[ha-Safran]: My Life In Seven Languages

2011-01-20 Thread MAZO
My Life In Seven Languages
by George P. Fletcher

George P. Fletcher is considered to be one of today's leading legal
scholars in the fields of torts and criminal law, in particular,
comparative and international criminal law.

Reflecting on the events in his personal and professional life during
the past 70 years, the linguistic dimension clearly dominates and
overshadows these activities. Growing up in the United States at a
time when English was considered to be the only language needed,
Fletcher mastered six additional languages.

As his father, Fleischer Miklos, always told him, The more languages
you know, the more personalities you have.

As a result of his fluency, he was thrust to the forefront of the
international legal world. My Life in Seven Languages, a lingustic
memoir, probes Fletcher's legal experiences and family relationships
that would not have otherwise been possible as a mono-linguist.

George P. Fletcher is the Cardozo Professor of Jurisprudence at
Columbia Law School.

[ha-Safran]: Traditions and encounters

2011-01-20 Thread Beverly Geller
A social studies teacher here showed me a new textbook that he had
received for review. It is called Traditions and Encounters: a
global perspective on the past , edited by Bentley and Ziegler and
published by McGraw Hill. (AP edition). It shows a map of Israel
and Phoenicia on page 38 which labels the entire area Palestine.

I would like to make others aware of this inaccuracy so that the
publisher will receive many emails and will correct this .

Thank you.

[ha-Safran]: Barry Deutsch available in NYC in March

2011-01-20 Thread Heidi Estrin
Hi everyone,

Barry Deutsch, author/illustrator of the 2011 Sydney Taylor Book
Award winner in the Older Readers Category, Hereville: How Mirka Got
Her Sword, is going to be in NYC in March 13-15. He is hoping to
find school librarians in NYC who might be interested in having him
come in and present. He's got a slideshow he's done at elementary
schools near his home in Portland and Seattle, and has gotten great
responses. If you are interested, please contact him directly at
barry.deut...@gmail.com.

Thanks,
Heidi Estrin

2011-01-20 Thread Heidi G Lerner
Dear Chaya,

f it is helpful, I beleive that the date of publication is:

January 12, 1996.

This information was obtained from p. 112 of
Two Jews, three opinions: a collection of twentieth-century American
Jewish quotations.-[via Google Books].

My institution does not carry that date.

Re: [ha-Safran]: SSC Librarians in particular: Really old books

2011-01-20 Thread Emily Bergman
Ann,

A couple of years ago, there was a hasafran message about sending
Jewish materials to prisons for Jewish prisoners. That's where I've
been sending my books (though I have to say I've never heard back
from them that they received the
boxes). http://www.jewishprisonerservices.org/dormantjudaica.htm. I
also recently read a post about sending them to China, but I haven't
followed up on that yet. In both cases, you have to pay
postange. My paid job is in an academic library (I run my
congregational library as a volunteer), and we just sent almost 1,000
boxes to Better World Books. They certainly don't want that many,
and it was a special case on our part, but they do have minimum. The
plan is that they sell the books, you get 15% of the sale, and 5%
goes to a predetermined literacy program (I chose Room to
Read). They will send the boxes, and they pay shipping.

RE: [ha-Safran]: SSC Librarians in particular: Really old books

2011-01-20 Thread Toby Harris
I've sold some to interested Judaic booksellers, had book sales, but
given most of them to Jewish Prisoners
International: www.jewishprisonerservices.org

However, when I say most, I really haven't made a dent in my
deselection and we desperately need space on our shelves for newer
books. I also am keeping any that I deem essential and/or reserving
some for an internal historical collection.
