Re: [HCDX] [IRCA] Trying to figure something out...
Late reply on this Paul. Down south (i.e. here), there seem to be periods around the equinoxes when signals from east Asia and Oceania peak near local sunset at the transmitter, and also at local sunrise at the receiver. There is speculation that low loss ducting between E and F layers of the ionosphere might be involved, with the ionosphere tilting at the terminator to accept or deliver high angle signals. I wonder if that is happening in your case? Of course, at this time of year, Asians heard here seem more likely to peak when there is maximum darkness between the transmitter and receiver, with occasional instances of sunset/sunrise peaks, and these seem unpredictable. best wishes, Nick At 17:44 25-11-16, Paul B. Walker, Jr. wrote: ... One of my regular visitors is AFN 810 The Eagle from Yokota Air Base in Japan, with 50,000 watts. I know what it starts to break up at sunrise, that's obvious.. but it's never really present before 1830UTC, why is that? It's still dark in Japan, barely past Midnight local time, so one would think I could hear it well when it's dark in both places. Also why does the signal take such dramatic dives? Those dives happen everyday. I'm sure there's a reason for this and with the extreme cold I'm now dealing with, I just like to figure this out so I can figure otu the best times to go out and maximize the signal I hear/can get. I assume short wave and medium wave will be little different from listening on land, and listening in the bowels of an iron ship might be similar to listening in an apartment block built of iron girders, albeit on the move? Medium wave could be quite different. Some magnificent ground wave in the daytime, and rather like a coastal Beverage antenna DXpedition at night, based on my experiences 1000 km. offshore in the North Pacific on several occasions. BUT this was with a decent outside antenna (I was lucky enough to use an 8m high vertical, matching transformer and coax lead in). Inside a ship there is a big problem with using a radio with an internal antenna , as there will be large signal attenuation from all the iron and large amounts of local electrical noise. Holding such a radio up to a porthole might help some. On a container ship with few passengers, she will likely get to know the crew members who work on the bridge. They may be sympathetic to letting her listen on the bridge's HF radio, if they have one, depending on how important they regard monitoring 2182 kHz.
