JTA closely tracked antisemitism at home and abroad, and played an especially important role in documenting the Holocaust as it was taking place. The Shoah looks entirely different on the pages of JTA than in the New York Times. In addition, JTA employed secret sources behind the iron curtain, and closely covered the story of Soviet Jews. [ha-Safran]: post-pesach news from Jerusalem Books
5 May 5, 2011 Dear Friends, All of us at Jerusalem Books hope that all of you had an enjoyable, possibly even memorable Passover. There have been so many wonderful books published in Israel that it can only bring joy to a bookseller's heart. In keeping with the beautiful renovation of its galleries the Israel Museum has published an outstanding book entitled,' Me'ah Shenot Omanut Yisraelit,' 100 Years of Israeli Art. The book by Yigal Tsalmona, the Chief Curator is 503 pages all in Hebrew and records the development if Israeli art with text and reproductions of major works. The book has works, analysis and an index of over two hundred artists as well as footnotes. What can be said about such a creation. It has Art History and Jewish cultural as well as Israeli political history. It is multi-faceted and multi- media making reference to sculpture, posters, paintings and architecture and photography. I am sure that many will agree that this book transcends narrow categorization and should be a part of a Jewish library collection. Isbn 978 965 278 378 3 Cat. # 76124 $76.00 Hebrew Literature is an essential topic and we promise to revisit cover it in depth at other times and particularly in other forums vis-a-vis those special clients who have serious interest and needs in this area. Having said this we should mention just a few highlights. 'The Poetry Beyond Words,' 'ha-Shira she-me-ever la-milim,' is a classic on the Hebrew Poetry of Natan Zach, by the author. It is published by KB"M (ha-Kibbutz ha-Me'uhad), 2011 and covers almost thirty years of the authors literary life, 1954-1973 and will interest all those interested in Hebrew and Israeli literature and those who are involved in research of literature or literary criticism. Cat. # 76471 $44.00 Also not to be missed, Aharon Appelfeld's, 'Mayim Adirim,' Mighty Waters, the latest novel by the internationally recognized Israeli writer. The book will enthrall and entertain as it reveals the story of it's main character the noble farmer who searches for justice not to mention meaning and love. Isbn 978 965 517 975 0 Cat # 76730 $39.00 Jewish Thought or Philosophy and Rabbinics, aka Sifre Kodesh, overlap and we will skip the difficulties and mechanics of that topic. Makhon Van Leer and Magnes have published 'Rav be-Olam ha-Hadash,' 'Rabbi in the New World : the Influence of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveichik on Culture, Education and Jewish Thought,' edited by Avinoam Rosenak and Naftali Rothenberg. This book includes a collection of scholarly chapters by leading figures in modern Jewish Studies on the teachings, philosophy and influence of this important 20th Century CE, rabbi and scholar. The book traverses many important fields of study from Bible interpretation exegesis, Talmud, scientific critical Jewish Studies, Modern Orthodoxy and much more. Prof. Joseph (Yossi) Turner discusses what some have called his integrationist philosophy which allows for embracing and study of modernity. The precepts of 'tora u-mada' the combination of Jewish studies and science, math, law, for example are amply analyzed in the chapters of the book. The limitations of this thinking as it approaches recognition of differing streams and pluralism in Judaism, as seen by Rav Soloveichic are acknowledged. In other chapters the founding and growth of Yeshiva University are chronicled along with figures like Bernard Revel . Still other chapters deal with the openness to interfaith dialog and its limitations or conditions within modern orthodoxy. In summation the book is a broad and deep window into the foundations and thinking of the 'modern orthodox' world.Isbn 978 965 493 517 3, Cat. # 76715 $ 42.00 Feldheim has published a quality and important work entitled, 'Gedole ha-Musar be-shevile ha-talmud.' The book is structured and divided according to Talmud Tractates, (Mesekhtot), and the works of these leading Rabbinic Mussar sages are cited to each book, part and page. The books of the aforementioned sages as well as earlier sages, such as the Saba mi-Kelm, (R' Sincha Zisel Broide), the Savot of Novhordok and Slobodka are also included and cited. Includes 58 color and black/white images. Kehillat ha-Kodesh was an exhibition which examined the offices of rabbi, shochet (ritual slaughterer), mohel (circumciser) and cantor. These professionals were appointed by the community to enable Jews to fulfill the basic ritual requirements of everyday life. They served both as leaders and teachers: not only did they perform rituals on behalf of the community, but they trained and certified the next generation of leaders as well, ensuring continuity of Jewish life. The exhibition brought together visually outstanding works that illustrated these dual roles and engaged viewers in an exploration of the material culture created by these professions and preserved by the library. Kehillat ha-Kodesh consisted of magnificently decorated documents, historically significant manuscripts and rare printed books showcasing these professionals as pillars of Jewish communal life. Many of these objects had never before been exhibited; the exhibition allowed a glimpse into a rarely seen segment of the library's outstanding collection of illustrated broadsides. Highlights of this exhibition include lavishly decorated broadsides created in honor of the circumcision ceremony and documents associated with eminent leaders of the Jewish community, such as, a semikhah (rabbinical ordination) issued by Hayyim Yosef David Azulai and a magnificent shechitah and bedikah certificate given to Samuel ben Isaac Luzzato by the Jewish community of Venice, 1768. In addition, a richly detailed portrait of the diversity of Jewish life is clear through such fascinating documents as an extremely rare shehitah kabbalah granted to a woman to practice ritual slaughter in Mantua, 1581 and an unusual milah book written in Barbados in 1765. [ha-Safran]: On-Line Catalog Access
We are upgrading the synagogue library software to a web-based system with an on-line catalog. We are in the process of deciding whether we should restrict access to the catalog to synagogue members only or to make it available to everyone. I would be interested in knowing your thoughts about access to on-line synagogue catalogs. Are there any down-sides, potential problems, or other issues (including hacking) that we should consider if we were to allow full access to everyone. If we made the catalog available to members only, that would be an added "perk" that congregants would have. However, it would be good library public relations to make our historic collection available to the larger community. The question of security (will we get the books back from a non-member?) is a problem that some people are concerned about. How have you dealt with these issues and what decisions have you made about your on-line catalogs? We'd appreciate any help/insight you can offer. Thanks in advance, Paula Fine Cong. Linda G. Arntzenius $21.99 Founded in 1930, the Institute for Advanced Study was conceived of high ideals for the future of America and its system of higher education, and was made possible by sibling philanthropists Louis Bamberger and Caroline Bamberger Fuld. Guided by education expert Abraham Flexner, the Bambergers created an independent institution devoted to the pursuit of knowledge. The Institute for Advanced Study opened its arms to scholars "without regard to race, creed, or sex." It provided a haven for Jewish intellectuals fleeing Nazi Germany, including Albert Einstein, who remained on the permanent faculty until his death in 1955, and became the intellectual home of such luminaries as J. Robert Oppenheimer, John von Neumann, Kurt Gödel, Marston Morse, Oswald Veblen, Hermann Weyl, Homer A. Thompson, Erwin Panofsky, George F. Kennan, Clifford Geertz, and Freeman Dyson. "Jewish Pioneers of the Black Hills Gold Rush " SD. Ann Haber Stanton $21.99 The very name Deadwood conjures up vivid Wild West images: saloons with swinging doors, brazen dance-hall girls, buckskin-clad Calamity Jane roaming the streets with her erstwhile paramour, Wild Bill Hickok. The setting is the lawless Dakota Territory of 1876 at the start of the Black Hills gold rush, a stampede for the golden pay dirt. One would hardly expect to find a Jewish pioneer grocer named Jacob Goldberg in this scene, yet Deadwood's story is incomplete without Goldberg. And Goldberg's story is incomplete without either Calamity Jane or Wild Bill. Not just Goldberg, but Finkelstein (also known as Franklin), Stern (also known as Star), Jacobs, Schwarzwald, Colman, Hattenbach, and many other Jews joined the throngs. The Jews provided much more than overalls, chamberpots, and the chambers in which to put them. They also became the mayors, legislators, and civic leaders who helped bring sense and stability to this unruly expanse. Those of you who, as I did, were excited by the portrayal of the Jewish mechant in the HBO Series 'Deadwood' the truth of an even more Jewish Deadwood will prove an added pleasure. "The New York City Triangle Factory Fire" NY. Leigh Benin, Rob Linne, Adrienne Sosin, Joel Sosinsky, HBO Documentary Films $21.99 Through historic images, "The New York City Triangle Factory Fire" honors the victims' sacrifice and serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for the dignity of all working people.
