[ha-Safran] Conference Evaluation form

2017-07-03 Thread Shirazi, Gail
Was an evaluation form sent for the NY conference? With the discussion on
Hasafran about how and what we can do to keep libraries and our organization
alive, the form will give an opportunity for people to put forward some new
ideas for next year.

One comment I have now---we should work very hard next year to do outreach and
involve the public (Sunday programs, open sessions to a number of students,
more outside participants as volunteers and speakers etc). We should not miss
the opportunity at the Boston conference.

Thanks again to everyone who worked so hard on this year's conference.

Gail

[ha-Safran] Brookly Jewish Historical Society--: Biegeleisen Books-Oral History

2017-07-03 Thread Shirazi, Gail
Dear Tina, That would be great. They would send out a professional trained to
take interviews and they are in the "area". People would logically go there to
research bookdealers in Brooklyn. Maybe they would even give copies to other
institutions. GREAT idea. Thanks for following up with this. Gail

I've mentioned it also to the Brooklyn Jewish Historical Initiative (BJHI) -
http://brooklynjewish.org/ and they also seem interested in working on a
project and possibly having a speakers' event to go along with it.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Biegeleisen Books-Oral History

While in NY, Galina and I visited Biegeleisen Books in Brooklyn. We had the
chance to meet Aaron Biegeleisen (the nephew) and Mr. Biegeleisen (the
senior-who just celebrated his 90th birthday). We enjoyed listening to the
stories he told about how his grandfather came to this country and set up the
business in the early 1900s. They even have a file of letters, invoices and
other ephemera dealing with the store that dates back to the "early days". It
would be wonderful if someone in NY could take senior Biegeleisen's oral
history and video it. The firm has been such a part of the Judaica book scene,
it would be a shame to miss this opportunity. We did mention to both of the
Biegeleisens that it would be a wonderful thing to have done.

I'm am hoping someone will like the idea and do it. Maybe the NY Jewish
Historical Society or some other organization-even a senior high school
project. It would be wonderful to have.

Just a thought-Gail

2017-07-03 Thread Michelle Chesner
Dear Safranim,

I'm pleased to announce the website for Codex Conquest: Jewish Edition:

All of the game components are currently downloadable from the site for use
under a CC-BY 4.0 license.

Note that the cards that are currently there are subject to change, and the
game itself should be considered in "beta."

If anyone is interested in using it in the classroom for teaching Jewish
book history, please let me know - I would love to discuss this with you.

My best,
Michelle

[ha-Safran] The Legal Status of the Mother in the Ancient Near East and the Bible

2017-07-03 Thread Celestina Levant
Hello,
We would like to introduce a new publication by The Hebrew University Magnes
press.
The Legal Status of the Mother in the
Ancient Near East and the Bible
By Lea
Jacobsen

Mesopotamian and biblical societies in antiquity were characterized by their
patriarchal structure. The father was head of the family unit, and his rule
extended over many areas of life. He had broad legal authority over the members
of his household, including his offspring. It is therefore expected that in the
ancient sources a dominant father figure would be mentioned alone or almost
alone. And yet, in Mesopotamian and biblical texts, particularly legal
writings, the exclusivity of the father is not always explicit. In many of the
Mesopotamian and biblical writings, especially legal texts, the mother is
mentioned in various contexts and in a range of realms, mainly those pertaining
to her offspring. This intriguing phenomenon raised the question whether the
mother in the ancient Near East and ancient Israel had legal authority in the
household.
The book The Legal Status of the Mother in the Ancient Near East and the Bible
sheds light on the world of the ancient mothers and their status within the
households and the societies in which they lived. This study demonstrates that
the mother acted by virtue of the legal status she possessed in matters related
to her sons and daughters' marriages and their behavior towards her.
This book is for those walking in the fields of Mesopotamian and biblical
research, and for readers interested in the universal subject in question - the
relations between the mother and her offspring.
