Re: [ha-Safran] Questions for Jewish Librarians

2017-01-05 Thread Aileen Grossberg
It would be a wonderful accomplishment and help mightily when weeding older
books from small libraries like mine. I am often hesitant about discarding
older books which no longer have a place both in use, interest, or physical
self space in my library but I would keep for historic reasons if they appeared
to be last copies.

I had a similar idea about creating a database of Jewish resources way back in
1980, when I was AJL President. I invited colleagues from academic/archival
libraries, synagogue/school/center libraries, Bureau of Jewish Education
directors, Jewish publishers, and others. We called the committee, “Creation
of National Jewish Bibliographic Data Base.” We discussed it for quite awhile
via the U.S. mail. (We didn’t have the luxury of the Internet or emails
then!). We met at national conventions and once even in my Library in Los
Angeles. It was of great interest. I remember that we reached the point of
discussing potential funding sources!

BUT, then, the 1982 Lebanon War occurred, and all funding priorities were for
Israel's defenses, of course, and none for future resources. I think I may
still have the correspondence hard copies - but doubt that it would be of much
use from 34 years ago.

I don’t recall hearing anything more about this idea, but I’m long retired from
the AJL Board.

I like to keep current - thus my joining this ha-Safran discussion. I still
think it's a very very worthwhile project and, with today’s technology, it
seems very doable.

Best of luck to you.

Barbara

anyone can share their thoughts:

I wanted to know if

1. there is a website which combines all digital catalogues from Jewish
libraries around the world, which would allow complex searches, such as "show
me all books on Theodore Herzl's childhood within a 50 mile radius of Los
Angeles"

2. Would Jewish librarians want such a site constructed if not available?

Re: [ha-Safran] Questions for Jewish Librarians

2017-01-05 Thread ted
There are two realistic ways of doing this sort of thing.Note: this is
what I do for a living – library automation – so I think I’m qualified to reply.

a.. Creating a physical Union catalog – that is, collecting the MARC records
and holdings information, loading them into a single database, indexing them
and then applying geographical limits to searches. This is what OCLC does in
WorldCat, and to a lesser degree what certain statewide Union Catalogs – for
example, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Michigan, and Wisconsin – do to make
all library holdings in the state available.

The main issue with this approach is upkeep and maintenance. Each of
the individual libraries that is in the Union Catalog needs to output their
records periodically (monthly, quarterly) and upload them to the host, and the
host needs to load and index them. This means that the database
being viewed is always a month or more out-of-date.

a..The second approach (virtual union catalog) is through the use of
Z39.50 (remote searching). A local library needs to have a Z39.50 client
capable of searching remote libraries that host Z39.50 servers. With Z39.50,
you’re searching the real, live-up to the minute holdings of the remote
library. You want to look for a book on Herzl that the library bought
yesterday, and it shows up.

There are a couple of downsides to this approach:
- you or your system needs to have a Z39.50 client
- the targets you want to search need to support Z39.50 servers
– not all do, particularly smaller ones
- Unless your system does federated searching (i.e. being able
to broadcast a Z39.30 search to multiple Z39.50 servers at the same time), then
you’ll be searching catalogs one-by-one

So all the tools exist today. Both take work.

[ha-Safran] Weine call number suggestions, please

2017-01-05 Thread Amy Turim
Just received a book I’d ordered by Todd Parr, who writes so well for young
children, addressing issues and feelings with empathy and gentle
self-empowerment. These are not overtly Jewish books, but I’m glad to
include them in my synagogue library.

The two I already have are easily catalogued under Grief and Mourning, but
I’m stuck on *THE I’M NOT SCARED BOOK*, and hope someone else has been down
this road and can help me out!

Thanks very much –

It sounds to me like they're looking for a version of Worldcat tailored to
Jewish libraries. What do they mean by Jewish library? Do they mean
libraries in Jewish institutions? Institutions containing Judaica? More
clarification would help.
