RE: [H] SVCHost survey
This is in Brian Livingston's newsletter: Finally, a real 'svchost.exe' fix For those of you who've suffered from svchost.exe, which is used by Microsoft Update, going wild and taking 100% of your workstation's CPU resources, help is at hand. Redmond plans to offer up some long-awaited patches to updaters in the foreseeable future. But you can get the needed fixes to solve this problem and get your computer back now — without having to disable Microsoft Update and reverting back to Windows Update, or disabling Automatic Updates altogether. The fix is two-fold. Both of the following patches are needed to fix the issue: • Step 1: KB 927891. Download the fix from Knowledge Base article 927891 (this link is for Windows XP machines) and install it first. • Step 2: WSUS 3.0 client. Next, install the WSUS 3.0 client update. An MSDN article on this update is available in Microsoft's MSDN library. A link to the executable is contained near the very bottom of that article, or you can download the executable using this link. (There is no easy download page at Microsoft yet, because this fix has just come out.) You need this download to install the new Automatic Updates program, which is technically the new WSUS 3.0 client. Even though you may not be using Windows Software Update Services, this download provides you with the new engine that's used by workstations that run Microsoft Update. You may still see your system spike up to 100% CPU usage every now and then. But we should soon get from Microsoft the much needed, permanent fix to this very vexing issue, which many of us have been fighting for months. The promised patches will be deployed to all customers in the coming months, as discussed in the official WSUS blog. These are the links embedded: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=7A81B0CD-A0B9-497E -8A89-404327772E5Adisplaylang=en MSDN article: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa387285.aspx Mark -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Thane Sherrington Sent: Thursday, May 10, 2007 11:13 AM To: The Hardware List Subject: RE: [H] SVCHost survey At 12:22 PM 09/05/2007, Hayes Elkins wrote: That it is most likely wuauclt that is the culprit. Interesting, because I was looking at Halo 2 for PC -- which was just released Tuesday -- as the first PC game worth upgrading my XP to Vista. But the more I hear stuff like this (I have the X-Fi card), the more nervous I get about upgrading to Vista which sucks for gamers. Could Vista be the new 95 or worse, ME? Pants down no lube even if all the drivers work since it so mired in content protection and 1st gen radical security ideas. Last thing I want is OS by Macrovision. By the time they work out the kinks they'll have to call it VistaSE or Vista2SE! Also, any of Scott Sigler's audiobooks rock. His stuff is more of a horror/sci-fi in line with Alien than pure sci-fi but still really good. His voice performance on his older stuff was a little rough in the beginning but got really good in the last one, The Rookie. The Rookie is friggin fantastic. I'm halfway through STALKER and it's *really* immersive, extremely atmospheric, and has some great spooky elements. I'm not a huge fan of the inventory system, and the RPG elements aren't so much my cup of tea. It's a bit buggy, too. [H] Opteron 185 vs AM2/core2duo new build
Hi, I have been contemplating a system upgrade of my AMD64 3700+ system. I know the socket 939 is really at the end of its life, but I hate throwing out the mb, cpu and memory to upgrade to the AM2 or core2 duo. The high end socket 939 chips have been disappearing. I ran across the Opteron 185, a socket 939 dual core 2.6 GHz chip at NewEgg for $330. That's a bit more than I want to spent, but the alternative seems to be $500+ for a completely new system. With the Opteron, I can keep my current setup (which has been working well, knock on wood), upgrade the cpu and then upgrade the memory later. I have a Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-9 mb and 1 GB (2x512) Mushkin PC3200 ram, 2-3-2-6 timing, dual channel. Gigabyte says the Opteron 185 is compatible with a beta BIOS upgrade. Comments or suggestions? Reservations? Will I have a problem with the Opteron chip and unbuffered, non-ECC memory? Thanks, Jim Maki [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[H] iPod and the like suggestions/help
Ok, I want to get an iPod (or something similar). I have an iMac for me and the family and we just love the damn thing. Last night, I imported 100GB / 20K songs in music from my PC to the iTunes software on the iMac. Took awhile. I understand getting music off the iPod is a bitch but aside from that - is there any reason NOT to get one? Is there something better? Last question - The refurbs are 280 and new are 350. Although I can't get my refurb engraved (shucks) - is there any other issues someone knows about? Does anyone have experience with Apple refurbs? I would think a refurb would be best for price and also because it's been gone over and the issues have been addressed (you hope). New or used - they still qualify for the additional year of protection. Again, I don't have to get an iPod, esp. if there is something better. Comments and advice are much appreciated. -- Regards, joeuser - Still looking for the 'any' key...
