Re: [ha-Safran]: Judaica Library or Judaic Library?

Dear Daniel

You called in the grammar police??

Almost any noun in English may be turned into an adjective without
any change of form; as in an OAK fence, a MANCHESTER man, a KITCHEN
garden, DICTIONARY definitions.

So also with Judaica and so also (if I may) with grammar!!

If you are referring to American Jews - I don't have an answer. If you
are referring to Jews in general, you should consult the Israeli
Government Statistics Annual about book buying in Israel. I seem to
remember that the number of books per capita purchased by israeli Jews
are among the highest in the world.

Have you investigated what CAJE has in their Curriculum bank? If you are
not familiar with CAJE (the Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish
Education, www.caje.org), perhaps someone else at your school is. I believe
you need to be a member to access the Curriculum bank, but they have quite a
collection and it might be worth it to you and your school to look at what
they have.

[ha-Safran]: NEW BOOK: My Yeshiva College: 75 Years of Memories

2006-03-21 Thread Menachem Butler
Dear Safranim:

I am pleased to announce the publication of My Yeshiva College: 75
Years of Memories, a collection of essays that I have recently
co-edited celebrating the past seventy-years of Yeshiva College,
written from the perspective of former students and faculty
members-many of whom still teach at and are involved with Yeshiva
today. The book is an important contribution to the literature about
Judaism in the 20th century and gives a real feel for how Yeshiva
College has impacted its students and the broader American community.

The volume follows the course of Yeshiva College's history, beginning
with the nascent years under founder and first president Rabbi Dr.
Bernard Revel, into the years of rapid growth under Rabbi Dr. Samuel
Belkin, and into the last two and half decades of leadership under
Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm.

My Yeshiva College: 75 Years of Memories includes autobiographical
memoirs by some of Yeshiva College's most prominent graduates and
faculty members, including Ruth A. Bevan, Michael J. Broyde, Hillel
Furstenberg, Irving Greenberg, Lawrence Grossman, Joan G. Haahr,
Nathaniel Helfgot, Jerry Hochbaum, Nathan Kamenetsky, Barry J.
Konovitch, Eugene Korn, Norman Lamm, B. Barry Levy, Aharon
Lichtenstein, Moses Mescheloff, Yehudah Mirsky, Emanuel Rackman,
Aaron Rakeffet-Rothkoff, Marvin Schick, Alvin Schiff, Abraham D.
Sofaer, Fred Sommers, Chaim I. Waxman, Leon Wildes, Efraim Zuroff and
dozens of others!

The book includes an introduction by President Richard Joel of
Yeshiva University, an afterword Dr. Jonathan Sarna of Brandeis
University and appendix by Dr. Chaim Waxman of Rutgers University.
The back cover includes a never-before-published passage from Mr.
Herman Wouk, Pulitzer Prize winner and a professor at Yeshiva College
during the mid-1950s.

The publisher advises that the books can be bought from local
bookstores, Baker Taylor, and YasharBooks.com (ISBN 1-933143-12-6).

RE: [ha-Safran]: Jews buying books

2006-03-21 Thread Miller, Philip
I was dismayed when I read the first posting - I thought there was an
error.

Some 40 years ago, Commentary magazine, I believe, ran a profile of
American Jewry, and one of the stats cited then was that Jews accounted
for some 20% of the books bought in the U.S. Not bad for 3% of the total
population. What did they base this on? Perhaps on some study done by
the American Jewish Committee?

That was then. I have no idea what the number would be today.

While I have great respect for the dangerous work our
grammar police have performed thus far on this topic,
I feel I must highlight a more important point.

The fact that the library's signage, publicity,

vote for retaining the existing name on that ground
alone.
