Re: [ha-Safran] Is your synagogue library open on Shabbat?

2016-08-02 Thread Larry Yudelson
At my former medium-sized Conservative shul, there was a index card box
with cards for every member family. When checking out books on Shabbat, you
would take your family's card and clip it to the book cards. After Shabbat
the librarian would ender the check-outs into the computer system.

Re: [ha-Safran] Is your synagogue library open on Shabbat?

2016-08-02 Thread Joshua Jasper
Hi all,

My synagogue library is open on Shabbat, but it is not staffed by a
librarian on the weekends. We're a medium-sized library in a large
Conservative synagogue. I was just hired a month ago, and the interim
librarian began this experiment about a month before I began. It is very
much still a work-in-progress.

The library gets heavy traffic during the weekend, since the library is
open (either officially or unofficially) whenever someone is in the
building and the weekend is when most congregants are around (especially in
the summer). We do not have any public computers, our catalog is online,
and we use the old card-in-book method for check-outs. Books, especially
fiction and children's, were already getting heavy usage within the room on
Shabbat and so my predecessor thought that a Shabbat check-out system would
be very popular.

We already have a sign explaining how to do a weekday check-out. Now we
have a similar sign to put out explaining the special process for Shabbat.
The patron is supposed to take the card out and leave it in the usual place
(within a small box), but not write on it. There is a special "check-out
card" to put inside the book. The card says "Please call or e-mail the
library after Shabbat with the name of your book and your name, so that we
can fill out the card and keep track of our books."

This experiment has had mixed success and it is a work-in-progress. Many
more books are now being checked out of the library, but no one is taking
the special Shabbat cards or contacting the library after Shabbat. I am
hesitantly hopeful that we can get the kinks fixed in this plan before
holiday season begins in October, but I would love to hear suggestions from
the group with ideas to improve the process.

Hello everyone,
I'm looking for Jewish novels or general non-fiction books by debut authors,
or those who are close to the beginning of their writing careers. Particularly
ones that you think have a promising career ahead of them. The kind of books
you might recommend to a book club.

I've consulted the debut fiction award for the past several years of the
National Jewish Book Award- and am looking for additional titles.

Thank you for your help!

[ha-Safran] FW: THE WAY OF MAN (MARTIN BUBER) - a worthy addition to your Film Collection

2016-08-02 Thread Ruth

THE WAY OF MAN- A FILM ABOUT MARTIN BUBER

What motivates young people in the 21st century to live their lives inspired by
a philosopher born in the 19th century? Why do they see him as a spiritual
guide?

In this lively documentary, we learn that his philosophy is alive and well. Not
simply a historical biography of a leading giant in the field of philosophy,
this film shows how Martin Buber is more relevant and timely than ever.

Already purchased by the libraries at Pennsylvania, Arizona State and Duke
Universities, this film is a must for students and scholars of philosophy in
particular and the 20th Century in general.

You can read more about this film at

http://www.ruthfilms.com/the-way-of-man-a-film-about-martin-buber.html

or contact us at r...@ruthfilms.com

Purchase price for university libraries is $300 + shipping and handling and
$115 + shipping and handling for public libraries.

Using Buber’s discourse, individuals of the Facebook generation are finding
practical answers to the existential questions that occupy them: the search for
spirituality and enlightened living, listening to the other, creating dialogue
that moves beyond the political backdrop, and engaging with the other as a
precondition to being a whole person.

Looking forward to receiving your order,

Best regards,

Ruth Diskin

Ruth
