 7/16/2003 OTTAWA - Today, the federal government announced it has upheld the CRTC's decision granting Canadian Multicultural Radio a new radio station license in Toronto at 101.3 FM. Apparently dismissing complaints (see story on this site, Radio station accused of terror links [7/15/2003]) by some that the new radio station owners were backed by a terrorist group, the Canadian government issued a terse release saying, after a careful review of the petitions received by the Governor in Council, the Government of Canada announced today its decision (P.C. 2003-1049) to uphold Decision 2003-115 of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), concerning the awarding of an FM Radio license to Canadian Multicultural Radio (CMR) in the Greater Toronto Area. The new station will direct its programming primarily to the Greater Toronto Area's South Asian communities and will provide programming to a minimum of 16 cultural groups in at least 22 languages during each broadcast week. At least 48% of all ethnic programs broadcast during each broadcast week will be in the Tamil, Hindi and Filipino languages. 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! [HCDX] Radio station accused of link to Tamil Tigers
Radio station accused of link to Tamil Tigers Smear campaign alleged: Cabinet to decide this week whether to revoke licence Stewart Bell National Post Tuesday, July 15, 2003 TORONTO - The federal Cabinet is to decide this week whether to cancel a radio licence granted by the CRTC to a Toronto company with alleged links to a South Asian terrorist organization. The new station, to be launched this fall in Toronto at 101.3 FM, denies any ties to extremists and insists it is the target of a smear campaign by opponents of its plan to broadcast to the city's ethnic communities. But government officials are concerned by allegations the broadcaster is affiliated with the World Tamil Movement (WTM), a fundraising front for the Tamil Tigers, a Sri Lankan terrorist group. The RCMP is aware of the allegations and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service has been advising the government on the matter. Cabinet is to decide by tomorrow whether to overturn the CRTC decision. The allegations come as the Cabinet is taking criticism for failing to outlaw the Tamil Tigers under Canada's Anti-Terrorist Act. Stockwell Day, the Canadian Alliance's foreign affairs critic, has launched a campaign to ban the group. Allegations of terrorist ties were brought to the attention of the CRTC last summer by Sri Lankan Canadians, who wrote letters opposing a radio licence application by Canadian Multicultural Radio. The letters claimed the numbered company behind the radio bid was tied to the WTM. The letters also claim WTM volunteers had gone door to door in Tamil neighbourhoods in Toronto to intimidate Sri Lankans into supporting the radio licence bid. The CRTC approved the licence anyway on April 17. Denis Carmel, a CRTC spokesman, said of the thousands and thousands of responses to the proposed station, only a few raised concerns about terrorism and the station responded to all the allegations in full. We felt there was a competitive process and people were being a little too passionate, he said. The language of these letters was vague and there was a lot of interventions, most of them favourable. The Privy Council Office has since received 47 petitions seeking an appeal of the decision. They have been referred to the Department of Canadian Heritage, which has made a recommendation to Cabinet. It must announce its decision by July 16. Several of the petitions allege a link to the Tamil Tigers, also known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam or LTTE. Though the organization has not been banned, the federal government has frozen since the fall of 2001 on suspicion of terrorist links. It is well known in the Sri Lankan community that the people who are behind the licence ... are the fronts for the LTTE's major organizers in Canada, said one petition. The station denies the claims. S. Sivakumaran, the radio station's chief operating officer, said some of those who complained were supporters of competing bids. The company has tried to track them down to serve them with defamation suits, but has not been able to find them, he said. I don't even know if some of these people exist. He said the station has responded to each of the allegations in detail and will make its written response available after the Cabinet decision is announced. It's a smear campaign, he said. I could sense that, from having looked at these appeals, it's a joint effort by some of the members of our community who did not get the licence and some of these same people wrote support for the other applicants during the application process. The allegations do not concern members of the radio station team but rather their relatives and friends, he said. They are trying to say that he's got a friend of so-and-so, he's got a relative. We're in no position to comment about a third party. It's ridiculous Post-Sept. 11, everyone's worried about terrorist link and terrorist things and whoever is doing the strategy for these guys has told them to write stuff like this because it gets everyone anxious and everyone's attention. If [members of the station's board] have any links, I'd be sure that the Privy Council would get the RCMP and CSIS to give them a report. He said neither agency had contacted the company concerning any investigation. The Tamil Tigers have frequently used terrorist tactics such as suicide bombings and political assassinations during a two-decade insurgency that sought independence for the island's ethnic Tamil minority. The violence was financed largely by expatriate Tamil communities, particularly in Canada. CSIS has estimated the Tigers raised millions in Canada through front organizations and crime. The Tigers agreed to a ceasefire last year and entered peace talks with the government. But they walked away from the negotiations in April and there have been reports the LTTE is preparing for renewed war. I can tell you for sure that concerns with respect to security that have been expressed, the RCMP is aware of them, said
[HCDX] Canada Post announces strike deadline
A very old, hackneyed headline that gets trotted out every few years. I've lost count of the number of postal strikes and strike threats in this country. Jul. 11, 2003. 02:53 PM Canada Post announces strike deadline Impact on small business could be 'devastating' CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - There has been more than five years of galloping telecommunications growth since Canada's last postal strike, but the country's dependence on deliveries of what savvy Internet users derisively call snail mail hasn't really abated, say experts. In fact, in the face of a July 18 strike deadline by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, one business lobby warned today that a postal stoppage would pack all the devastating economic impact of SARS and mad cow disease combined. We've been hit by so much uncertainty: the Iraqi war, the border-crossing issue, the rising dollar, SARS and BSE (mad cow disease), said Garth Whyte of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. This postal strike has the potential of being SARS and BSE combined to our membership. Whyte said a federation survey during the November 1997 strike estimated the shutdown was costing member businesses about $200 million a day. Last month, the 45,000 members of CUPW gave their union a 92 per cent strike mandate. Their contract expired Jan. 31. The strike deadline is set for 12:01 a.m. next Friday. The union and the corporation, while still hopeful of reaching a deal, are at an impasse over several key issues, including salaries, subcontracting, retirement, workload and work safety. Union president Deborah Bourque said today there's no reason to write off Canada Post despite the increase of e-mail and heavy competition from the courier industry. Last year, Canada Post moved 9.8 billion pieces of mail, a significant drop from the 11 billion carried in the year preceding the 1997 strike. But at 37 million pieces of mail per day and with an economic impact of more the $2 billion annually on Canada's gross domestic product, the postal service still packs quite a wallop. There is no question that a lot of customers are using electronic means to pay their bills but that is still a minority of customers, and that's not the only function of Canada Post in the retail sector, said Diane Brisebois of the Retail Council of Canada. Retailers, especially smaller ones, are often dependent on the post for things such as promotional flyers, credit card invoices and receiving and shipping products. A postal strike for them is quite devastating. Brisebois said private carriers simply can't fill the gap during a strike, and tend to give top priority to existing customers. If you're a small merchant who hasn't used their services, you're at the bottom of the list. You might not even be able to get through to their 1-800 number or regional sales rep - assuming they service your area. John Gustavson of the Canadian Marketing Association said Canada Post continues to play as big a role as ever in the direct marketing sector. When you order something over the Internet, somebody still has to deliver it, and Canada Post delivers a huge volume of product. As a representative of the Crown corporation's largest group of customers, Gustavson said he was told directly Thursday by the presidents of both Canada Post and CUPW that they were quite confident a settlement could be reached. He also said there's a lot more at stake for Canada Post and its workers than just a labour disruption. Every time there has been a postal strike, some mail volume has disappeared and not come back, said Gustavson. We think that would be far more so (the case) in this day and age, as more and more people learn to use electronic means of taking care of their business. 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! Re: [HCDX] Grundig YB400PE
The Yacht Boy 400PE is a good, though not stellar, DX performer. It can pull in some tough signals, but my impression is that it really wasn't designed with any serious DX work in mind. Instead, it seems to have been designed for day-to-day listening of major broadcasters (which is exactly what I use it for). It has incredibly good audio for a radio its size (**much** better than the Sony 7600GR), and two well-chosen filters. The Yacht Boy is weaker than the 7600GR when it comes to sensitivity. I use my 7600GR to listen to Kol Israel, something I could never do with the Grundig. The lack of a sync detector is a big minus, too, for DX'ing. Virtually all of my serious DX is domestic MW, and so far the Yacht Boy (what do they call it in German? der Bootknabe?) is an adequate performer, though it still won't beat my 25 year old Pansaonic RF-2200. I will also use it to listen to SW broadcasters (and I did hear Kol Isreal on it, earlier this evening). I don't bother much with the RF-2200 for SW, as it's such a pain to tune accurately. Like the RFB-45 which it replaces, the YB400PE will also be my travel portable. I don't leave home without a AM/FM/SW radio. The RF-2200 is too hefty for traveling. It's only a portable when compared to, say, a Collins R-390. Another weakness is battery life. Frankly, the Yacht Boy is terrible in this regard. I intend to run it on AC power as much as possible. 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! [HCDX] Grundig YB400PE
After 9½ years of service, several trips to the Kripalu Center and other yoga retreats, and a pilgrimage to India, my 1993 Panasonic RFB-45 virtually died. One day it was working fine; I was listening to Imus on WFAN in the morning, but at lunch hour I tried to listen to Jim Rome on WGR-550 and found the tuning had completely conked out. (since CHUM axed the sports, I've been taking my dx rig to work, just to listen to Rome!) Since the cost to have it fixed would be almost as much as a new radio, I chose the latter option. Yesterday I got a Grundig Yacht Boy 400 PE, for $CDN195 at Bay-Bloor Radio, a long-established electronics shop in downtown Toronto at -- DUH!! -- the corner of Bay and Bloor streets. The YB400PE is slightly larger and maybe an ounce or two heftier than the RFB-45, and takes 6 AA batteries, not 4. The jury is still out on battery life. I haven't done any serious dxing on it yet, but so far I like it. It's got some features the RFB-45 didn't have, like a clock display that doesn't disappear when the radio is turned on, 40 pre-sets (RFB-45 had only 18) and a dial light. Of course for serious AM dxing, it won't beat my trusty old 1978 RF-2200 that's been pulling in DX since the Carter administration. What's with the stupid name Yacht Boy? Why don't they call it a Yacht Girl, given the typical male predilection for slapping feminine monickers on cars, boats, and other machinery. Hopefully this YB400PE will pick up as much good karma as my RFB-45 did. Maybe I will take it with me on another Indian pilgrimage, to Kerala and Tamil Nadu, later this decade! 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! Re: [HCDX] [radiostamps] PHILARADIO Voice of America
a.. Voice of America - On August 1, 1967, the U.S. Post Office issued a five-cent Voice of America stamp, and here are some of the covers that were available at the time. SWL F-15873 In 1986 Canada Post issued a stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp./Société Radio-Canada. The stamp was officially unveiled at the 1986 ANARC convention in Montreal. There was also a Radio Canada International stamp, issued circa 1971 or 72. There could be some other Canadian radio-related stamps that I'm not aware of. I am not a stamp collector, though I often buy some nice commemoratives to use on letters. 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 will be out soon. Re: [HCDX] DX-Camp Bavaria, November 2002
And R New Ireland starts its program on 3905 at 1930 with the melody of a well known German song (Muss i denn zum Städtele hinaus). The melody is the same as the song by Elvis Presley Wooden Heart. The Elvis song also contains some of the German lyrics. 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 will be out soon.
