Their four-year terms will begin in January. The committee benefits from the diverse membership of AJL, and with the unique talents and experience of the incoming members, we are confident the high standards of the committee will continue. Debbie Feder is the Director of the Library Resource Center at Ida Crown Jewish Academy in Chicago. An active member of the Chicago AJL Chapter, Debbie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and earned her MLS from Dominican University. Debbie, who also worked at the Skokie Public Library, is a lover of children's literature, first enthralled by All-of-a-Kind-Family. Aimee Lurie comes to the committee with experience in a variety of Jewish libraries, including the Temple-Tifereth Israel, the Fairmount Temple and the Agnon School, as well as public libraries. Amy has reviewed books for the AJL Newsletter and VOYA and feels that reviewing books is every librarian's professional responsibility and it has always played a critical role in my personal professional development. Not only does it play an invaluable role in collection development, I have found it is the best way to keep your finger on the pulse of publishing trends. Aimee is active in the Cleveland chapter of AJL and holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Ohio State and an MLS from Kent State University. Nancy Silverrod is a librarian at San Francisco Public Library. Nancy graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Michigan University and earned her MILS at the University of Michigan. Nancy states that My reading over the years led me to a deeper connection and involvement with Judaism, and the opportunity to recommend high quality books to interested readers is one of the things I most enjoy about my work a great combination. Barbara Bietz of Oak Park, California will assume the chairmanship. She is the author of Like a Maccabee (Yaldah Publishing, 2006). As a freelance writer, her work has appeared in numerous publications, and she is a frequent reviewer for Jewish Book World and the AJL Newsletter. The 2009-2010 Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee will also include Debbie Colodny(Libertyville, Illinois), Rita Soltan (West Bloomfield, Michigan); Kathe Pinchuck (Clifton, New Jersey), past chair; and Rachel Kamin (Chicago, Illinois), compiler. Heidi Estrin (Boca Raton, Florida) will assist the committee as AJL Public Relations Liason. Tremendous Harkaras Hatov (appreciation) to Susan Berson (Denver, Colorado) and Kathy Bloomfield (Wellesley, Massachusetts) who have served their four-year terms on the committee with distinction. May this be a year of health, peace and prosperity for us and all of Klal Yisrael. [ha-Safran]: New STBA Committee Members
My best to all three new members of the committee and thanks to those going off. Those of us in in Cleveland's AJL chapter are especially happy to see that one of our members, Aimee Lurie, is on the committee because Cleveland has always had an important presence on it, with not only members but several chairs. It's a professionally rewarding but also challenging job to read lots of books and decide which of them are of Jewish content and which, by critical standards, are of literary/artistic distinction. As a former committee chair, I know how tempting it is for committee members to confuse good books with likable authors and I hope the committee will remember to focus on the writing and on genuinely Jewish content. Re: [ha-Safran]: Gale Racism Encyclopedia let-down
In response to my update about Gale's failure to respond to its editorial mistakes with integrity, I have received several notes asking for follow-up information. First, contact information: Helene Potter's email address is helene.pot...@cengage.com Ms. Potter's immediate boss, who also spoke with me last fall, is Jay Flynn, Vice President and Publisher, Social Sciences Gale | Cengage Learning 27500 Drake Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48331 jay.fl...@cengage.com I pulled that information from correspondence between Mr. Flynn and other AJL members shared via HaSafran. Perhaps the more of us who express our outrage publicly, the less likely that any one of us will be singled out in a defamation suit. A zebras in a herd syndrome, I suppose. Though I make light of this point, the fact that Ms. Potter didn't respond to my note during the time it waited to be posted worries me a bit. Past notes, even those not shared with Gale editors directly, have drawn almost immediate reactions, sometimes phone calls. What does silence portend? In terms of other routes for action, I'm not sure what might be effective. Part of my anger and frustration with this recent turn of events is that we've lost momentum while Gale has become further entrenched in its position. But for what it is worth, there is an online petition. http://www.petitiononline.com/GaleMac/ Share this link with others, not just librarians, who need to see it. Get the word out to other Jewish organizations you have contact with. Blog about it. Share what has happened with anyone you think will listen. Some caveats about what you should or should not say. The conversation between Helene Potter and me was meant to be confidential. I did take notes and embarrassment is featured. I also just noticed nasty business among her comments. And a note saying that the volume editor, as well as the article author, were not being included in their plans. I also have email correspondence with Ms. Potter establishing that she initiated contact and asked to speak on phone. There were a couple of email follow-ups, including one from her with a copy of the composite they used to solicit the replacement articles. However, despite all this, what was actually said is up for dispute if Ms. Potter or Gale decides they don't like what I'm saying. If you are quoting anything I've conveyed, I recommend that you accurately identify sources and attribution. e.g., According to email from Lee Jaffe, Helene Potter told him ... As far as I know AJL still has not taken an official or public position on this matter. There should be official communications made to our sister library organizations, even if there is little chance they will be sympathetic. The fact that the encyclopedia was named an ACRL Notable Reference Book is a particularly painful point. BTW, I'm trying to get a slot on a local panel about Notable Book titles. I've let the coordinator that my presentation will provide an eye-opening peek at how our reference books are being made. Another, indirect, approach for AJL would be creating a white paper about confronting anti-semitism and anti-Israel bias in publications. This lack falls to me, since I offered to draft something, with the support of the AJL leadership, and never did. I'll pick up that thread shortly. Just in case we might start to feel that this is just another instance of anti-semitism or anti-Israeli bias, you may want to read the following item, describing a heated and nasty dispute surrounding publication of a Christian encyclopedia, with many of the same overtones we're encountering with Gale. http://www.christiancentury.org/article_print.lasso?id=6542 It seems that scholarly reference publishing is the next ideological battleground. [ha-Safran]: Librarian's Lobby for September 2009
After taking off from writing the column for the summer here is the first column for 5770. Last August someone asked me why a writer used a particular system of Romanizing Hebrew. I gave a quick answer then, but the topic deserved greater study. The challenge of transcribing sounds or transliterating words from one script to another is an ancient challenge. The Romans when they entered ancient Israel were the first to have a need to write Hebrew words in Latin characters. No orthography fits the oral language precisely. This month's column, Transliteration of Hebrew, may be downloaded from: http://home.earthlink.net/~ddstuhlman/crc107.pdf It is in PDF format to accommodate the Hebrew and illustrations. I wish everyone shannah tovah umitukah. May this year be one of peace, respect for one another, prosperity for all, and good health. May your family and friends be a source of strength and support to enable us all to make this a better place to live. The address for submissions, as she metioned, is: ajlseat...@gmail.com or Toby Harris, c/o Temple Beth Am, 2632 NE 80th St, Seattle, WA 98115. Please send all proposals to Toby. I would like to encourage RAS members to submit presentation topics. Toby mentioned a number of possible topics. Now that we are Research Libraries, ARCHIVES, and Special Collections, I hope that we will receive a number of presentation proposals related to archives. I would love to hear a discussion about how Google Books and Internet Archive, as well as other digitizing projects, are affecting decisions about purchases of rare and out of print materials. A discussion of library policies on weeding of older monographs and journals that are available electronically would also be very timely. All other topics related to Judaica libraries and archives are welcome. If you want to hold an RAS committee meeting during the convention, please send an e-mail to me directly in the near future, including information about preferred timing. [ha-Safran]: The Jericho Scrolls by Rafael Ruppin
Announcing the publication in the United States and the United Kingdom: Title: The Jericho Scrolls by Rafael Ruppin Soft Cover, 792 pages, USD-$27.95, GBP-18.95 ISBN: 978-965-7344-56-9 Distributed by Ingram, Baker Taylor, Amazon.com and Barnes Noble Discerning readers will find The Jericho Scrolls to be one of the most fascinating documents of the century. The Jericho Scrolls, which are the historical recollections of Guria Julius Antigonos - Statesman, Roman Knight and Jewish Leader were just found by an antique dealer in Jericho, buried in a leaden chest sealed with tar from the Dead Sea. Now documented, these diaries, which comprise eight scrolls of delicate Egyptian papyrus, were written and completed 1,900 years ago. Guria's historical diary creates a turning point for everything known until now about Jewish and world history during the second half of the first century of the current era. In fact, the diary includes stories that Josephus Flavius could not tell about the Jews. As president of the first State of Eretz Israel, Guria Julius Antigonos documents the Roman holocaust of the Jewish People and the struggle under his leadership to establish a democratic government within the Promised Borders of Israel. A surprising similarity and parallel between the social and political events that occurred in the State of Eretz Israel, post Second Temple destruction, and the events occurring in the present day State of Israel emerges from this historical novel. --- Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@osu.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org

[ha-Safran]: Library consultant for small library
I am posting this for a friend who lives near New York City: I'm looking for a library consultant.. The middle school in Great Neck, where my daughter goes, has no library, and the new administration there wants to address that truly shameful lack. They also have no space for a bona fide library; somehow it has to share with the computer room. So what's needed is an extremely creative consultant to figure out how best to allocate and utilize the space and get the project going. The school has gotten one proposal and is looking for one or two more. Please do not respond to me.
