[HCDX] Loggings from Victoria, BC

2004-09-05 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Conditions have been quite good of late after a pretty dismal
summer. Worthwhile dusting off the radios and checking the
antennae. These loggings were all from my urban/suburban home mostly using
a JRC NRD 535D. Good DX!

PERU 6020.25, 0812-, Radio Victoria Sep 4 Quite an exceptional night with
very strong signals all evening with Spanish religious talk by a male
preacher. Best I've ever heard here. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

PAPUA AND NEW GUINEA 4890, 0831-, NBC Port Moresby Sep 4 Decent late summer
conditions with usual EZL country music with a fair amount of
splatter. About an S-5 signal at 0130 local time. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

MYANMAR 5040.41, 14:06-, Radio Myanmar Sep 4 Nice clean signal with
minorities programmming with talk by YL. Surprisingly strong with
excellent modulation. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

INDIA 4970, 1414-, AIR Shillong Sep 4 Weak audio heard with Indian music,
but talk subaudible about an hour post sunrise. Quite a good opening, as
many other 60 m Indians have about the same level carriers, as well as 4902
Sri Lanka. Best audio on 4775 (AIR Imphal). (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

INDONESIA 4749.96, 1423-, RRI Makassar Sep 4 Besides Malaysia on 4895, this
is the strongest station on the band at this time. S5 to S6 signal with
modern Indonesian music. Cleaner audio than I'm used to for Indos.
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

INDONESIA 4604.97, 1425-, RRI Serui Sep 4 Fair to good signal strength with
Indonesian call-in show with lots of 'yeh, yeh' as DJ responded to
caller. More usual muddy audio, but quite decent signal. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

INDONESIA 4000.19, 1433-, RRI Kendari Sep 4 Must be call in hour in
Indonesia. Another call in show at poor level. Not parallel to 4605 (I
checked just in case). (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

INDONESIA 3976.04, 1436-, RRI Pontianak Sep 4 Great signal except for some
ham QRM, with what sounds like a children's story, with filler orchestral
music in the background (could also be the audio feed from a TV program).
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

AUSTRALIA 15390, 1448-, HCJB Australia Sep 4 American accented preacher in
English at fair level. Best using my R390A with SE-3. DXPL started at
1500, at fair level. Improving to good level by 15:12. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

ICELAND 9980, 0431-, AFRTS Sep 5 Great reception of Iceland tonight, with
Madonna's 'Like a Virgin', sung by another female artist. A repeat of
great conditions again tonight? Parallel to 7590 just as strong, but
spoiled somewhat by ute, but solved by PBT. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

PERU 6020.32, 0434-, Radio Victoria Sep 5 Incredible reception again
tonight of this Peruvian S5 to S7 signal with excellent
modulation. Latins, unlike on the east coast do not propagate well to the
Pacific north-west. Most sign off before our local sunset, and the
Grayline does not favour the west coast, so it's always a treat to hear
such a strong Latin. The exception in my experience is Brazil, which seems
to propagate much better and are more reliable on all bands than other
central and south American stations. Program 'La Voz de la Revolucion'
(excuse my Spanish, if it's incorrect) began at 04:49. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

BRAZIL 9675, 0524-, Radio Cancao Nova Sep 5 Religious preaching by a male
minister, with good reception in Portuguese. Adjacent channel RAI chirping
bird IS at 05:25 (Romanian listed at 05:30 on 9670). (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

NEW ZEALAND 3935.07, 1312-, ZLXA Sep 5 Finally heard again with poor to
fair levels with presumed National Radio relay. Western modern female
vocal. This station at one time provided regular good reception, but has
deteriorated for many years. Nice to hear again in an suburban environment
with only a modest antenna. 5 + 1 time pips and time check for ?2 o'clock
and into National news program at 14:00. Signal is at fair levels.
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

CHINA 3280, 1355-, Voice of Pujiang, Shanghai Sep 5 Fair reception with
Chinese talk and traditional Chinese instrumental music. Not listed in
ILG, but is in DBS. Parallel to 4950. Strangely, best heard on a vertical
cut for 10 meters!. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

INDONESIA 3325, 1356-, RRI Palangkaraya Sep 5 Something strange about
propagation. Again I can hear this one best with a vertical cut for 10
m! Weak Indonesian programming and EZL vocal Indo music. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

INDONESIA 3944.98, 1403-, RRI Ternate Sep 5 Call in program with usual Indo
muffled audio, but at fair level. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

KOREA (SOUTH) 3912, 1407-, Voiceof the People Sep 5 I notice that this one
is not listed in the DBS for some reason, but is in ILG. Fair signal with
female talk in Korean. Due to local QRM, not sure if it's jammed or not.
Parallel to much stronger 6600. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

INDONESIA 3976.07, 1410-, RRI Pontianak Sep 5 Great reception with news in
Bahasa Indonesia. Slight muffle as usual for Indo transmitter. Suspect
business

[HCDX] Loggings from Victoria, Canada

2004-06-13 Thread Walter Salmaniw
CANADA 9625, 0505-, CBC North Quebec Service Jun 7 Superb 5-5-5 reception
in English until TOH then into indiginous language, then sign-off
announcement in French with frequency, studio location and transmitter
locations, phone number (they accept collect calls), and off with National
Anthem until 0508, and then a single tone and into open carrier. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 7535, 0559-, WHRI Jun 10 Using WHSB's former
transmitters, now carrying WHRI programming. Sign off at 0558, then at
0600 sign to eastern Canada at 25 degrees. 'This is WHRI International,
broadcasting over WHSB Cypress Creek, South Carolina.' Excellent reception.
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

CUBA 11760, 2309-, Radio Nacional del Venezuela Jun 11 Very good reception
with ID and address in Spanish, and Venezuelan music. Many mentions of
Venezuela. Full ID at 2311, and mentions of Simon Bolivar. 'Republica
Bolivaria Venezuela'. // to 9820 but not in sync. Wonder why?. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

PAPUA AND NEW GUINEA 4960, 1231-, Catholic Radio Network (CRN) Jun 12 I
wonder whether CRN has made antenna adjustments to minimize radiation
beyond PNG, or are they off again? Last weekend reception was at times
almost good here in Victoria, but since then it has been virtually
non-existant, whereas 4890 continues at a good level. I'm glad I've heard
them when I did! I'm sceptical that it's just poor propagation. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

AUSTRALIA 15435, 1234-, HCJB Australia Jun 12 Poor reception of DXPL. At
the same time direct from Quito on 12005 is excellent, though not exactly
in parallel. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

VIETNAM 9550, 1251-, Voice of Vietnam Jun 12 Very strong reception of VOV's
Russian service with talk of Russian-Vietnamese relations. Way over Cuba,
and no sign of Bangladesh at this time. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

BANGLADESH 7185.0, 1252-, Bangladesh Betar Jun 12 English programming at
good level with decent modulation today. This station is often heard with
poor modulation. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

USA 7505, 1309-, KTBN Jun 12 5-5-5 reception of KTBN with TV feed, so still
on the air, at least for now. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

ICELAND 13855, 1316-, AFRTS Jun 12 Fair reception with discussion of
putting Ronald Reagan on the $20 bill. // to Pearl Harbor on 6350U and
Guam on 5765U (both at good to very good levels). (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

UZBEKISTAN 15295, 1330-, Radio Tashkent Jun 12 Best frequency with IS and
into English programming. Only at poor level, and // to 17775. Unable to
hear other listed //. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

MEXICO 4810, 0301-, XERTA Jun 13 Presumed on this frequency. A very
difficult catch due to the very noisy ute on both USB and LSB. Lots of
Spanish talking and piano music in between. The only way I could monitor
is to use a Timewave 599zx with a narrowed bandwidth. The signal would be
quite good if not for the unwanted utility noise (no CODAR, but a very loud
buzz on both USB/LSB heard widely, it seems). (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

PHILIPPINES 11795, 1544-, Radio Blagovest Jun 13 Excellent reception in
Russian, with Protestant type programming in Russian, with organ music
(foreign to the Russian church), then ID 'Vy sluyshayte Radio Blagovest',
followed by Moscow address, and finally 'Radio Blag'. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

CHINA 17719.98, 1556-, Radio Canada International Jun 13 RCI in English to
India with sign-off announcements, including parallel of 15455 and then
immediately off. Good level. I wasn't quick enough to check the //.
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

PAKISTAN 15100, 1602-, Radio Pakistan Jun 13 English news at fair+ level on
exact frequency. End of the news and transmission at 1615. I did not hear
any // today. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

FINLAND 15400, 1632-, Radio Finland Jun 13 Rarely reported anymore. Very
strong reception in Finnish with what I assume is a sermon with slight
reverb/hollow sound like in a large church/cathedral. Too bad no English
:( At 1644:30 went into organ music and choir. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

[HCDX] CRN reception this AM on 4960

2004-06-06 Thread Walter Salmaniw
PAPUA AND NEW GUINEA 4960, 1000-, Catholic Radio Network Jun 6 From 0955
tune-in. Much stronger signal with talk mostly by YL. Vatican Radio IS at
1000. Interview with male subsequently (?Marcel) in English. Although
stronger, more atmospheric noise. Best heard with my K9AY. No sign so far
of LA station. As yesterday, signal improved. By 10:10 fairly easy to
follow English news broadcast (ie stories from Geneva, etc). Same female
announcer, whom I'm finding a bit hard to follow compared to the
male. Vatican IS once, again at 03:14:12. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

[HCDX] Loggings from Victoria, BC

2004-06-06 Thread Walter Salmaniw
This week, the emphasis was on new Catholic Radio Network from Vanimo,
PNG. Best reception this morning by far. Good DX and please spend a
moment remembering the vets on this 60th anniversary of D-Day.

COSTA RICA 13750.7, 0102-, World University Network Jun 2 Cahuita, Costa
Rica on at fair level with ramblings of Dr. Gene Scott. Parallels noted
include: 6090 (Anguilla) good, 9724.96 (Cahuita) good, but over cochannel
?Golos Rossii, 13845 (WWCR) excellent. When rechecked at 0455, 9724.95 is
very strong, 13750 is off, 5029.1 fair and 6149.92 fair (both also Costa
Rica), 6090 excellent, 7375 is off the air, and 5935 (WWCR) excellent, 5755
(KAIJ) excellent. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

BRAZIL 11925.20, 0110-, Radio Bandeirantes Jun 2 Poor to fair reception
with Portuguese talk, parallel to 31m on 9645.04 which is at fair to good
level. Lots of static crashes. Mentions of Sao Paulo. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

GUAM 13362.0, 0518-, AFRTS Jun 2 Fair to good reception of AFRTS on exactly
13362 and not on split frequency 500 Hz higher. Time line today, then
business news. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

?URUGUAY 9620.9, 0504-, SODRE Jun 4 Tantalizing het heard on this
frequency, but spoiled by CBC Northern Quebec service on 9625, but they are
signing off as we speak. Should make SODRE a possibility after this time.
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

PAPUA AND NEW GUINEA 4960, 1013-, Catholic Radio Network (CRN) Jun 5 Heard
with continuous talk from tune-in at 0955 at poor to fair level. No
definite ID at TOH, but did hear Vatican Radio IS at 10:05 over cochannel
with modern pop music station (Radio Federacion? Vanuatu? Radio Cima,
DR?). Audio clip of George Bush 'United States Army' at 10:07:45. Signal
definitely improving. At 1019, the Latin suddenly faded up dominating the
channel. CRN either dropped out completely, or faded way down. Catchy
Spanish dance tune at fair to good level. It's grayline to Santa Domingo,
and shortly for Sucua, Ecuador. I'm assuming the LA will dominate the
frequency for the next half hour or so, and then fade, leaving CRN in the
clear. Channel spoiled by ute, mostly on USB from about 1045. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

PAPUA AND NEW GUINEA 4960, 1000-, Catholic Radio Network Jun 6 From 0955
tune-in. Much stronger signal with talk mostly by YL. Vatican Radio IS at
1000. Interview with male subsequently (?Marcel) in English. Although
stronger, more atmospheric noise. Best heard with my K9AY. No sign so far
of LA station. As yesterday, signal improved. By 10:10 fairly easy to
follow English news broadcast (ie stories from Geneva, etc). Same female
announcer, whom I'm finding a bit hard to follow compared to the
male. Vatican IS once, again at 03:14:12. 60th anniversary of Normandy
invasion at 10:20. National Network on 4890 measures S9 at my QTH compared
to S3 to S5 for CRN. Vatican IS again at 10:33:30 followed by Gregorian
type chant followed by definite ID by YL as 'This is the Catholic Radio
Network broadcasting from ?'. First time I've heard a positive ID!.

[HCDX] Loggings from Victoria, BC

2004-05-30 Thread Walter Salmaniw
LIBERIA 4760, 0557-, ELWA May 26 Continuous IS from 0557 tune in, until TOH
at fair level, but unable to make anything out at 0600. Still interesting
to hear their IS after a long time. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

MEXICO 9705.98, 0343-, Radio Mexico International May 30 Good reception
tonight with Mexican traditional vocals. Best on LSB to avoid splatter
from WYFR way up on 9715. A shame that they canned their English programs,
including DXperience heard around now local Saturday nights. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 5919.97, 0348-, WBOH May 30 Good reception with
inspirational Christian hymns. As always slightly off nominal 5920. Fair
amount of static crashes tonight. FBN ID at 0400 including for WTJC 9370
and WBOH 5920, into USA network news. 9370 in parallel and stronger.
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

AUSTRALIA 5995, 1418-, Radio Australia May 30 Excellent reception with
English programming about engineering. For example, it takes a tonne of
water to make one computer chip! Parallels noted are: 9590 (very good over
a weak cochannel), 6080 and 7240 both excellent. These are all via
Shepparton. Finally 9805 via Darwin (good with minimal adj splatter CRI on
9810). 9475 (excellent) and 11660 (good) sign-on at 1430. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

SINGAPORE 6150, 1431-, Radio Singapore May 30 English news at fair level
with international news. Local and regional news. Australian accented
woman announcer. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

AUSTRALIA 7180, 1438-, Voice International May 30 Indonesian programming at
fair to good level. Indo. has to be the easiest language to
recognize! Very unique. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

RUSSIA 7390, 1444-, Voice of Russia World Service May 30 Excellent
reception in English via Vladivostok with description of Russian toy
crafts. Parallel to 12055 at fair to good level via Chita. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

TAIWAN 9280, 1450-, WYFR May 30 WYFR with their own version of special
English, with a bible story. Not quite as polished as VOA's version. Very
good reception. Mandarin programming otherwise. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

CUBA 13750, 1459-, Radio Nacional Venezuela May 30 Relay of Venezuela via
Cuba at very good level, with telephone feed audio in Spanish. Parallel to
11875 (fair). (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

[HCDX] WMR audible now on 15810

2004-05-21 Thread Walter Salmaniw
I can hear weak audio, with a good carrier level right now (0418 22
May). Better than the snippets audible a few days back at the same
time. Anyone else in western North America hearing them?...Walt

[HCDX] Loggings from Victoria, BC

2004-05-16 Thread Walter Salmaniw
TUNESIA 9720, 0409-, Tunesian Radio and Television May 9 Good reception of
an Arabic language program with western EZL instrumental music, with a lot
of adjacent splatter, but strong signal. Parallel to equally strong 7275,
and weaker 7190. Just as I'm typing this they have reverted to Arabic
music. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

USA 7384.98, 0426-, Radio Netherlands May 9 I didn't know that RN is
relayed via WRMI, with an English program about Estonian music, followed by
an ID. Then into Amsterdam Forum from Toronto. Good, but not nearly as
clean as the signal from Bonaire. Checked their website, and it's a relay
of WRN. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

ALBANIA 7354.90, 0225-, TWR May 12 Tentative logging for this station, as
they were typically off frequency in the past. Too weak to identify the
language with certainty. Talk by male until 0227, then music, then talk by
YL. Lots of atmospheric noise tonight. I was wondering about WRNO, when
the TWR IS sounded at 0230. Frankly, I was hoping that WRNO was back!.
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

NORTH KOREA 9335.16, 1528-, Voice of Korea May 16 Mind numbing programming
in English with somewhat distorted audio. Program about the 'Role of
Ideological Conciousness in Socialist Society'. Exciting programming, let
me tell you. This followed the 59th installment of the readings of the
great leader, or some such topic. Frequent IDs. Parallel to 11710 (also
good). 9325.02 was on at same time, but in Russian at good level as well.
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

CHINA 9785, 1535-, China Radio International May 16 Excellent reception of
English programming to WCNA about events in Beijing, including Riverdance
from Ireland, with the Irish cultural official mentioning the similarities
between Ireland and China (?!). Then an ad for CRI on line, at
www.crienglish.com. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

CHINA 17720, 1546-, Radio Canada International May 16 Spotlight program in
English at fair level from Xian, China. No useable parallels heard.
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

PAKISTAN 15724.64, 1600-, Radio Pakistan May 16 Interval signal for several
minute before TOH, followed by English ID and news. Initially very
difficult to understand, but slowly improving. Fair at best, and parallel
to 15100. End of news at 1509 with headlines. Followed by news
commentary. 15100 is stronger and much easier to follow. 11570 barely
audible here. Off when rechecked at 1616. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

[HCDX] ? PNG 4960 heard this morning!

2004-04-23 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Folks, I recorded 4960 from 1015 for an hour (while I slept), and I've just
reviewed the tape. Now this is tentative, but at approximately 10:45 UTC
today 21/April 2004, there began a vocal national anthem, which I'm quite
certain is identical to several websites of National Anthems. This was
followed by a male talking, but too weak for me to be sure of language,
etc. Sounded like a prayer in all likelihood. I was using a R5000 with a
T2FD. Not ideal, but I wasn't up at the time to fire up my HF-2050 and
select the best antenna. Signal strength was just a little weaker than
Port Moresby usually is on 4890. As I listen, the language is not
English. This lasted for about 5 minutes, than some modern music. Seems
to be recorded outside at a live event? Can anyone verify the above? Are
there any Latins signing on at that time?.Walt.

[HCDX] Final SRI English broadcast

2004-04-13 Thread Walter Salmaniw
SWITZERLAND 9885, 2326-, Swiss Radio International Apr 12 Tuned in to hear
the final SRI English broadcast on SW. Instead at precisely 2330, there
came an announcement stating that this was an end of an era, and the hope
that the listener will continue with swissinfo.org. Fair on 9885 (direct)
and very good on French Guiana relay on 11905. Otherwise continuous music
only. A disappointing end! 11905 left the air at precisely , but 9885
continued. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

Fellas, I'll be visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima between 10 and
26 March accompanying a school trip. I would be happy to meet fellow DXers
while there. I had a nice time a couple of years ago and met with two
colleagues in Tokyo. Drop me a personal email, and I'll provide you with
exact details. Thanks!

[HCDX] Loggings from this evening 2 March Victoria, BC

2004-03-01 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Every night is different. Reception tonight of Zimbabwe is pretty much
non-existent, but there is an opening to the Indian
subcontinent. Wonderful reception from Brazil on 25 meters. WSHB is
goneanother SW broadcaster bites the dust. Sad!

USA 7535, 0700-0800, WSHB Cypress Creek Mar 1 This is the last program I
stayed up to monitor, waiting for a final goodbye. Alas, there was
none...only the same canned announcement at the end of the program
announcing the discontinuation of SW, after the Christian Science
broadcast. I'm not sure if there were any further broadcasts after this
time. WSHB is definitely gone as I type this at 01:30 2 March. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

PAKISTAN 5027.25, 0142-, Radio Pakistan Mar 2 TBL lists this one as Radio
Pakistan, Quetta with Regional Service from 0045 in Urdu/E. The Indian
type chanting by a male, but more of a Muslim influence fits perfectly. No
parallels noted. Talk is not in English. Lots of Rebelde splatter, but
the signal is otherwise in the clear. Weak. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

INDIA 9470, 0151-, AIR Mar 2 Excellent reception with lovely Hindi
music. Listed as Hindi-English service. Parallel 9425 is fair. Hindi
talk by YL at 0154, then haunting Indian music. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

ICELAND 13855, 0155-, AFRTS Mar 2 AFN programming at fair level with
news. In the clear, with some deeper fades. No parallels noted, as all
other AFRTS stations monitored were carrying a ball game. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

BRAZIL 11780, 0213-, Radio Nacional da Amazonia Mar 2 Superb reception
5-5-5, S9 + 10 to 20 signal totally in the clear with multiple full
ID's. All in Portuguese of course. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

[HCDX] Loggings from Victoria, B.C. 29 Feb

2004-02-29 Thread Walter Salmaniw
USA 7535, 0245-, WSHB Cypress Creek Feb 29 Christian Science religious
programming in English. Sign off annoucements mentioning them leaving the
air as of 1 March, and that some will be available on the web. Thanked
listeners for the last 15 years. Dead air, then transmitter briefly off,
and then IS and into Russian programming. Excellent reception. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

SOUTH AFRICA 3255, 0314-, BBCWS Feb 29 Fair reception of BBCWS in Engllish
(// to 5975). Just overhauled my antennae, so hoping for some good
reception. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

ZIMBABWE 3306, 0321-, Radio Zimbabwe Feb 29 Presumed logging, with snippets
of audio. Music mostly. Too weak to identify any speech. I can hear a
het (weaker) on 4828 as well. Hopefully be able to hear at a better level
one evening. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

PUERTO RICO 7507, 0442-, AFRTS Feb 29 Fair to good reception with AFN
programming, with pulsatile ute splatter spoiling an otherwise reasonable
signal. Funny choice of frequency, with adjacent SW
broadcasters. Parallel to Key West on 5446.5 (also with coch ute).
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

RUSSIA 5940, 0507-, Radio Rossii Feb 29 Fair reception with Russian
programming. Ad at 0508 ('Reklama Radio Rossii'), then into
weather. Parallel to slightly stronger 7320. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

USA 6925, 0514-, Take it Easy Radio Feb 29 Monologue by southern accented
OM, giving email address. Laid back monologue. Mentioning other pirates
he enjoys. Hello to Andrew Yoder, Mr. Radio. Also mentions FRN, MT, and
Pop Comm. Email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sign-off
announcement at 0518. Solid S7 signal. Did not sign-off, however. Into
music and public service announcements for Al Frampton (?) running for
president. TEAR ID at 0539. Sight fade at this time. Another ID at 0549
with Al's platform (marijuana to ease the pain, abolish the FCC, all pirate
stations will have a frequency). 'Free Radio for America'. Rechecked at
07:15 and still going strong with Bob Hope show. Weaker now. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

CHINA 4800, 1558-, CNR 1 Feb 29 Fair signal, spoiled by CODAR with Chinese
music. Parallels 4460 good, 5030 good to very good, and 7935 poor. All 1
+ hours after local sunrise. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

PAKISTAN 9395.0, 1604-, Radio Pakistan Feb 29 On exact frequency, with
English news. Poor only. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

YEMEN (NON) 9870.0, 1612-, Radio Saana Feb 29 Very good reception of this
frequency with continuous western music. ILG or HFCC has only Yemen on at
this time. I'm a bit sceptical.. No go. This is the Chinese with their
classical music. Heard Chinese at 1624. Darn!. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

USA 11715, 1628-, KJES Feb 29 Infrequently reported, but still here with
excellent reception. Spanish religious programming, guitar vocal. Este es
KJESID at 1630 by child in Spanish. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

UNITED KINGDOM 11935, 1632-, Radio Canada International Feb 29 Good signal,
but spoiled a bit by long/short path echo with RCI's Ukrainian program
(soon to be decimated in favour of a Portuguese to Brazil program).
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

USA 17765, 1634-, WSHB Feb 29 Presumed last day of transmission with
Portuguese programming to East Africa. Excellent signal with only some
splatter from WYFR on 17760. Same excellent reception with French to
Central Africa on 17505 at 17:11. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

CANADA 6030, 1639-, CFVP Feb 29 Strong signal (!!) with infomercial for
'Your Health Matters'. Various health supplements, etc. Way over another
cochannel. Pushing 'Beta Prostate' over Viagra. 1 capsule equals to 2000
doses of Saw Palmetto, etc etc. Only available from the 1-800
numberFiller music from 0858. Occasional fades with presumed Cuban
jamming. ID for CKMX at 1700, into another paid program. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

USA 9370, 1706-, WTJC Feb 29 Star Spangled Banner into vocal hymn. Very
poor. Power must be minimal?. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

Good night last night for India and Sri Lanka:

INDIA 9595, 0131-, All India Radio Dec 14 Very strong programming from
listed AIR in Urdu with 125 kw via Delhi (according to ILG). Lovely Indian
music. Slightly overmodulated talk by OM. Parallel 11620 same modulation
but at fair level. (Walter Salmaniw, Victoria, B.C.)

INDIA 10330, 0137-, All India Radio Dec 14 Excellent reception tonight to
India with Hindi service and listed 50 kw. Wonderful Hindi music, and
interspersed by what sounds like ads. (Walter Salmaniw, Victoria, B.C.)

INDIA 9425, 0144-, All India Radio Dec 14 Growling transmitter, but
otherwise a very strong signal with Hindi music. ILG lists as a National
Channel in Hindi/English. Parallel to slightly weaker 9470, but without
the growl. (Walter Salmaniw, Victoria, B.C.)

SRI LANKA 15200, 0149-, Deutsche Welle Dec 14 A great south Asian
evening. DW via Trincomalee in Russian at very good strength. Other SL

(fair), 15210 VOA Bengali (very good), 15250 VOA English (fair to good),
15690 VOA Dari (fair), 11905 SLBC Hindi (poor), 9770 SLBC English (poor).
11880 NHK in English, suffering from a het (poor). Others at lower levels.

RE: [HCDX] Question about Minidisc recorders

2003-12-08 Thread Walter Salmaniw
At 02:49 PM 12/7/2003, you wrote:
Hello Max,

I remember years ago hearing similar noise to what you described on another
DXer's MZ-R3 (R2?) Sony recorder. This is quite an ancient minidisc
recorder; I had presumed that these problems were gone from the newer
recorders. (Evidently not!)
I do a lot of recording with the MD (mostly all Sony's). I have heard the
same once or twice in the past. Seems to me that the noise came from the
LCD display, and then only if it was immediately adjacent the
receiver/antenna. A few cm away, and the problem disappeared. I use a 1m
patch chord, and have never suffered any interference that way.

[HCDX] Loggings from Victoria, BC

2003-12-06 Thread Walter Salmaniw

It's nice to get back to a bit of DXing. Here's several loggings from this
morning:
GERMANY 9555, 1543-, Russian International Radio Dec 6 Very good reception
with ID at 1544, then into popular Russian vocals, then a piece about
Soviet propaganda. Very modern sounding. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)
NEW ZEALAND 6095, 1555-, RNZI Dec 6 Very good reception of RNZI, with
program entitled 'At the Movies', until 1558. Into pop music. 6 time
pips, ID for Radio New Zealand, and into news about Zimbabwe and
Commonwealth conference. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)
ETHIOPIA 9560.71, 1618-, Radio Ethiopia Dec 6 English language programming
at poor levels. Address heard at 1619, then into a modern song, not sure
if in English. Parallel to 7165.40, also suffering from a lot of
splatter. Using John Bryant's audio switching unit very helpful
here! Nothing on 11800. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)
GERMANY 9860, 1630-, Bible Voice Dec 6 English programming with letters
from believers around the world, and into a prayer. Good reception. ID
for People's Gospel Hour at 1634. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)
CONGO 9610, 1644-, Radio Congo Dec 6 French language program at just above
threshold levels. Variety program. Music at 1652, then talk by YL,
interspersed with background music. Parisian sounding French, without any
African accent. Signal improving over time. Quite good at 1656, with
lively music. Talk at 1659, with mentions of Nationale. A presumed
logging, but fairly certain. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

[HCDX] Loggings from Victoria, BC

2003-12-03 Thread Walter Salmaniw
I've been away from the receiver for a few months. Don't think I've missed
much, though. Here are a few loggings from tonight. Reception was rather
good for a change:

IRAN 9580, 0103-, VOIRI Dec 4 Finally some decent reception noted. VOIRI
with ID by YL at 0105 in English. Initially tuned in at about 00:45 with
SIO of 4-5-4. Unfortunately, CRI via Havana which was cochannel after
0100, initially at low level, completely overwhelmed Tehran by 0110. Also
in English, with it's own CRI ID in English at 01:13. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

USA 5105.22, 0330-, WBCQ Dec 4 Strange Christian programming, the
'Apocolapse Chronicles' in USB mode, off nominal 5105. Strong
signal. Parallel to stronger 9329.63 LSB, but not to 7415. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

USA 5919.98, 0332-, WBOH Dec 4 Presumed WBOH here with lively preacher,
with a ?Lusaka, Georgia address given at 0344. I note that ILG lists 5770
for them. Fair to good reception, but best on LSB. USB seems to suffer
from some noise. LSB nicely in the clear. I didn't wait around for an ID.

Guy, many thanks for the 90 minutes of enjoyment! I listened away while
doing some of my Sunday chores. Yes, there's something very quaint about
these south seas broadcasts. I find that RNZI to some extent, has many of
the same properties, and hence perhaps why I enjoy them so much. I agree
that there are many parallels with SIBC and some of the PNG stations, and
even Radio Vanuatu. Many a morning at Grayland, when reception of Port
Moresby is a solid 5-5-5, I've just dozed off enjoying the local
programming from the south Pacific. ..Walt.

73s,

Hi, Patrick! I own two units and absolutely love them for cleaning up the
random noises and whistles that are so prevalent. I too found them a bit
pricey, so I purchased both units used (with the latest firmware)--one on
eBay, and the other via a friend. Wouldn't do without them!!! There's
usually at least one on eBay at any given time, and go for between $250 and
$300 or so. Other guys (like Guy Atkins) prefer the NIR 12 unit (I think
I have the model correct), though my observation seems to indicate that the
majority of users prefer the Timewave.

[HCDX] Grayland, WA loggings 3 - 5 October, 2003

2003-10-07 Thread Walter Salmaniw
All Loggings from Grayland, WA (3 5 October, 2003).

A mixture of LW/MW and SW loggings. My own personal highlight is the new
aboriginal Australian near Darwin. A most difficult catch. Enjoy!

PERU 6020.28, 0408-, Radio Victoria Oct 3 Gradually building strength
throughout the evening with Spanish talk, and lots of adjacent
spatter. Best using LSB. SIO 3-3-3. Nice ID at 0458, and again a full ID
at 0500. Into NA at 0501. Then went into a short Spanish choral hymn, and
then into a Spanish homily by the Pope. SIO after 0500 upto 4-4-4. Still
there at 0525n tune-out. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

COLOMBIA 6010.179, 0538-, Voz de tu Conciencia Oct 3 Very strong signal
with contemporary Spanish Christian vocals. ID at 0545 and Spanish
religious talk by male. SIO 4-4-4, but need to use USB to avoid het from
6010. No ID at TOH. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

ALASKA 930, 0616-, KTKN Oct 3 Dominant on this frequency with EZL music, by
Eagles, etc. Very good. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

AUSTRALIA 5049.94, 0913-, ARDS (Aboriginal Resource Development Service)
Oct 3 I'm certain this is what I'm hearing from after 0900 tune-in. Very
low level with talk in what sounds to me like Australian accented
vernacular language, with short musical piece at 0515, and then same male
speaker. Too weak so far to positively identify, but absolutely not the
Chinese station (China is still in daylight this time of year). Also
they're not sked until 1000.I'm hearing best on NW oriented
Beverage. USB avoids a pulsed tone heard on the edge of LSB (presumably
ocean wave research Radar). Signal gradually improving over the
hour. Spoiled at 0945 by oriental fishermen, and Chinese sign-on at 1000.
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

SOLOMON ISLANDS 5019.88, 1023-, SIBC Oct 3 Local news in Pidgin English
about economic aid from Australia and Japan. English segments as
well. Into English religious segment at 1033 by Australian accented
minister. Very good as usual. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

KOREA (DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF) 3559.89, 1034-, Voice of Korea Oct 3 Usual
cold war propaganda in English about the revolutionary workers party of
Korea, etc. Good reception. Parallels noted: 9335.14 (very good),
11710.02 (good to very good), 11735.16 (good) and 13650.06 (very
poor). Listeners who can stand listening for the whole transmission
should be awarded a medal!. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

AUSTRALIA 11750, 1051-, HCJB Australia Oct 3 Good reception of English
religious program about Romanian ministers under communism. (Salmaniw,
Victoria, BC)

TIBET 9490, 1113-, Tibet PBS Oct 3 Holy Tibet program presented by the same
YL I've heard in previous years in English at fair level, but use LSB to
avoid splatter. Parallels are: 4905 (good level), 4920 (poor under
cochannel), 5240 (poor), 6200 (fair), and 7385 (poor). Still going at
0720, so sign-off of English program varies from 15 to 30 minutes.
(Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

VIETNAM 6378.81, 1141-, Radio Lai Chau Oct 3 Presumed logging of this
station at fair to good strength except for static crashes with gentle
Vietnamese sounding vocals. Have to use LSB to escape utility noise. Talk
by YL at 1159:35. Then OM at TOH with possible ID, once only (sounded
official anyway), and into Vietnamese music. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

VIETNAM 5035.05, 1206-, Dai Tieng Noi Vietnam Oct 3 H'mong service with
distinctive music, and talk by YL. Music is fairly strong, but talk much
weaker modulation. Best using USB, but suffers from some splatter from
'space zapper' pulses. Parallel to weaker 6165. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

KOREA (REPUBLIC OF) 1566, 1259-, HLAZ Oct 3 FEBC with S9 + 5 signal in
Japanese. Very much like a local!. (Salmaniw, Victoria, BC)

PNG 3335, 1323-, Radio East Sepik Oct 3 Huge signal from Wewak, on much

I am amazed that it has not been used against Radio Free Cascadia + Chiapas

Yes, Thailand is not geographically antipodal of USA but they match a
Sunset/Sunrise Gray Line and this explains the good propagation noticed
by Thomas.
I think that both Glenn and Marcello are correct. I've been fascinated in
antipodal dxing for some time, and in my experience, it does have to be
very close to the actual antipode to work. Two examples come to mind. I
heard Radio Liberty/Free Europe via Portugal/Spain while travelling in New
Zealand in 1984, using a tiny Sony analog portable and just it's
whip. 5-5-5 signal, and no sign of the terrible Soviet jamming of those
years. Secondly, in Hawaii, one can hear Zambia similarly many hours after
sunrise, using just the whip at very strong levels on 60 and 49
meters. You guessed it, the antipode is Zambia. Now, the same reception
is not possible with other south African, or east African stations. They
come in about the same level as here in the Pacific North West. This is
true at different times of the year as well (between November and April at
least)..Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, Canada.

Thomas, have a look at this antipodal projection. Now perhaps western
Australia on 160 m would propagate well, but from experience, dawn
enhancement to that part of the world (Grayline propagation) does wonders
from the west coast on medium wave to the tropical bands. (I speak from
many sessions out at Grayland, WA and Sombrio Beach, BC). Take a look
where Thailand is, though. This is no where near the antipode, and I would
state again that this simply is not antipodal propagation. Again, Thailand
provides excellent grayline opportunities at certain times of the year
(we've heard VOA from Thailand on MW at very strong levels at Grayland, WA
using Beverages. If it was antipodal propagation, all of the Beverages
would be expected to perform equally well (ours are West, South-West, and
North-West oriented), as at the time of monitoring, there is a darkness
path in the directions of all of the Beverages. This is not the
case. Typically, one Beverage always outperforms the others, and it's not
always the one you might expect (probably due to ionospheric
ducting/refraction).

http://jidanni.org/geo/antipodes/images/world.png

Another projection which I have found very useful and interesting is found
here:

http://www.wendycarlos.com/maps/nadirs.jpg

Notice Hawaii is smack dab in Zambia, while New Zealand extends across
Portugal and Spain. It looks like the antipode of Thailand is in fact off
the west coast of South America. I've printed this map off and use it in
my DX binder. Most of North America is not very useful when it comes to
the antipode, lying in the Indian Ocean towards Antarctica.

sounding. Signal would be nice except for the static. Best by far on my
T2FD antenna. Very clean audio. 0144: Checked again at 0133 with soccer
play by play and mentions of Argentina. I became suspicious. Sure enough
an email came shortly afterwards from Radio Cochiguaz confirming that the
frequency is occupied by the Argentinian feeder. Sorry for the
mixup. Reception was 4-3-4 at 0147.(Salmaniw, Victoria BC)
