Re: [Hasafran]: In memory of the desaparecidos
In keeping with the spirit of what our Argentinian colleague Rita Sacca wrote concerning the desaparecidos, I highly recommend the documentary film ASESINO (Israel, 2002, video, 57 min.) by the outstanding Israeli film maker, Nurit Kedar. This film profiles the victims, murdered by the virulently anti-semitic Argentinian military, and the victims' families, whose lives were torn asumnder by what happened to their loved ones. Another excellent film about the Argentinian situation is TO LIVE WITH TERROR (USA, 2002, video, 58 min.), about the attacks in Buenos Aires in the 1990's. Ton Vriens is the director. The film places these brazen murders in the context of historical anti-Semitism in Argentina, ex- President Carlos Menem's ties to the Arab world and even Israeli government reluctance to pressure the Argentinians to investigate the crimes. Re: In memory of the desaparecidos
I'm afraid that Hayim Sheynin has unfortunately already besmirched the approximately 3,000 Jews among the 30,000 Argentinians who disappeared through his unecessarily harsh comments. It is well-established that the Argentinain police and military were systemically anti-Semitic. To say that these Jews, most of them young and vibrant in their beliefs and commitment to social justice, had no connection to what I perceive as a rather narrow view of what constitutes being Jewish gives their lives and the lives of their mourning families a shockingly disgraceful put-down. Are we so far removed from the events of 1933 to 1945 that we've forgotten what the criteria were for being Jewish during the Shoa? Were all those tragically cut short lives only people who participated in Jewish movements and in Jewish causes? Were they not *all* of them Jewish martyrs? Shabbat shalom, Bernard. [Hasafran]: Jewish Desaparecidos in Argentina
Dear Safranim, There are many facts that you should know about this issue: 1. The military government in 1976-2003 was anti Semitic. 2. In the democratic Peronist government before the coup d'etat, there were also very strong anti Semitic trends. 3. In general the Jewish community haven't suffer from an anti Semitic policy in the dictatorship years and their activities flourished. 4. In general people were not kidnapped or jailed because being Jewish but they suffer twice or more tortures and violations for their Jewishness. 5. Timmerman was indeed a desaparecido but world pressure leaded by Israel helped to save him. He was released from domiciliary prison [last stage of his detention] thanks to the intervention of Israel which received him as ole chadash. His attitude after his release is very controversial. There are many publications about him, his personality, etc. One of them: Graciela Mochkofsky, Timerman - El periodista que quiso ser parte del poder (1923-1999) [ISBN 950-07-2420-0]. I don't know if it has been translated into English. As I have told you in many occasions, in Israel acted a Interministerial Commission for the Disappeared in 2000-2003, and its Final Report, with all the testimonies and many other material is in the following webpage which I edited [Hebrew and Spanish]: www.mfa.gov.il/desaparecidos If somebody has questions, please feel free to contact me. [Hasafran]: index of fairy tale themes in Jewish picture books
For my final project for an MLS course in indexing and abstracting, I want to create a web index highlighting fairy tale themes / subjects / types? found in Jewish picture books. For example, Raisel's Riddle by Erica Silverman is a Cinderella story for Purim. Is this of interest to anyone besides me? Has it already been done? Any suggestions? I've stumbled across information about folklore motifs and types. Are they still used? Is there a thesaurus or list of entries already out there? Obviously, this is not something I have ever formally studied. [Hasafran] Book on the Mishkan
Hello, A local religious school is studying Leviticus next year and wants to try to make it real for preschoolers by making a Mishkan. So, the teacher needs a book on the mishkan so that a parent (who has volunteered!) can build one. Do any one you know of a book that can help? Pictures would be useful. Thanks so much and Shabbat Shalom! The New York Times recently reviewed the new book titled The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, calling it Harry Potter and the Holocaust. Have any of you looked at or read this book? Re: [Hasafran]: index of fairy tale themes in Jewish picture books
Re: Rose Myers posting: Fairy tale motifs are indeed still in use. When I worked in a public library, we relied on the Index to Fairy Tales, which may not still be published but would be worth looking into for your purposes. Along with the standard Stith Thompson system (on which the Index was based), the Israel Folk Archives has a motif classification scheme. Some Jewish anthologists and storytellers give IFA numbers to the stories in their books. See Solomon and the Ant and Other Jewish Folktales (Boyds Mills Press, 2006). Others who sometimes refer to motifs and always cite sources are Howard Schwartz, Peninna Schram, and Nina Jaffe. Look in any of their collections for examples and also for models of authoritative sourcing of Jewish folklore. Sharon Elswit, the author of THE JEWISH STORY FINDER (McFarland, 2005) categorizes Jewish folktales according to a typology that I believe is of her own devising. Consult her book; it would also probably be helpful if you contacted her. Almost all of the stories in Elswit's book are in collections; it includes far fewer individual illustrated versions. The same is true for Oberman. I don't know of any Jewish source that indexes or categorizes by motif single illustrated books so you'd be breaking new ground. The ValuesFinder's annotations might be of help. Do a subject search for folklore at www.ajljewishvalues.org. Contact me directly if I can be of more help. Good luck!
