Subject: Reference question
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Joseph, I need to find the title or author of this poem by Tuesday
September 18th at 12:00 noon.
I don't know the time period. I don't know if it is Hebrew or
English, but the quotation from the poem I need to find is Where are
all the Assyrians?
Please also tell me how you found it.
The poem is about a man walking among many Jews, on a crowded city
street, asking the question, Where are all the Assyrians?

Thanks so much for your help.

2007-09-17 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Dov Noy considers a folktale Jewish if it contains at least one of
the following:

a Jewish life cycle event (like a bar mitzvah or Jewish holiday);
a Jewish setting (like a synagogue or a shetl);
a Jewish character;
or a Jewish message (like hospitality or charity).

Hope this helps.

[ha-Safran]: New holocaust diary?

Dear Hasafranim,

A patron recently asked me about a newly published Holocaust diary
similar to Anne Frank's but written by a girl from Poland. Of course,
she didn't have the precise title. Any ideas?

[ha-Safran]: BBC News: Radical books in London libraries

Radical books in London libraries
By Richard Watson Correspondent, BBC Newsnight

Newsnight report
Public libraries serving the densest population of Muslims in London
have been inundated with extremist literature, according to a report.

Multiple copies of books were found in Tower Hamlets that would
feature on any jihadist reading list, the report obtained by the BBC said.

Tower Hamlets Council said their Islamic collections had been
imbalanced, but they were improving.

The report was by right-leaning think tank the Centre for Social Cohesion.

[ha-Safran]: New Library - Cataloging System?

2007-09-17 Thread R Polsky
Hi everyone,

As a recent graduate with an MLIS, I am currently employed (today's
my first day!) at a Jewish Teachers Resource Center in Chicago.

I will be building their K-12 teachers' library (both secular and
Jewish) from scratch. It will consist primarily of reference
materials ( non-lending), but we'll eventually having a lending
library as well. I have several questions to ask some of the more
experienced Jewish librarians...

1. Which cataloging system/s do you recommend (strictly Dewey,
Elazar, Wein, combo?)?
I want it to be as user-friendly (for teachers) as possible.

2. How about automation systems?

3. How do you recommend I retrieve cataloging info for my Jewish
titles and seforim?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Rachel,
I assume you might be talking about Tell Me Another Morning: An
Autobiographical Novel - by Zdena Berger, which has just been
re-released (from original 1961 version) and is making quite a
splash, but she was from Prague.

Re: [ha-Safran]: New holocaust diary?

2007-09-17 Thread Sherry Wasserman
I think you may be talking about a new book published last June by Yad Vashem:

Laskier, Rutka
Rutka's notebook - January-April 1943
Yad Vashem, 08/2007 $24.00 paperback, 60 p.

Description:
A girl from Bedzin, Poland, age 14, the same age as the Dutch
teenager Anne Frank, kept a diary for a few brief months in 1943.

The outside world slowly closed down on her, but these few sheets of
paper - some 60 handwritten pages in a notebook - reflect both the
horrors of the Holocaust and the entire universe of an adolescent
Jewish girl in the shadow of death.

Rutka shared the diary with her friend Stanislawa Sapinska. The two
met after Rutka's family moved into a home owned by Sapinska's family
that had been confiscated by the Nazis so that it could be included
in the ghetto. The two became friendly and when Rutka told her that
she felt she would not survive, Stanislawa offered to hide the diary
in the basement under one of the floorboards. At the end of the war,
Stanislawa returned to the house and found the hidden diary. She kept
the diary in her home library for more than 60 years and recently
decided to make it available to the public.

The last entry is from 24 April 1943. In August, Rutka and her family
were deported to Auschwitz. She is believed to have been murdered
upon arrival. Rutka's father, Yaakov, was the family's only survivor.
He moved to Israel where he began a new family, a family who has now
been given the rare opportunity to get to know a sister and an aunt
who was murdered long before they were born.

It's probably Rutka's Diary, written by a 14 year old Polish girl. Published
in 2007 by Yad Vashem. For more information about Rutka and the diary's
discovery and publication look at the Wikipedia article Rutka
