[ha-Safran] Electronic galley of Greenhorn
NewSouth has asked that I share with this group its offer to send any interested AJL librarian an electronic galley of Greenhorn, my illustrated novel for young readers that NewSouth published in December about a young Holocaust survivor who arrives at a Brooklyn yeshiva in the 1940s with only a small box that he won't let out of his sight. Greenhorn is a tough story, but NewSouth believes the book has much to say both to young readers and to the adult community, and has made a free Discussion Guide for families and a Classroom Guide for teachers available from its website www.newsouthbooks.com/greenhorn. The Discussion Guide is based on questions created by Marcia Weiss Posner, Ph.D., librarian and program director at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, New York. Before the book was delayed at the printer in Asia, and again in a New Jersey warehouse after Hurricane Sandy, I had written a Soapbox Essay about how Greenhorn came to be written and published, which appeared in Publishers Weekly: http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/columns-and-blogs/soapbox/article/54136-a-story-of-hope.html And some of you may be interested in a blog interview I recently participated in about changing a fact of the story I heard (Greenhorn is based on a true story), something I struggled with as I wrote the book. http://blogs.timesofisrael.com/greenhorn/ Please email me if you would like an electronic galley (PDF) of Greenhorn. NewSouth hopes that some of you will want to include the book in a display of library resources for Yom Hashoah. Thank you. What a wonderful resource, thank-you.Andrea RappWise Temple, Cincinnati, OH --- On Sat, 1/26/13, Vavi Toran vto...@jewishlearningworks.org wrote: From: Vavi Toran vto...@jewishlearningworks.org Subject: [ha-Safran] Israeli Books in Translation for Children Youth - An annotated List To: hasaf...@lists.osu.edu Cc: Ilan Vitemberg ivitemb...@jewishlearningworks.org, susan levin sgkle...@gmail.com Date: Saturday, January 26, 2013, 10:53 PM Shalom all and Happy Tu Bishvat, We are proud to present Israeli Books in Translation for Children and Youth - An Annotated List. This list marks the second installment in the ambitious project we launched in 2011: creating the Classic Israeli Bookshelf. The goal of the Classic Israeli Bookshelf program is to enable English speaking students and families to access Israeli children literature, thus forming a life-long bond between North American children and families and their peers in Israel, and, by extension, to Israel. Many educators, in both Judaic and General studies, expressed a desire to have access to quality Israeli literature that was translated to English and was published. When we embarked on this project to address that need, we were surprised to find that such a list was not readily available or did not exist. It does now! On behalf of the Israel Education Initiative, Vavi Toran P.S. I want to thank members of Hasafran group for all their interest, help, and suggestions. I would love to get feedback from you! [ha-Safran] A very good picture book on dealing with a grandparent who is dying
In case you have not heard of or read this book, I highly recommend that you read it. I got a copy from the Seattle Public Library. It is called*Zayde Comes to Live * and it is by Sheri Sinykin. The title had a second meaning to me after I read it. This 32-page children's picture book about a very ill grandfather who comes to live with the family of a young girl is truly a wonderful book. It deals with the subject of illness and death directly at the level of a 4 to 6-year-old and is quite poignant but also comforting. The child knows that zayde is dying but is afraid to say anything to her parents. She asks the rabbi when he visits as she knows rabbis never lie. __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.service.ohio-state.edu https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran
