[ha-Safran]: ALA expresses concern over impact on libraries

2009-03-18 Thread Bernard Katz
David is of course correct in noting the 'bare bones' wprding of the
ALA resolution on Dina Carter's death. The next line after the one he
quoted is no better: ALA condemns the violence that resulted in the
loss of Dina Carter's life - as he said there is no indication as to
who was responsible. Apart from that, however, it's fine.

Hi Everyone!

Passover is a Jewish holiday, of Biblical origin, marking the
birth of the Jews as a people and their emergence as a unique
nation in history, devoted to G-d's will. It celebrates the
liberation of the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt
over 3000 years ago, under the leadership of Moses.

This year Passover begins on Wednesday night, April 8, 2009.

I posted on my website 152 links about Passover,
ranging from laws and customs to games and recipes.
Site languages include English, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish,
French, Portugese, Italian and German.

All 152 links have been reviewed / checked this week.
The web address is:

and..

I gathered links to 80 cool Passover videos on YouTube.
Enjoy the videos at:

Please forward this message to family and friends,
so they may benefit from these holiday resources.

An early Happy Passover!

[ha-Safran]: New JPS YA book announcement: Elvina's Mirror

2009-03-18 Thread Anita Bihovsky
New from the Jewish Publication Society:
Elvina's Mirror
By Sylvie Weil
http://www.jewishpub.org/product.php?id=315
Ages 10 and UP
Originally published in French and translated by the author
The tale of Rashi's granddaughter, a young girl who defies her
community to help a friend in need

In this sequel to My Guardian Angel, Sylvie Weil continues the story
of Elvina, the 14-year-old granddaughter of Rashi, the famous
11th-century French Bible and Talmud commentator.
It is the spring of 1097 in the town of Troyes, in France. The
Crusaders have been marauding their way through Europe, attacking
Jewish communities. One evening, a mysterious family arrives in
Troyes—German Jews forced by the Crusaders to submit to baptism. The
townspeople shun the family, but Elvina befriends 11-year-old Columba.
Columba's mad cousin, Ephraim, steals a mirror from a member of the
Jewish community, believing it will let him see his family killed in
the recent attacks. Elvina tries to help Ephraim rid his mind of the
terrible images by bringing him her own mirror, in which she claims
to see a positive future.
Elvina's story brings the often-ignored world of Medieval European
Jewry to life for young readers
Sylvie Weil was raised in Paris and earned her degrees in classics
and French literature at the Sorbonne. She has taught French
literature at Barnard, Bennington, and Hunter colleges, and the
Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She is the author
of several works of adult fiction and the Elvina trilogy, a series of
French novels for young adults. The first book in the trilogy, le
Mazal d'Elvina, (My Guardian Angel), won the Prix Sorcieres, a
prestigious French prize awarded for the best novel for young readers.

[ha-Safran]: Preserving the American Historical Record Legislation

2009-03-18 Thread Joy Rich
Forwarded by Joy Rich

=

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/APG/2009-03/1237315376

From: Robert de Berardinis r-e-...@sbcglobal.net
Subject: [APG] PAHR Legislation
Date: Tue, 17 Mar 2009 13:42:56 -0500

Dearr All,

Texas State Archivist Chris La Plante, Secretary of the Society of
State Archivists, asks
that this be forwarded to as many genelogical list servs as possible
and to contact your
representatives. Thanks, Robert de Berardinis

Now's the time to step up for PAHR.

Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D, NY) and Congressman John McHugh (R,
NY) have just sent a
dear colleague letter to the members of the House of
Representatives inviting them to
sign on as original sponsors for the Preserving the American
Historical Records bill.

What can I do?

Before March 20th, fax, email, or call your Representative and urge
him/her to respond to
the Hinchey-McHugh Dear Colleague Letter by signing on as an original
sponsor for the PAHR
bill. Ask them to contact Mike Iger in Congressman Hinchey's office
(202-225-6335) or
Jason Miller in Congressman McHugh's office (202-225-4611)

Tell them in a few sentences why PAHR will benefit their
constituents-that means you, your
organization, and your researchers.

Send them the attached explanation of PAHR, and explain why PAHR will
benefit your state
and your institution.

It is essential to have a strong set of co-sponsors for this bill for
it to succeed. The
level of support we get right now will tell Congress whether the bill
is viable, or just
one of those bills introduced to please a constituent but not taken seriously.

And if you can do a little more.Encourage others to contact your
Representative as well.
Genealogists, local government officials, researchers of all kinds,
teachers, veterans,
and even your favorite aunt can make the case.

If you need help or more information:

* visit http://www.archivists.org/pahr - you'll find the PAHR fact
sheet, a copy of the
bill, draft letters and resolutions and other materials to help you
understand and
encourage your Representative to support PAHR.

* contact us at p...@statearchivists.org for any other help or
information you need

Please take a few minutes in the coming week to make a call, pay a
visit, or send a
fax/email/letter to your Members of Congress. It's time to tell
Congress that what we do
matters a great deal to this country and its inhabitants. Americans
need and deserve the
resources to ensure access to our heritage. We can do this-with your help!

Dear all,

I'm not sure if I can ask about this, as it's not a Jewish question but . . .

Our Head of School is asking me about a program called Junior Great
Books which I'd never heard of. There is a website which I've been looking at.

Do any of your schools use this? If so, has it proved to be useful in
your school?

Also, I've heard of the Accelerated Reader program, and there's a
website which I will take a good look at. Again, can I ask if your
school uses it and finds it useful?

Lastly, do you know of any program for gifted students being used
in your school?

Thank you all so much for your help.

Safranim,

One of the administrators in my school is searching for a good
retelling of the exodus story that can be used as a read-aloud for
2nd graders and that draws heavily upon the biblical narrative. The
idea is to have the story read-aloud to the class, and then to have
the class diagram the story.

I showed her Josh Hanft's 'The Miracle of Passover' (2007) and she
liked it, however she was wondering if there was another text that
incorporates larger selections of the biblical text. Does anyone know
of anything that fits the bill?

Feel free to contact me off-list, and I will gladly summerize the
suggestions for anyone interested.

Thanks so much for your anticipated assistance.

L'shalom,

2009-03-18 Thread Etta Gold
You may want to stay after our AJL conference in Chicago for a couple days
- Original Message -

As you may know, the American Library Association's Annual Conference
is in Chicago this summer, July 10-13th! A person does not need to
register to attend the entire conference to attend a one day
preconference! The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA)
is offering 2 preconferences on Friday, July 10th:
Genre Galaxy: Explore the Universe of Teen Reading 9am-5pm
Do you work on readers advisory or programming with teens? Come
listen to many popular young adult authors including Holly Black,
Cecil Castellucci, David Lubar and Dom Testa. Enjoy hearing teens
tell you what they really like to read and how you can reach them.
Experience firsthand mini programs on mystery and un-romance themes.
In addition to a day of inspiring activities and a fabulous lunch,
all participants will leave with stacks of booklists and ideas for
new ways to promote genres at school and public libraries of every size.

Moving up the YA Career Ladder 12:00-5:00pm
Learn how to move up the career ladder successfully! Participants will:
Identify career options for YA librarians
Understand how to identify and sharpen skills needed to successfully
transition careers
Learn how to effectively write resumes and CVs
Assess their management style and identify the management style of others
Whether you are a new or seasoned librarian, this preconference will
provide you with the practical tools and information that you will be
able to begin using immediately.
