Re: [H] Mobile phones - Moto v. Samsung

2009-04-30 Thread maccrawj

Uh, neither? ;)

Last Moto's worth looking at were the Razr2's: V8, V9, Z9. The Z9 is no longer
available on AT&T and I don't think Alltel/Verizon ever got one.

Cell phones are shite market right now IMHO, subsidized models sucking worse than
unlocked choices, and Verizon's lobotomized firmwares sucking the most.

I'd never pay for a V3 series given: 1. they're old, 2. they suck, 3. companies were
paying customers $50 to take them on with 2yr contracts.

Joe User wrote:

Hello,

We got an offer from Alltel to upgrade our phones. We've had our
current phones for quite a few years now. Kyocera SOHO's - they serve
us well. Anyway, they offer Motorazr V3a for 29.99 and Samsung Hue II
for 39.99. I like both companies and I know it seems like everyone has
the Motorazr's. Never seen the Samsungs before though.

These phones look like they have cameras etc. In my experience all
this does is give them more ways to charge you for this and that - buy
new cords to plug into a computer to get pictures off - or pay a fee
to email them - etc. Is this still how it is?

Other question - which of these phones is better? Moto or Samsung?
Based off features, usage, and what-not.

2009-04-30 Thread Greg Sevart
Sure it will. You just have to modify a file first. It was done
intentionally, as there's not much value for MS in the upgrade experience
for people going from beta to RC1.

http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2009/04/07/delivering-a-quality-upgrade-exp
erience.aspx

Here's what you can do to bypass the check for pre-release upgrade IF YOU
REALLY REALLY NEED TO:

1. Download the ISO as you did previously and burn the ISO to a DVD.
2. Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade
from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine
running the pre-release build).
3. Browse to the sources directory.
4. Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
5. Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level
build. For example, change 7100 to 7000 (pictured below).
6. Save the file in place with the same name.
7. Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image
and the version check will be bypassed.

I can get Acronis True Image Home 2009 for $29.65. Is this a good
price? It seems the consensus here was that his was a pretty good
package (best?) for backup and imaging. I thought it may be nice to get
Disk Director 10 too but adding that would bring the total to $79.64. Is
DD worth the extra money? Anyone know of any package deals for the two
 that would work out cheaper?

 Thanks!

 Dear Microsoft U.S. Partner,

We hope you are as excited as we are about today’s milestone, as we
make the Microsoft Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) broadly
available for download to managed Beta program participants,
including MSDN and TechNet subscribers. If you are not among those
who participated in one of the managed Beta programs, you only have
to wait until Tuesday, May 5, when the RC will be available through
the Customer Preview Program.

In this bulletin, you will find important links and answers to
questions that are always top of mind for partners and customers in
a release like this. Please look for our regular U.S. partner
newsletter on Monday, May 4, with more details and resources for
Microsoft partners, including training recommendations.

Sincerely,

The Microsoft U.S. Partner Team

Why upgrade to Windows 7 RC?

 •

   Several new features,
including XP VPC, are available in the RC build of Windows 7. Also,
you will experience continued improvements in overall system
performance and polish.

 •

If you are using Windows 7
Beta, migrating to Windows 7 RC will avoid the July 7, 2009, beta
expiration date. Failure to migrate before the beta expiration date
will cause frequent system reboot prompts.

 •

There will be no limits on
the number of keys provided or the number of Windows 7 RC downloads
supported, and we anticipate that RC downloads will be available at
least through June 2009.

What is the recommended path to
migrate to Windows 7 RC?

The recommended path to migrate to Windows 7 RC depends on what
operating system you are currently running:

 Current OS

 Recommended Path to
Windows 7 RC

   Windows XP

   If your hardware
meets the minimum recommendations for Windows 7, we recommend you do
a clean install of Windows 7 RC when available. The recommended
minimum hardware for Windows 7 Beta can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-faq.aspx
. (Hardware recommendations will be roughly the same for RC.)

   Windows Vista

   We recommend you
upgrade to Windows 7 RC.

   Windows 7 Beta

   We strongly recommend
you do a clean install of Windows 7 RC when available. You do not
need to first reinstall Windows Vista and then upgrade to Windows 7
RC.

In all of these scenarios, the
Windows Easy Transfer tool can be used to make it easier to restore
files and settings after a clean install.

When will the final version of Windows 7 be available?
The final engineering milestone is the release to manufacturing
(RTM), typically 3-5 months after the RC. We believe the product is
high quality and to date have received very positive feedback. This
might result in RTM delivery before the 3-5 months timeframe.
Ultimately, you'll decide the quality and assess the delivery once
you download and use the RC. Customer and partner feedback will
determine how quickly we release.

How will Microsoft collect and use feedback from Windows 7 RC?
With this release, we are focused on verifying that all the changes
and fixes we made based on the beta tests and feedback are working
correctly. We do that by gathering the automatically generated
information (called telemetry) that your PC sends us when you use
Windows 7 RC. Telemetry tells us when your computer hangs, crashes,
or has performance issues, and what applications or devices you were
using when you experienced problems. It is important that we gather
this data from thousands of different hardware configurations to
confirm that the fixes we included based on beta feedback work on a
wide range of hardware. It will also help us identify any new
problems.

[H] Win7 rc announcement

2009-04-30 Thread tmservo
The note on unlimited keys is the interesting part

  Dear Microsoft U.S. Partner,

We hope you are as excited as we are about today’s milestone, as we make the
Microsoft Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) broadly available for download to
managed Beta program participants, including MSDN and TechNet subscribers. If
you are not among those who participated in one of the managed Beta programs,
you only have to wait until Tuesday, May 5, when the RC will be available
through the Customer Preview Program.

In this bulletin, you will find important links and answers to questions that
are always top of mind for partners and customers in a release like this.
Please look for our regular U.S. partner newsletter on Monday, May 4, with more
details and resources for Microsoft partners, including training
recommendations.

Sincerely,

The Microsoft U.S. Partner Team

Why upgrade to Windows 7 RC?

  •

Several new features, including XP VPC,
are available in the RC build of Windows 7. Also, you will experience continued
improvements in overall system performance and polish.

  •

If you are using Windows 7 Beta,
migrating to Windows 7 RC will avoid the July 7, 2009, beta expiration date.
Failure to migrate before the beta expiration date will cause frequent system
reboot prompts.

  •

There will be no limits on the number
of keys provided or the number of Windows 7 RC downloads supported, and we
anticipate that RC downloads will be available at least through June 2009.

What is the recommended path to migrate to
Windows 7 RC?

The recommended path to migrate to Windows 7 RC depends on what operating
system you are currently running:

  Current OS

  Recommended Path to Windows 7
 RC

Windows XP

If your hardware meets the
minimum recommendations for Windows 7, we recommend you do a clean install of
Windows 7 RC when available. The recommended minimum hardware for Windows 7
Beta can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-faq.aspx .
(Hardware recommendations will be roughly the same for RC.)

Windows Vista

We recommend you upgrade to
Windows 7 RC.

Windows 7 Beta

We strongly recommend you do a
clean install of Windows 7 RC when available. You do not need to first
reinstall Windows Vista and then upgrade to Windows 7 RC.

In all of these scenarios, the Windows Easy
Transfer tool can be used to make it easier to restore files and settings after
a clean install.
When will the final version of Windows 7 be available?
The final engineering milestone is the release to manufacturing (RTM),
typically 3-5 months after the RC. We believe the product is high quality and
to date have received very positive feedback. This might result in RTM
delivery before the 3-5 months timeframe. Ultimately, you'll decide the
quality and assess the delivery once you download and use the RC. Customer and
partner feedback will determine how quickly we release.

Yeah, about $100 over budget, on a $200 budget is a lot.

Thanks, I have done that a few times. In fact, I loaded the bios setup
defaults and no go. Took the drive and placed into another system
seems fine but I am doing a chkdsk now. If this doesn;t find anything
I will swap the sata cable. They have the cable bent back over itself
and secured with a nylon tie. Not sure if that's OK to do with these

[H] System no boot

2009-04-30 Thread Joe User
Hello,

System booted up fine, then I pressed reset to stop it from booting.
My intention was to get it into safe mode, thats why I reset it.

Tried to get it to boot again and mashing F8 and now it just hangs
after the BIOS/POST. The screen is on so it's getting a signal from
video, but nothing else happens.

I try getting it to boot from the XP CD, it presents the "Press any key
to boot from CD..." but when I press the 'any' key it does the same
thing: nothing - just hangs. Again, the monitor is on but nothing shows.
No HDD activity. No boot. No using either the HDD or the CD doesn't
allow it to boot. I'm stuck.
