No luck here and I tried. I may .. may have had a few gurgles of a carrier
but i cant be sure that wasntanything other then things i think i heard.

If a solar storm wasnt in progress, i wouldve stood a chance.

If theyre on this summer, i suspect I'll stand an even chance of hearing
them

2023-02-19 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Glenn, if you actually worked 6-7 days a week 16-20 hours a day like Les, a
mistake would be understandable. If DX'ers cant figure out their local
time from the time posted in Pacific time, then they need to go back to
middle school and learn time zones.

[HCDX] The SMALL World That Is The DXing Hobby

2022-02-12 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
For those of you unaware, I live in McGrath, Alaska managing the day to day
operations of an NPR Radio station, KSKO, serving about 500 miles of the
alaskan interior.

I'm a member of another hobby site and facebook page, HFUnderground.
Geared towards, well.. HF/SW but we do talk AM radio there.

On Friday, someone I didn't recognize popped by the radio station but
vaguely knew my name. We got talking and it turns out he's an HFU member.
He was here in McGrath to fix some equipment for the FAA.

[HCDX] PBS North Korea 855kHz

2022-02-10 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I don't recall seeing anyone in the US ever logging this and I didn't think
I would hear it, but it showed up this past Tuesday here in Alaska.
They've got some transmitter hum and a bit of a het, plus KICY 850's audio
is really loud and wide. KICY is almost impossible to null.

BUT you can make out.. barely, the tell tale operatic North Korean music in

it's daytime tower site after losing the lease on its night site.
Normally, KKDZ is 5KW Non directional from 12am to local sunset (that hasnt
changed) and goes to the 5KW DA from Sunset to 12midnight to protect KWSU
Pullman, WA until it signs off at midnight.

On Saturday January 29th at about 11pm AK Time, KKDZ's 1,250 non
directional watts made the 1500 or so mile trip to McGrath, Alaska in two
shorts spurts as evidenced in my two recordings here.

Clip #1:

Clip #2:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_DAxnOoz967tEJ1HJ_qiq1PkRvAATWz5/view?usp=sharing

This was the only Seattle station I recall hearing that night that was out
of the ordinary (IE: A station I dont normally here.

These can’t be connected a reciever. They are inductively coupled. There
are construction articles for these online. I’ve copied Gary, the creator
of these so maybe he can link to the construction articles.

one can null. The 5" FSL's out perform box loops 3-4 feet in size.

I didnt want to totally null things out in this case, to show an example of

[HCDX] AM Radio In Alaska

2022-01-27 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I've shared my DX clips from well outside Alaska, but I wanted to show just
how far AM's in Alaska carry and how good the signals can be.

Thought you'd like to hear these clips. I've heard ALL AM's in Alaska, but
one.. KTKN 930 which is blocked by KNSA 930 Unalakleet here, only 180 miels
away with 5KW non directional 24/7

KZPA 900 Fort Yukon, Alaska isnt owned by KSKO, but simulcasts us a good
portion of the day. 5KW Non D from 350 miles away NE of us . I recorded
this clip this morning during the KSKO morning show. 6khz audio on my
radio, STL is a 128K stereo mp3 stream. Audio:

KLAM 1450 is 250 watts from about 350 miles away, SE of us. The whine/het
you hear is from Iran with 400kw. KLAM is owned by a guy who is the morning
news anchor for a Fairbanks TV station and he's originally from Cordova.

I tuned the dials late at night last week and ran across the fairly common
KSJX 1500 San Jose, about 2000 miles away. What caught my ear was what they
were airing.

It was a Vietnamese song and while I didn't understand one iota of what
they were saying, I recognized the melody immediately they were singing
a vietnamese language version of the 1959 hit "Love Potion #9" by The
Searchers... and I happened to be recording!

Here's the audio:

I had KSJX the other day with their Vietnamese programming and caught
this The Searchers "Love Potion #9".. being sung in Vietnamese!!

[HCDX] All this solar storm stuff

2022-01-16 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
i wish it would cease.. this is getting old lol... for those of you in
the lower 48 it enhances or causes unique reception to be possible.
However, up here in the 49th state, even the slightest atmospheric vomit
totally ruins radio reception. In my now over 3 years combined of being in
alaska, ive never been proven wrong when I go outside during a solar event.

I have had some evidence of enhanced or add reception right before a solar
storm, but its brief .. one day and not usually shockingly good.

Reception up here hasnt been garbage but for the last month and a half or
so, its been pretty dull and meak.

Just my ramblings and 1 cents worth on a Sunday

[HCDX] KVRI 1600 Blaine, WA

2022-01-15 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
This station targets the punjab community in the Vancouver area and not
exactly a surprise, but it is incredibly strong here. It's 10KW/6 tower
night pattern is right along the waterfront and beams right up the coast.
If I draw a line from it's tower array and main lobe, its pointed almost
dead center at my general area.

Not unexpected but still amazing considering KVRI is 1500 miles away! They
are my most consistent station... the strongest, most regular. I hear the
50kw'ers from Vancouver 1320,, 1470, 1130, 730, etc but this one tops
them all by noticeable amounts.

Here's some audio of the station with the audio filter widened to 6khz on
my CC CRane Skywave with my FSL loop tuned up:

[HCDX] HLCA 972 Vs KFBX 970 With 2 FSL's

2022-01-14 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
With two FSLs, you can do some real good nulling.. if takes a little bit of
experimenting, patience along with trial and error.

KFBX is on 970khz about 250 miles NE of me with 10kw Non Directional full
time. It can put a very respectable signal into McGrath.
HLCA is on 972kHz over 3000 miles away from me with 1.5 megawatts day and
750Kw night from a 2 tower array.

One or the other can cause a serious, loud het on the other or the audio
can bleed over depending on how wide the radios audio bandwith is set to.

Heres two examples of me nulling out KFBX's het and any audio to clean up
HLCA. In both clips, you'll hear a jumped whining hetty mess and then you
can tell I begin live tuning to bring in HLCA. At the end I do the reverse
and tune HLCA out so you can see its really working and being done.

[HCDX] Reception Oddity/Vagaries Of Transpolar Paths

2022-01-10 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
In reviewing some of my audio, one of my logs from Thursday the 6th is 1215
Absolute UK and fairly well at that in short spurts. What makes this odd is
NOTHING ELSE from the UK was "in" at the time.. no Talk Sport on 1089 or
BBC on 909, the big guns. Talk Sport is usually the first UK signal I'll
hear and very well at that.

I heard 1215 last year a few times, but not very good.
I heard the BBC on 909 once or twice

Usually I have the big guns first and the lil' uns second.

[HCDX] VIDEO: An Introduction to AM DX Tests

2022-01-02 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
-- Forwarded message -
From: Les Rayburn
Date: Sun, Jan 2, 2022 at 9:46 AM
Subject: Re: [nrc-am] VIDEO: An Introduction to AM DX Tests
To: DX Central
Cc: via NRC-AM

Loyd has produced another great video for his YouTube channel. DX Central
provides some of the best, and most interesting content for DX’ers.

A few notes about why the NRC CPC decided to change our standards for QSL
verifications from DX Tests:

- All the work is done by volunteers whose time is limited.

- Written DX Reports require considerably more time to verify than a short
recording. There are lots of reasons for this; stations are provided with
test material but often alter it to include their own programming,
announcements, etc. Getting an accurate record of what the station recorded
can be a challenge. DX’ers clock in the shack may be off by several minutes
or more, making it hard to verify the sequence of reported parts of their
reception, etc. Trust me, it’s labor intensive. We still welcome them, and
try to include them in the reports.

- We’re also specifying emailed reception files in .mp3, .wav, or .mp4
video format. These are the easiest for us to verify, and the videos make
great material for Loyd to include on his YouTube channel.

- “Legacy formats” such as cassettes, Compact Disc (CD), or 1/4”
reel-to-reel simply require too much time and legacy equipment. We can’t
continue to support those.

- Reports submitted by mail (USPS) are no longer required. Again, it’s the
time factor. Email is faster and easier for our volunteers to deal with.
Send all reception reports via email if it’s a CPC verification test.

- The explosion of remote SDR’s have lead to a sub-hobby of people “DXing”
using their computer versus an actual radio. This allows people to hear DX
tests that might otherwise be impossible due to propagation or time of day.
The problem is that some abused this by requesting QSLs for as many as 15
remote SDR’s in a single test. We now limit these requests to a single QSL
request for only one remote SDR.

We also require that any such reception be clearly identified. We have had
a few instances where people attempted to claim reception of a DX Test at a
given location, without revealing that it was heard by the use of an
internet-accessed SDR.

Personally, while I enjoy listening to remote SDRs for entertainment, I
don’t consider it DX’ing. The only exception is people who build their own
remote SDRs, antenna systems, etc in remote locations—this is common by
some Arctic DX’ers for instance. Simply benefiting from someone else’s
labor and expense to hear stations doesn’t seem like an individual
accomplishment (but your mileage may vary) To each their own.

We hope you’ll continue to enjoy the DX Tests that the CPC is able to
arrange. If you have a relationship with someone who works at an AM Radio
station and think they might be willing to do a test in the future, please
let us know. We need all the help we can get.

Thanks to Joe, Loyd, George, and Paul for all their hard work!

1550. Well, apparently Radio Zindagi posted on their facebook page earlier
today that Theyre now available on 1550.

That'll make it harder to differentiate between them and The WA station
running similar programming on 1550

[HCDX] KOGT 1600 Orange, TX To Go Silent

2021-12-28 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
It's been reported on facebook by two staffers, one current and one past
that the station is going off the air permanently December 31st. It hasn't
made it to their Facebook page or website as of a 10am AK time check, but
one of the staffers who mentioned it was their current part time engineer,
mentioned on their Facebook page. This is a surprise since they have such a
good web/social media presence and are heavy on local news and sports.

The tower owner is dismantling the tower, and the station owner isn’t the

[HCDX] KZMP 1540 Dallas SILENT

2021-12-16 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
The transmitter site has been sold and towers dismantled. I'm guessing
that IF KZMP comes back at all, it'll be greatly reduced in signal coverage
as it would cost $1 mil plus to rebuild and all 1540 did was simulcast an
FM in recent years.

Famed engineering firm Hatfield & Dawson from Seattle was just there 2 1/2
years ago or so to tune up the array which wasnt cheap work to have done.

I had Sawa and 4QD on 1548, Lithuania on 1386, Moldova on 1413... and i
*might* have had the UAE on 1539.

EVerything but 1539 I've heard before and todays reception was noisy and
poor, I didnt even keep the recordings. Whatever 1539 WAS, reception was
even worse than the rest and no way I would've been able to identify it for
sure.

[HCDX] Alaska AM DX Audio

2021-12-01 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
It's been somewhat meager transpolar openings but what I've had, has been
good. All recorded in McGrath, Alaska 250 miles NW of Anchorage with a CC
Skywave (non SSB model), 5" DeBock tunable FSL antenna and Zoom H1 handheld
digital recorder connected directly to the output of the radio. Sorry, no
URLK shorteners this time for my audio links.. was taking topo much time to
create them and always came up with a few errors each time.

1026kHz Radio Tabriz, Azarshahr, Iran at 1819UTC on Sat Nov 27th with 2 men
talking. Not the best signal I've ever had from them, but far form the
worst and certainly understandable by a native farsi speaker. 200KW via
5377 mile transpolar path. Audio:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/17yTf120o2FOG_lprtYaeFCpKMk_5u1hI/view?usp=sharing

1053kHz Radio lasi. Lasi Romania at 1738UTC on Sun Nov 28th with woman
talking in romanian. No idea what kind of show this is. You can clearly
hear my local airport beacon, VTR 350kHz beeping away in the background.
1050khz is its 3rd harmonic and it runs a blistering 1KW from barely 2
miles away! 400kw via 4827 mile transpolar path. Audio:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OcieBA7ZiRJbFUv3MqcI63-3sD2B9sev/view?usp=sharing

1062kHz TRT Radyo 1, Diyarbakir Turkey at 1657UTC on Sat Nov 27th with a
man loudly and excitedly talking then what sounds like possibly a program
promo. Signal wasn't that great and didnt last long. I've had them much
better for much longer later in the winter, last year. 300kw via 5392 mile
transpolar path. Audio:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YAmuWPS_MWsW4hGoywkBL1vXuKpVFUgR/view?usp=sharing

1089kHz Talk Sport UK at 1742UTC on Sun. Nov 28th with man talking on the
phone with british accent. First time heard this season and not nearly as
strong as I've heard it before. 500kw via 4417 mile transpolar path.
Audio:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1az5Y30bjAwXjNXPI9R9BUim9EaQf6eWs/view?usp=sharing
(assuming 500kw Droitwich transmitter, no echo heard)

1215kHz Absolute Radio UK on Sun. Nov 28th at 1745UTC with "Mysterious
Ways" by U2 4417 or so mile transpolar path depending on which of the two
higher powered 1215 transmitters I heard. This one is rare here, 1089 Talk
Sport is my most common UK signal. 1215 audio:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1az5Y30bjAwXjNXPI9R9BUim9EaQf6eWs/view?usp=sharing

1386kHz Radio Baltic Waves International, Viesintos Lithuania at 1725UTC on
Sat Nov 27th with an absolutely glorious signal during some instrumental
music during a Radio Poland program. 75KW via 4240 mile transpolar path
Audio:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/17MxfxHb3xwzr5gxtPyMMkaf8D0JamZba/view?usp=sharing

1413kHz Vesti FM, Grigoriopol Moldova, at 1728UTC on Mon Nov 22 with man
talking in Russian by phone. Later in the recording is a female doing a
news report. Nolt a bad signal this time, but not the best I've ever heard
them because the signal can be very clear at times, almost like a semi
local. 400kw via 4820 mile transpolar path. Audio:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SKdeEivAtRPOL-qy9QkXqDSRqsWVAH1Y/view?usp=sharing

1485kHz NRK P1 Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway at 1645UTC on Wed Nov 24th.
The station playing pop music held out fairly well on and off for over 5
minutes, about the clearest I've ever heard it and the longest too. Most
times they aren't as good and only last 10-20-30 seconds. 1KW via 2675
mile transpolar path. Audio:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1moKNULk_LPfLRedW3N_jBQnpRY5MeV4A/view?usp=sharing

1530kHz Radio Romania Actualitati, Radauti Romania on Sun Nov 28th at
1803UTC. Starts off with woman talking, sounds like some kind of news
report of some kind, but just a guess based upon the inflection of the
voice and the time. Man starts talking at 29 seconds and at 39 seconds, you
hear him say the name of the station, "Radio Romania Actualitati". Two
1530kHz transmitters exist in Romania but this is the only one on the
Actualitati network, the other runs programming from their Constanta
network. 15KW non directional via 5017 miel transpolar path. Audio:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SKdeEivAtRPOL-qy9QkXqDSRqsWVAH1Y/view?usp=sharing

1548kHz Radio Sawa, Al-Kuwayt, Kuwait at 1723UTC on Mon Nov 22nd. Signal
isn't the best, but at times good enough a native speaker would easily
understand what's being said during this talk or interview show. 600kw via
5928 mile transpolar path. Audio:

[HCDX] Just HOW STURDY Are The FSL Antennas?

2021-11-29 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Gary.. sorry, but I accidentally tested the Paul Walker variant in a way
you hadnt intended, yet proved how sturdy this thing is in the process.

I was coming in from outside, and put the tote container down that had the
FSLs on top and the toe tipped backwards and one of the FSL's hit the
ground... it had been so cold outside the schedule 40 pvc pipe leg broke
off on the right side, where it's holding the tuner knob .. when the device
hit the floor.

I grabbed a zip tie and some tape, secured the leg.. and i'm back in
business. The tuner knob, the metal parts, the wiring, all still completely
intact, unharmed and working just fine!

2021-11-28 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Well, today was INTERESTING!

Had a weak but readable NRK P1 Svalbard on 1485, Iran was pretty strong and
clear in short spurts on 1449 when escaping the 1khz het from KLAM 1450
thats 350 miles away! both occurred between 1640 and 1730.

Then shortly after 1740utc, the door flew open to more.. Talk Sport 1089
and Absolute on 1215 were in fairly to pretty good in decent spurts.

I also had Moldova on 1413 decently enough but not great. Radio Sawa,
Kuwait on 1548khz showed up fairly well.

I also had what i'm nearly 100 percent positive is from Romania, but unsure
yet if its Radio romania Actualitati or Radio Constanta. It was definately
"slavic" in nature and I even heard the word Romania, but couldnt make out
much else while live listening

1548.. I think was 4QD but then swapped to Radio Sawa, Kuwait.
1953 Radio lasi, Romania playing american oldies pretty decent over my
local NDB 3rd harmonic
1179 Romania with chatter

[HCDX] Tip For Those Who DX Iran On AM

2021-11-23 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Sometimes navigating their websites ,even after you run it through google
translate can be hard and getting their contact info can be even harder

Scroll down to the bottom of the "local" IRIB AM stations website and
you'll likely see an Instagram logo click it from your phone or PC and if
youre logged in, you'll see follow, message and contact.. click the contact
button and it will display that stations email address

This might be useful to some folks, I hope.

2021-11-22 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
936, 1026, 1449 iran, 1413 Moldova, 1386 Lithuania and 1548 heard in Alaska
today. Had carriers from 864 Moldova along with 1188 and 1512 Iran and
maybe snippets of audio but nothing identifiable. Iran 1188 had some peaks
of audio but nothing intelligble really.

[HCDX] Alaska AM DX Nov 13

2021-11-13 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Spectacular signals from 4TAB 1008 and 4BH 1116 today.. not only stronger
then usual, but they each held out pretty darn steady for 4-5 minutes
each.. usually it's just 10-20-30 seconds at a time.

Had a decent signal from 2NR 738 Grafton, NSW

Had 4LO 774 for a little bit

Had Iran on 936, 1071, 1314 NEW!! and 1449.

The giveaway on 936 that its Iran and not Saudi Arabia is 936 is the
Saudi's Quran channel

[HCDX] "Odd" AM DX Behavior In Alaska Tue Nov 9

2021-11-09 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I had Kuwait on 1548 well in very short spurts early (between 1610 and
1620UTC), Iran in very well in slightly longer sup[orts between 1625 and
1730UTC. 1512 IRan was barely audible in between receptions of 1449. 1413
Moldova was audible very well in short spurts near the end of the morning
after 1720UTC

Kuwait wasnt really audible after the times noted above. 1512 Iran was
only audible that once.

Usually, if I hear something.. usually, not always it's audible on and off
most of the morning. Like once I start hearing Kuwait, it doesnt
necessarily go away till right before sunrise. 1413 being the latest isnt
odd, but it's usually audible, better earlier than this. Most of my
enhancement comes in at the same time.

There was NOTHING below 1400! I might've had a carrier from Saudi on
1260. I also think i had Saudi on 1440 but with piss poor modulation.

I had definite enhancement today but confined to the 1400 to 1560 portion
of the band and not all the the same time, which is unusual

[HCDX] Alaska AM DX Nov 7th

2021-11-07 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Things are rebounding nicely after a total wipe out last week

738, 2NR Grafton NSW was in real good for quite awhile, and they are very
very very rare here.
I had an 1161 playing what I think is classic hits and presume to be a
Filipino... it sounded english during live listening but I'll listen back
to my recording.

I also had Magic, Tauranga, NZ on 1107 fairly well. Not new by any means,
an old stalwart in fact but normally theyre only really good when theyre
playing music on the weekends. Today i had some super good speech peaks.

4BH 1116 was pretty decent, A3Z showed up a bit

[HCDX] Noticing A Trend With My Transpolar DX

2021-11-02 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Reflecting on last winter and paying attention to this winter, it seems
when the transpolar path is open for me, I have a big tunnel to the
middle-ish of the middle east (Iran and sometimes Turkey and sometimes
SAudi Arabia) and central-ish Europe. Not all countries I hear are near
water, but some are... and some of the transmitter sites I hear are near
water wether near the coast or near a big body of water.

Now, some countries and transmitter sites are quite landlocked and dry, but
I've just begun to notice this a bit later.

2021-11-01 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
No idea why this has escaped me till now when I've heard a dozen other
Hawaii AM's here 3000 miles away.

Heard this morning fairly well when not ravaged by splatter from 936 and
945 china. KKNE heard with filipino music and chat and some commercials.

[HCDX] Alaska AM DX Audio Logs

2021-10-31 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
My location: McGrath, Alaska using a C.Crane Skywave, 5” DeBock FSL
antenna, Zoom H1 digital recorder and Sony MDR7506 headphones. All were
confirmed either by a match to a web stream or known to me with 100 percent
certainty that’s what I was hearing. This isn't all, but is most of what
I’ve logged, some stuff is left out such as weaker stuff I’ve reported
already. I try to keep my logs to stuff that’s interesting for one reason
or another, a new log, exceptionally strong signal given the
circumstances.. something like that!

864kHz Trans World Radio via 1,000,000 Watt Gavar, Armenia transmitter site
on Wed Oct 27 at 1708UTC with some singing by a man and woman followed by a
brief Interval Signal interlude then the start of another program. Signal
is VERY good at times, but does fade out a bit. 5209 mile transpolar path.
Audio: http://bit.ly/Armenia864Oct27_1708utc

936kHz IRIB Radio Azarbyajan Gharbi via 300KW transmitter in Fesanduz, Iran
on Wed Oct 27 at 1640UTC with music followed by a man talking, maybe over
the phone. The signal was good enough and clear enough that Soundhound and
Shazam were able to correctly ID the song. It was getting beat up by
splatter from other stations but overall, a good signal otherwise. 5460
mile transpolar path. Audio: http://bit.ly/Iran936Oct27_16

1053kHz Radio Iași via 400KW transmitter in Iași, Romania on Wed Oct 27 at
1628UTC with some real good Romanian music, good audio quality and good
signal but my local NDB beacon in the background. You see, VTR is running a
blistering 1KW on 350kHz and 1050 is square on it’s 3rd harmonic. 4827 mile
transpolar path. Audio: http://bit.lyRomania1053Oct27_1628utc

NEW! 1179kHz IRIB Radio Iran via 50KW transmitter in Chah Bahar on Wed Oct
27 at 1557utc. This was initially an unknown as MWlist says its on 558kHz
but WRTH still has it on 1179khz. Someone also ID’d the language as Farsi
and said its much more likely to be Iran then the other 1179 in the Middle
east, KuwaitStarts with a woman talking, a music interlude then a man
talking. Near the end of the recording, you can hear it give way to a
Chinese language station. Poor to fair at times, but other times, a good
signal. 5484 mile transpolar path. Audio:
http://bit.ly/Iran1179Oct27_1557utc

NEW! 1188kHz IRIB Radio Payam via 300KW transmitter in Tehran, Iran on Wed
Oct 27 at 1559UTC with music and some talking interspersed. A few seconds
past 1600UTC top of hour, there’s a brief time tone, “Radio Payam” station
id and a few more tones. So rare for me to get a station ID from a non
English speaking station that I can so easily understand. 5460 mile
transpolar path. Audio:

http://bit.ly/Iran1188Oct27_1559utc

NEW! 1260kHz SBA Radio Riyadh via 500KW transmitter in Damman, Saudi Arabia
on Oct 27 at 1602UTC with a woman reading what sounds like a news report
and playing some sound bites followed by some music later on. Not too bad
of a signal for over 6 minutes! 6102 mile transpolar path.

Audio: http://bit.ly/SaudiArabia1260Oct27_1602utc

NEW! 1278kHz IRIB Radio Kermanshah via 200KW transmitter in Kermanshah,
Iran on Wed Oct 27 at 1624UTC with a musical interlude then a female
talking. Weak/noisy signal. 5600 mile transpolar path. Audio:
http://bit.ly/Iran1278Oct27_1624utc

NEW! 1368kHz IRIB Radio Golestan via 150KW transmitter in Gonbad-e Qabus,
Iran on Wed Oct 27 at 1623UTC with some talking, a brief musical interlude
and more talking. Noisy and poor signal. 5308 mile transpolar path. Audio:
http://bit.ly/Iran1368Oct27_1623utc

1395kHz Public Radio of Armenia via 400kw transmitter in Gavar, Armenia on
Wed Oct 27 at 1617UTC with man talking. The signal fades out a bit and
comes back with music for a bit, before yet another fade down and rise up.
On peaks, pretty good signal. 5209 mile transpolar path. Audio:
http://bit.ly/Armenia1395Oct27_1617utc

1449kHz IRIB World Service via 400kw transmitter in Bandar-e Torkman, Iran
on Sat Oct 23 at 1637UTC with female in turkmen language, with what sounded
like a news report. Slight het from 250 Watt KLAM 1450 but pretty good
signal for nearly 3 minutes. 5835 mile transpolar path. Audio:
http://bit.ly/Iran1449Oct23_1637utc

NEW! 1467kHz IRIB Radio Qom via 100KW Transmitter in Qom, Iran on Oct 27 at
1650UTC with music. Signal was brief but very good! 5460 mile transpolar
path. Audio:

http://bit.ly/Iran1467Oct27_1650utc

1512kHz IRIB Radio Ardabill via 50KW transmitter in Ardabill, Iran on Wed
Oct 27 at 1611UTC with a man talking, sounds like he’s on the phone..
There’s a musical interlude, and more talking. The signal is exceptionally
clear and strong at times especially considering the power level! I’ve yet
to log the 1 megawatt Saudi on 1512! 5320 mile transpolar path. Audio:

[HCDX] Alaska AM DX Mon Oct 25

2021-10-25 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Today was odd. Yesterday the 24th had some mild lower band enhancement.
Today was different... most certainly some very noticeable higher band
enhancement, but not from everywhere.

1548 4QD was loud and listenable for 90 minutes every time I'd tune past it
and was fairly solid for minutes at a time.

I had 1503 Gold AM NZ for a few minutes, fairly well.. all things
considered.

1350 JOER Hiroshima was in better then usual but still not too great.

The Megawatt on 1098 form China was loud as a ton of led s^ bricks.

Not much else was heard of any consequence that I cared to strain my ears
for

2021-10-24 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
This one isnt uncommon here in Alaska, but it can be hit or miss signal
strength wise. Well, I had a good signal this morning so I wanted to record
a bit.. I had to go inside to use the bathroom, I left it recording,
attended to a few things and came outside about 14 minutes later.. the
signal was still there! Listening back it did fade to oblivion a few times,
but the signal overall held out for over 14 minutes

[HCDX] Alaska AM DX Sun. Oct 24

2021-10-24 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Asians Asians Asians Asians and more Asians, including some not usually
heard here or heard well.

945 and 981 CNR1 were the usual paint peelers. Also had CNR1 on 1251 from
Harbin.

1206 Yanbian can be hit or miss but was pretty strong today. Started
recording, ran inside to use the facilities... did a bit of work, came back
14 minutes later and the signal was still there.

The lower end of the band was better then usual with a good visit from the
Norkies on 873.

I also had KBS on 864 and 558 558 is rare here as I recall, 864 isnt
too rare but not a frequent visitor/very good.

I had a 603khz playing music I wasnt able to ID yet

1287 JOHR Saporro, Japoan was fairly good, as usual, but 1440 JOWF Saporro
wasnt

It seemed above 1300khz ish the band wasnt as good but I cant say why.
Alot of the higher powered stuff is lower down. But some of the lower
powered Japanese stuff and even some of the higher powered China stuff
above 1300 wasnt that great today. If 1287 Saporro is in good, 1440 JOWF
usually is... but it wasnt today.

2021-10-22 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Some pretty good, extended time on and off with 1413 "Vesti FM" Moldova.

Had my first sighting of 1062 Turkey and it wasnt too bad.

Had Romania on 1053 and 1179. 1053 was ok in short spurts but you can
clearly hear the 3rd harmonic of my local 1kw beacon underneath.

Had Iran on 1026 and Lithuania on 1386

[HCDX] Alaska AM DX Mon. Oct. 18

2021-10-18 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Had a brief, good blip of Iran on 1449
Had a slightly longer but only "Decent" rise up of Iran on 1026.
Had my first sighting of Radio Baltive Waves on 1386
Vesti FM on 1413 Moldova made a weaker then usual showing.

1386 Lithuania and 1413 Moldova can be very strong here.

Iran is a transpolar path for me so if this stuff is showing up now, it
only means good things for the rest of winter I think

Got a new one, 711 4QW.

Had 7LO, 774 again for the second time in a week.

1413 Moldova made a pithy showing

No Iran today

I have a feeling the real dx season has kicked in for me with a few days in
the last week of transpolar reception.. it seems that stuff once it starts,
its "on"... it doesnt disappear for long...

Who in TA/DU land plays standards on 1080? This isn’t oldies or Classic
hits, this sounds like old standards.

KOAN in anchorage if it’s on air, should be in Spanish.

I’ve heard 3 songs now back to back with no ID of any kind, sailing right
through top of hour.

[HCDX] 981kHz Changchun, China

2021-10-13 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
The 200kw signal can be pretty strong here at times, it and 945 are my
strongest, most regulars from china.

The signal form 981 was so strong today i was able to widen the audio
bandwith to 3khz and hit record for awhile, which included a nice in the
clear Top hour ID, which may be helpful or useful to someone.

Recorded at 1457UTC Wednesday October 13th. Audio:

[HCDX] 2NC 1233 Newcastle Heard In Alaska

2021-10-10 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
>From Sun Oct 10th at 1604UTC

You hear a guy say "so and so, abc sport".. then the main anchor says "and
thats ABC News".. and then a few seconds of dead air followed by what
can semi clearly be heard as the weather forecast

2NC 1233 was one of the stations that interviewed a certain Alaskan radio
nerd on the air last winter

[HCDX] Alaska AM DX

2021-10-07 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
It’s been pretty lackluster this week. The Asians are there but that’s not
what I’m after this season. I’ve had some DU rumbles and gurgles and short
gasps of poor signals but nothing worth recording, logging or reporting

[HCDX] AM DX Audio From Alaska

2021-10-03 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Here's a few logs and clips from Just East Of The Ass end Of Gods Creation
Nowhere aka McGrath, Alaska using a CC Skywave and Debock 5" FSL Antenna

"Magic Talk", 1107kHz Tauranga, NZ at 1525UTC on Fri. Oct1st. Heard on and
off for 2 hours, but the absolute clearest and best signal came at 1525UTC
during Toto's Africa which is in this audio clip and gets REAL clear at
about 1 minute 5 seconds into the clip. Audio: https://bit.ly/3Fe2Bix
Distance: 7130 miles.

4TAB 1008kHz Brisbane, QLD, Aus at 1511UTC on Sat. Oct 2nd with live horse
racing action. The audio gets real good right after the start of the
recording. Audio: https://bit.ly/3iq5gvJ Distance: 6850 miles

A3Z 1017kHz Nuku'alofa, Tonga at 1531UTC on Fri October 1st with female
talking in english and Tongan at some special event live broadcast. Audio:
http://bit.ly/3A5uztk Distance: 5910 miles

4RN 792kHz Brisbane, QLD, Aus at 1519UTC on Fri Oct 1, 2021 with some
american radio show, featured american accents. Audio:
http://bit.ly/2YmE22j Distance: 6850 miles

DWNX 1611kHz Mialor, Philippines at 1412UTC on Mon Sept 27, 2021 with
bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of The Heart" and some Filipino language
commercials. Audio: http://bit.ly/2YmE22j Distance: 5110 miles

2KP 684kHz Kempsey, NSW, Aus between 1500 and 1600UTC on Sat. Oct 2nd, 2021
with several fade ups, including some Aussie accented english and a song
during. There are three 684's in Australia but all were running separate
programming at the time and I was able to match what I had to the ABC Mid
North Coast webstream, which was running "Nights with Indira Naidoo". Audio
clip #1 (with speech): https://bit.ly/3ozvHTX Audio clip #2(with music):
http://bit.ly/3BccCdO Distance: 7090 miles

CNR1 945kHz Jiaohe, China at 1400 to 1500UTC on Wed. Sept 29, 2021 with a
massively clean, clear, strong signal carrying basketball play by play in
Chinese. Signal was so good, I widened audio to 3kHz and could hear the
shoes squeaking as players went up the court! Audio clip #1: bit.ly/2Y7gbTX
Audio clip #2: 2WHfgJG Distance: "only" 3100 miles.

"Star" 657Khz New Zealand at 1400 to 1530UTC on Mon Sept 20, 2021. Heard
with several fade ups including the best one at 1412*UTC *with a song and
some english chatter. Audio: https://bit.ly/39YY4SZ Distance: "could be
7130 miles" * Not known exactly which transmitter I heard, as two exist,
Wellington and Tauranga but based upon reception behavior the fact I hear
Magic on 1107 from Tauranga regularly, I'm "going with" that transmitter
though I have heard ZB on 1035kHz from Wellington, just not very often. *

Radio Kerman 1062kHz Kerman, Iran at 1506UTC on Mon Sept 20, 2021 Heard
with a language I didnt initially recognize in the beginning and U had to
run back in to use the "Facilities" so I left it recording. Came back out
a few minutes later and the signal was gone. Upon review inside in the warm
comforts of my apartment, and thanks to a RealDX member, we heard a
reference to Iran and caught that this was Arabic language being spoken.
1062 here is usually Turkey Audio: https://bit.ly/3FoxzF0 Distance: 5750
miles
