USB 2? That's what, only 60MB/s bandwith right? Is that enough to push HD

I know MPEG-2 can be upwards of 8mb/sec, not sure about MPEG-4.

Don't believe the anti-iPod FUD. Only songs that you download from
iTunes Music Store are locked to the iPod/iTunes. That is no
different than almost every other music store. I have owned 4
different iPods dating back to the original and there is still nothing
that beats it. And if you don't like iTunes there are plenty of
freeware/shareware apps that you can use to sync and upload music to
it.

RE: [H] MP3 players...

2006-11-13 Thread Mesdaq, Ali
I personally use the iPod nano right now but its just ok and I got it as
a gift. But I am going to be buying a solution shortly as well and I
totally leaning towards this:

http://shop.sirius.com/edealinv/servlet/ExecMacro?nurl=control/StoreItem
.vm&ctl_nbr=2640&siId=1745656&catParentID=7874&scId=7874&oldParentID=787

Its portable, has mp3 capability, and with the license you also get the
streaming internet feed. Its perfect for me because it has NFL network
on it and the trance music station is the best I have heard anywhere. I
find that MP3 players alone get old because if you listen to the same
songs over and over what's the fun of that? Then if you keep updating
your music that's annoying as well. So this seems to be the best of both
worlds. Store your favorite songs, listen to new music you like, save
the songs you just listened to that you like, and not worry to much
about managing it.

But of course I haven't used it so I don't know if its as promised. I
would love to hear if anyone on the list has one of these.

I think I will probably stay away from the Ipod.

Currently, this is what I am interested in:

I downloaded the PC Beginner CD ISO file and burned the bootable CD. I hope

specifically for working with other hard drives etc. I can easily work with
up to 6 hard drives attached, 4 IDE and 2 SATA. I want to be confident I can
unlock data using my shop computer and copy it to a folder on another hard
drive. I should not have to worry about anything in a customer's computer
but its hard drive. I should feel confident to copy all of a customer's My

Possibly OTT for what you are looking for, but I really like the Archos
devices. I have an AV500-100gig. It was the only thing out there at the time
that I could get all my music onto and have room for it to grow (950 albums

Might I ask why the iPod is out of contention?

I purchased an iPod for my daughter for graduation last summer and had the
opportunity to use it several times and I loved it. I finally saw what all
the hype was about. It seemed intuitive and easy to use. Holds our entire CD
collection (I'm fortunate because my 18 year old daughter is an "oldies"
fan) on the 30 GB version with space to spare. Runs for an extended period.
I found no downsides, but of course, that's JMHO and YMMV.

I'm hoping to get hers when she decides to upgrade :)

I really like the zen.

I spent today playing with a Zune. Ignore that POS. What garbage. I can't
believe MS thinks this is an Ipod killer. My wife has an Ipod and loves
it, I don't have anything negative about it. I guess it all depends on what
you're after. I have one of the Zen Nanos, because 2GB was more then enough
for what I was after.

[H] MP3 players...

2006-11-13 Thread Bobby Heid
Hey,

I am looking to get myself an MP3 player for Christmas and was wondering
what you all are using and the likes/dislikes of the model that you have.

I think I will probably stay away from the Ipod.

Currently, this is what I am interested in:

http://tinyurl.com/yngznv

http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Zen-Vision-Video-Player/dp/B000CS7U1C/sr=8-1/
qid=1163443585/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-6203142-7296031?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

Maybe even the 60GB version.

Thanks for any inputs,
Bobby

No problem! Looks like you have a couple of choices! There are tons of stores
online that sell them too. Looks like most around that price point are
15mph/30-40minutes.

Re: [H] Multi-disc HD Enclosures

2006-11-13 Thread Anthony Q. Martin
I would not stripe them. However, I would like to either span (JBODs) them
or use them as separate drives. if you span them, you lose all the data if
you lose one drive? Maybe I don't understand the technology.

Basically, I want to use this thing for these purposes:

..back up of multiple PCs
..back up of MP3s and Audible.com downloads (I'll still have other HDs in
enclosures that will keep the MP3s)
...storage of ripped movies, which I consider nonessential stuff, as I rip
from my DVDs and move to my UMPC when I'm traveling...once I've watched it,
I'm done with the file.

After ripping over 200 CDs, the thought of redoing that work blows my head
open (and I've done it once).

So, I don't need speed, but I have a bunch of dissimilar capacity HDs that
are going unused and buying an enclosure for each is not a good solution.

[H] Multi-disc HD Enclosures

2006-11-13 Thread Anthony Q. Martin
I have so many HDs around now that it's getting expensive (and wasteful of
space) to keep buying enclosures for each one. I'm thinking a four or five
disk bay would be best now. Anyone have a recommendation to make on
brands/models? Thanks.

LOL, yep! Actually, she did not ask for one. But just watching her watch
the other kids riding theirs, waiting for them to run down...

I actually thought about the exercise part. From what I have been looking

2006-11-13 Thread Brian Weeden

Hehestill debating that. I love HD but haven't made the leap to
HD-DVD/Bluray yet mainly on terms of principle. But I am guessing
that sometime in the next 18 months I will and then it will be
something to think about.

10-15 GB, is that the MPEG-4 file size? Ouch.

Many RAID controllers do not support this.

Also, what are you going to do once you get caught by the high-def bug? 10-15GB
per film... ;)

So is my plan of upgrading the drives one at a time to a larger
capacity and then upping the RAID size sound? I really don't want to
lose my data that I can't backup.

Of course, my only other option would be to buy another RAID
controller, all new drives, build a new RAID, then port all the data
over. I don't think my power supply could handle that :)

I'm going to take this to the "next level" for Chuck.

Running with NO hard drive only proves that "can" be done,
and that nothing from the original "system" hard drive is needed
to "get access" to what ever "other hardware" will be found...
(Remember, this is all done IN the original system --- never
even opening the case...)

I downloaded the PC Beginner CD ISO file and burned the bootable CD. I hope
this is the simple way to unlock data in the My Documents file. Again, I am
really not interested in using the customer's computer for any of this. For
conversation sake, let's assume the customer's computer has a dead
motherboard but all data on the hard drive is intact. I have a shop computer
specifically for working with other hard drives etc. I can easily work with
up to 6 hard drives attached, 4 IDE and 2 SATA. I want to be confident I can
unlock data using my shop computer and copy it to a folder on another hard
drive. I should not have to worry about anything in a customer's computer
but its hard drive. I should feel confident to copy all of a customer's My
Documents data to a new computer I am building for them, even if all they
bring to me is their hard drive. Again, copying the data has never been a
probelm. Unlocking it has.

Thanks,

Chuck
