There's nothing wrong with using the same SSID / password no. Devices should switch between routers when they use the same SSID, though they may not be very intelligent about leaving the weaker signal and joining the stronger signal. If the AP has the ability to set a "minimal power allowed" that can help but most consumer devices don't provide something like that. I use different SSID's on each access point usually. Your method would work. I suggest checking to see if the router supports DD-WRT and installing a version of that. It will generally allow you to put in AP only mode even if the original version didn't have that option.
