[ha-Safran] Book program idea

2016-07-19 Thread Arlene Ratzabi
Hello
I would like to know if any of you have heard of or used the book and puppet
package entitled "The Gelt Giving Golem" for your libraries or schools? Have
you invited the author to your school or synagogue? It utilizes the character
of the golem from Prague to reward good deeds during Hanukkah.

I would appreciate any and all feedback.

Thanks very much and continue to enjoy your summer!

[ha-Safran] Need help with a bibliographic citation

2016-07-19 Thread Joseph Galron-Goldschlaeger
Colleagues,
I need some help in locating an article by Prof. Moshe Pelli on a book
of/on Elie Wiesel.
The title of the article is: "Elie Wiesel: The Right to Question" and it
was published in the *Melbourne Chronicle* (Australia) in March-April *1978
or 1979*, pages 12-15.

I have only a citation that says 1979, but there is another article by
Prof. Moshe Pelli that was published in Hebrew in the Hebrew periodical
*Bitzaron* (New York) that was published in March-April 1978 on Elie Wiesel.
I will apreciate any help in finding an answer.

Yossi

[ha-Safran] Legal Thinking in the Lithuanian Yeshivoth

2016-07-19 Thread Celestina Levant
Hello,
We would like to introduce a new title published by The Hebrew University
Magnes Press:
Legal Thinking in the Lithuanian Yeshivoth
The Heritage and Works of Rabbi Shimon Shkop
By Shai
Wozner

An intellectual revolution took place in the Lithuanian Yeshivoth in the last
quarter of the nineteenth century: a new study method took yeshiva students by
storm. The new method focused on the study of the legal field in Talmud, it
raised new questions which have not been asked before and developed a
sophisticated analytical legal thinking, which dealt with the analysis and
definition of norms and legal-halachic concepts in Talmudic literature. All
this turned the Yeshivoth into Talmudic law colleges.

The book lists characteristics of the new study method through the teachings of
Rabbi Shimon Shkop (1859-1939), one of the most original and influential rabbis
in the Lithuanian Yeshiva world. For over fifty years Shkop taught the new
study method he developed and the legal Fundamentals that explain the way
Talmudic law worked, to a great many students in the Yeshivoth of Telšiai
,Malech, Brańsk and Grodno.

The book examines key characteristics in the legal thought and theory of Rabbi
Shimon Shkop and traces the similarities and differences between the legal
thought of Yeshivoth as opposed to the West. It integrates issues of law,
justice and culture, the history of Israel in modern times, history of ideas,
philosophy of Halacha and Talmud study.
