[ha-Safran] e-readers
As promised, here is a summary of the answers I receivedwhen I inquired about the purchasing of e-readers: Purchased Nooks because of the in-store help and training. BN wants to help schools and libraries. The Kindle license may not even allow use for this purpose although many use it anyway. 2. Kindles purchased without a discount. Synagogues and JCCs may be able to receive a grant. In at least one place, this worked out well. 4. The least expensive Kindles are best because the Kindle allows you to share an e-book over 6 readers at no additional cost. In spite of the fact that Kindles were purchased without a discount, the program has been cost effective. Thanks so much to all who responded. I appreciate your help! Michal Michal H. [ha-Safran] In the Beginning There Was the Holocaust (Magnes press)
Hello We would like to introduce a new book published by Magnes press: In the Beginning There Was the Holocaust A Spiritual Journey Back into the Abysses of Jewish History By Moshe Shner http://www.magnes-press.com/Authors/Moshe+Shner.aspx?name=Moshe+Shner The Holocaust is an unsolved problem for humanity. We are still trying to explain the causes and the origins of the hell of Nazi Europe and its impact on our understanding humanity and concept of Western civilization. For Jewish thinkers the problem is even more urgent as it brings forward difficult questions about Jewish identity. The book In the Beginning there was the Holocaust brings a panoramic picture of the responses of Jewish Philosophy to the Holocaust, Theodicy, the meaning of Jewish existence after the Holocaust, struggle with nihilism and despair, and questions concerning Holocaust education and the culture of remembrance. [ha-Safran] And before Honor – Humility (Magnes press)
Hello We would like to introduce a new book published by Magnes press: And before Honor – Humility The ideal of humility in the moral language of the Sages By Richard S. Lewis http://www.magnes-press.com/Authors/Richard+S.+Lewis.aspx?name=Richard+S.+Lewis And before Honor – Humility investigates the moral-spiritual ideal of humility in rabbinic literature, a topic which has until now not been the subject of critical inquiry. Four sugyot (topics of discussion) stand at the center of the inquiry: haughtiness of spirit and lowliness of spirit, the humility of the Holy One blessed is He, humility and irascibility, and the ineluctable tension between the honor of Torah and human dignity. Shmuel Lewis presents a theoretical framework and interpretive approach that fit the unique nature of rabbinic literature and uncover a philosophical layer of thought in texts that have been considered until now merely didactic. His readings tack between close textual investigation and broad conceptual analysis in search of the mutual relations between social conceptions and world pictures. By means of comparison with parallel mutual relations in ancient Greek thought the connections between social conceptions, world pictures and moral ideals comes into view in both moral languages – the biblical-rabbinic and the Greek. Yossi, Daniel Rettberg is very ill. If it would be okay, please post this on HaSafran: Dear AJL friends, please say a mishaberach for Daniel Yohanon Shalom ben Gitl (Daniel Rettberg). I got a message from his wife, Linda Schuster, today. Here is her note: Dan has been fighting leukemia for the past year and is now under hospice care at home. He is comfortable but nearing the end of his earthly journey. My apologies for the late email notice about his health, but life has been very hard these past months. Please feel free to let others know about him. Where there is life there is hope, so we ask for your prayers and good thoughts. Blessings to each of you. Linda Schuster I know that many of you have memories of our favorite rare book librarian from HUC and his love for all Judaica, but especially OLD Judaica. Please pass the word. Thanks. [ha-Safran] Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee
Dear Friends: Three positions on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee will be available beginning January 1, 2014. Applicants should be members of AJL, familiar with the scope of Judaic children’s literature, experienced in writing critical reviews, willing and able to read and review over 120 books during the course of a year, and able to meet deadlines. Committee members are expected to attend annual conventions and to participate in committee-sponsored events, including speaking at the Committee’s annual presentation. The term of membership on the Committee is four years. Each committee member typically receives more than $1,500 in books for review each year, which may be kept for personal use or added to the member’s library. Membership on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee is both fun and intellectually challenging, but it also requires a substantial commitment in terms of time and energy. Members must be able to submit reviews electronically and correspond with other committee members through regular e-mail. Familiarity with Google Docs is helpful but not required. To apply, send a letter indicating the reasons for your interest, a resume, and several examples of your recent reviews of Jewish children’s books to Aimee Lurie, Committee Chair, at ch...@sydneytaylorbookaward.org or aimeelu...@mac.com. Applications will be accepted through November 30, 2013.
