Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish texts disposal

2018-04-12 Thread Devorah Bader
Thanks. I know they need to go in a genizah but our local shul can not
handle 100's of books at once. I was hoping there might be a larger group
that can help. The only cemetary I found so far is about a two hour drive
away and I'm not sure they will take so many either.

Devorah:

The books must be interred in a geniza. I recommend that you contact a local
orthodox synagogue and local cemeteries to see if they have geniza space.

[ha-Safran] price reduced on after-conference Amherst trip

2018-04-12 Thread Lisa Silverman
Hi all,
I am attaching the latest itinerary for the after-conference Amherst trip,
which has now been reduced by $25 because I contracted with a different bus
company for transportation. There is also a new option not listed there-- to
pay for one-way transportation in case you want to join us but are not planning
to return to Boston. We will also offer an end stop at the airport for those
going back Thursday night.
The cost for one way will be $65.00. There are only 6 more spots available on
the bus, so let me know if you would like to come!

[ha-Safran] Classifying a unique Judaica book

2018-04-12 Thread Joshua Jasper
Hi colleagues,

I recently purchased a very interesting Judaica book for my library
called *Einstein
and the Rabbi: Searching for the Soul
*
by
Naomi Levy.

At first glance it seemed to be about Albert Einstein, at second glance it
seemed about Rabbi Naomi Levy's personal reflections based on a letter by
Albert Einstein, and now it just seems like general Jewish inspiration by
Naomi Levi but I'm really not quite sure. It still seems great for my
library, but I have no idea how to classify it.

Interestingly, the Library of Congress (see for yourself in the link above)
classifies it as QC (general physics or science) in LCC but 296.7 (Judaism)
in Dewey. I find these decisions by LoC interesting but unhelpful, as I am
looking for its subject matter for the purposes of putting it into the
Elazar system. To summarize, I don't understand it's subject well enough to
give it an Elazar number. Biography? Kabbalah? Science from a Jewish
perspective?

Any thoughts or suggestions? It's been bothering me for over a week in the
way that only happens to librarians.

Thanks, and Shabbat Shalom,

Josh Jasper
