And, I should have noted that there are many articles by John in the
IRCA Reprints, just search for his name. Read them just to enjoy
John's writing style, as just mentioned by Carl, but of course, tons
of worthwhile information as well.

I then brought the ice filled trash can to be bottom of my 3 steps,

That's one majorly solid chunk of ice and since McGrath, Alaska
won't see above freezing temperatures for any length of time till
April or so, I'm good for awhile.

That sled holds my radio and recording gear... load up the sled and
take it down the KSKO driveway to my "listening post", which is the

693khz JOAB started producing audio about 1245UTC and there was
enough quality there for at least a brief time to almost tell what
they were saying. WEaker then 774khz JOUB, but less noise and
clearer audio. About 1300UTC, 693khz had fair signal and started
producing some halfway decent audio but with splatter from KGGF but
JOUB Was soon ravaged away by that schlop splatter and faded into
the ether but came back a few minutes later with audio but it wasnt
very understandable.

It's now 1402UTC and I think mostly anything useful has burned off

As for Nov 20th, nadda... I slept in because I was so tired and
didn't get up till 1530UTC

2019-03-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

First rule is to see what's already available.

bcblog had its last submission less than two hours ago.

Does anyone know what happened to #mwdx?

Even ye olde DXFishbarrel can
help http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/test/display.htm
Obviously most relevance to the northwest DXer, but if the thing is
lit up like a Christmas tree in the evening, checking for TAs
anywhere in America might be productive, and if it's lit up at your
local sunrise, it may mean that conditions are good overall, and that
switching on the radio would not be amiss.

Re: [HCDX] [IRCA] Trying to figure something out...

2016-11-27 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Late reply on this Paul. Down south (i.e. here), there seem to be
periods around the equinoxes when signals from east Asia and Oceania
peak near local sunset at the transmitter, and also at local sunrise
at the receiver. There is speculation that low loss ducting between
E and F layers of the ionosphere might be involved, with the
ionosphere tilting at the terminator to accept or deliver high angle
signals. I wonder if that is happening in your case?

Of course, at this time of year, Asians heard here seem more likely
to peak when there is maximum darkness between the transmitter and
receiver, with occasional instances of sunset/sunrise peaks, and
these seem unpredictable.

best wishes,

Nick

The signal can be quite good at times, but it doesn't last too long and
fades out to mush but often comes back

Also, it peaks about an hour before local sunset (sunrise is 1930UTC) and
is gone just as the sun begins to rise.

I know what it starts to break up at sunrise, that's obvious.. but it's
never really present before 1830UTC, why is that? It's still dark in Japan,
barely past Midnight local time, so one would think I could hear it well
when it's dark in both places.

Also why does the signal take such dramatic dives? Those dives happen
everyday.

I'm sure there's a reason for this and with the extreme cold I'm now
dealing with, I just like to figure this out so I can figure otu the best
times to go out and maximize the signal I hear/can get.

Re: [HCDX] [IRCA] TP DX

2016-11-15 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Congratulations for getting the DX that we aren't hearing further south Paul.

1350 is an interesting one. There is a Japanese commercial station
there that is sometimes heard on the coast.

567 and 594 are heard here in parallel, NHK1, also Japanese. You
might find that 729 is also parallel.

954, 1134, 1179 are usually Japanese commercial stations here when
conditions are good. 1197 might be also.

1208 is an oddball frequency, was that what you meant?

1503 might be NHK1 also, //594 etc.

It sounds as if you might be learning a little Japanese in the near future.

(and, is 1577 back on 1575 now? Is it // 810?)

best wishes,

Nick

Over half of what I heard, if you subtract the noise, would've been very

Had a very loud, clear listenable signal from AFN The Eagle 810khz and a
mushy signal from them on 1575.

Had mildly to somewhat good listenable Aussies on 1116(weak to poor, noisey
and hard to understand),792 newscast with fair to good signal but some
noise, 774 fair but noisey with news, 612(probably the best of the aussies)
and 963 (fairly strong with music but lots of noise). All of them producing
very listenable audio on peaks

My loudest Asians were 567, 1350 and 1566. 1566 was like a local here.

Also had Pyongyang on 657khz, being splattered to death by KFAR 660, 10kw
non directional from 300 miles to my east.

Also had good signals from
567, good signal, a little static and noise.
594 almost sounded alot like the 567 signal, slightly less noisey and a bit
stronger then 567
729 a little noise but fairly strong, man talking
954 (fairly strong but very noisy and fadey),
1134 sounded like a morning type show, lots of energy and laughing and
several characters talking. very solid, strong, steady signal, not much
fading, just a bit of noise
1179 strong but a little noise and some splatter from something else
1197 kind a echoy, and noisy,
1208 sounds like it was playing an instrumental version of Home On The
Range over and over again, it went on for over 10 minutes!

[HCDX] Taiwan or China on 6145//7185

2006-11-18 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
I'm looking for a parallel for a MW broadcaster, having heard what I
think may be Taiwan (R. Taiwan International) on 1521 kHz a couple of
mornings ago. Among possible parallels I see listed are 6145 and
7185, which were indeed parallel just before 1800UT.

But, there is also a Chinese broadcaster on those two frequencies
that acts as a jammer, isn't there? Does anyone know which one
dominates on the North American west coast?

best wishes,

Nick

Can some one help me I would like to build a EWE, I have read so much

there some where on the internet that I could go to and find all this info
about the EWE.

The K9AYloop Yahoo group has the original EWE articles posted in its file
storage area, Russell. (www.groups.yahoo.com) Joining this or the
FlagsandPennantAntennas group should get you lots of info. I couldn't find
a group devoted to the EWE, but others might be more helpful.

Congratulations on the TA reception, Bogdan. Keep looking for them, as

She's taking a portable sw receiver, and I'll be arming her with schedules

Does anyone know about, or have experience of, radio reception at sea? I
assume short wave and medium wave will be little different from listening on
land, and listening in the bowels of an iron ship might be similar to
listening in an apartment block built of iron girders, albeit on the move?

Medium wave could be quite different. Some magnificent ground wave in the
daytime, and rather like a coastal Beverage antenna DXpedition at night,
based on my experiences 1000 km. offshore in the North Pacific on several
occasions. BUT this was with a decent outside antenna (I was lucky enough
to use an 8m high vertical, matching transformer and coax lead in). Inside
a ship there is a big problem with using a radio with an internal antenna ,
as there will be large signal attenuation from all the iron and large
amounts of local electrical noise. Holding such a radio up to a porthole
might help some.

On a container ship with few passengers, she will likely get to know the
crew members who work on the bridge. They may be sympathetic to letting her
listen on the bridge's HF radio, if they have one, depending on how
important they regard monitoring 2182 kHz.

Hope it works out.

best wishes,

Nick

Can you comment on which laptops are the best/worst for generating RFI?

In addition to John's comment about not RFI problems with
laptops...remember that at Grayland we use electrically sanitary coax
lead-ins for our antennas with separate antenna ground from receiver
ground. A loop antenna next to most laptops will show RFI!
