Inferior GPU
BD vs. BD/HD-DVD (not really important with hd-dvd dead but if you already have
hd-dvd's)
No dvb-t tuner
eSata

I'm not saying anyone should buy either one, there are better cheaper options
available, but a system to system comparison for a htpc the shuttle is
better/more capable.

An amd 780G system should never cost>$1500, let alone $1000.

Pointless point since this system uses an external 3450 right? Negates the need
and benefit of the 780G.

A 45nm c2d w/ a 3xxx add-in on any current gen-3 intel chipset is not only
great for media pc but no slouch in gaming either - and even then that's not a
$1800 system.

Again, there is no value in that shuttle at that price point.

A 780G system needs to be cheap, VERY cheap, to be valuable.

That's a chipset with integrated IGP when combined with a cpu should be ultra

When I first saw the Shuttle thing I linked somehow I thought it was using

same points it's definitely not as hot as I thought it was.

Re: [H] Very nice Shuttle HTPC

2008-04-12 Thread Chris Reeves
For a gaming PC, I'd agree. For a media center, not so sure. Right now,
there is nothing on the Intel side that compares with the 780G. Not even
close. The G35 chipset is a joke, driver support that sucks, timing issues,
plagued by instability; the G45 is delayed (again).

Since you can get flawless playback using a 780G and a chip as cheap as a
LE-1640, which is absolutely inferior to Intel's Core2 line, but who cares,
it powers a media center to do the one function you want, then it doesn't
matter.

Shuttle's idea is still wrong, though... they are using a micro board, a
3450 separate video card, etc. etc. which just increases cost with no
appreciable benefits for the purpose I'm imagining.

Use a 1T drive, a 780G and something like a LE-1640, or sure, go for a 4400+
or whatever, a basic card, desktop case, and a blueray drive.

Wham. AMD right now doesn't compete at the high end - we definitely see
that. But I haven't found anything nearly as effective, quiet, and stable
as the 780G. I'm a bit unhappy that it doesn't pass full LPCM (only DD/DTS,
2 Channel uncompressed) but for what it does, there is very little in the
marketplace better.

Weren't you just evangelizing the merits of the AMD 780G chipset and its
on-board graphics? I understand a lot of that has to do with the IGP and
not the CPU but it's not like you were going to be able to get the 780 with
an intel chip.

And it's $1500, assuming one doesn't need the HD-DVD drive.
