There is lots of different remote software available, and a lot of it is
free. Is there a stand out program for controlling your desktop from afar
using Windows 7 machines?

I think that begs the question...what are the real requirements? I could see
there perhaps being different solutions for different needs--basic remote
admin vs. remote assistance vs. remote console (think IMPI/DRAC/iLO) vs.
working from home/teleworker, etc.

Frankly, excluding the obvious remote KVM, I'm a huge fan of RDP. One little
tweak makes already great performance even better, and the multiple monitor
support available with W7/2K8 R2 (NOT the same as "span" mode) is truly
spectacular when teleworking. As an admin, I like the fact that it's built
into Windows (all server and client business/pro or better) and controllable
via group policy. But, it certainly isn't the best solution for all remote
needs.
