[ha-Safran] Jewish Genealogy Workshop

This is from the Library of Virginia. I don't have any more information about
it, but saw it on the Viriginia Library Association listserv and thought it
would be of interest to this group.

Even the most avid students of Jewish genealogy find that the thousands of
databases, books, and websites devoted to the subject can make their quest for
information a daunting one. What you really need is a knowledgeable guide and
some practical tips and strategies.

Karen S. Franklin is ready to provide them as she outlines the process to
successfully explore general family history websites such as
Ancestry.com, as well as online sites exclusive to Jewish genealogy such as
JewishGen.org, and, of course, local archives and libraries. Franklin will feature a
Richmond Jewish family as she demonstrates how to use these tools. Contact
Ashley Ramey at
ashley.ra...@lva.virginia.gov or
804.692.3001 for more information.

Re: [ha-Safran] For synagogue librarians--amount of donations confidential?

2021-04-16 Thread Robin Zeitz via Hasafran
Judy,

At our small library, we have a small annual budget -- used to purchase
library-specific supplies, software and tech support. We present an annual
request to our Finance Committee during our budgeting cycle. More major
expenses, e.g. computers, come from a different fund, but we need to
request it during the budgeting cycle. Any funds not expended return to the
synagogue's coffers.

We also have a Library Books Fund -- used to purchase books and library
resources. Funds for the Library Books Fund come from donations and we
know who the donors are and the amount, unless they ask to be anonymous. We
can use these funds whenever we choose to, and when there are funds
available. We periodically remind people to donate to the Library Books
Fund, but don't do a major appeal.

Re: [ha-Safran] For synagogue librarians--amount of donations confidential?

2021-04-16 Thread Daniel Stuhlman via Hasafran
Greetings Judy:

Clearly your executive director is not understanding the nature and
psychology of fundraising and donations. Part of the reason we announce
donations is for the competition. Donors think "If my friend Y gives that
much, I'll give more." Donation amounts are routinely published in
Federation newsletters, organizational newsletters, and congregational
newsletters. People like the honor of being able to see their name. A
donor may request anonymity, but most don't. Every Shabbat morning when
people are called up to the Torah and we make a mi-shebarah we announce the
amount unless the person requests not to. Some congregations auction
honors. This is competitive and brings in a lot of donations for the
congregation.

Personally, I think announcing the amounts divides people into the "have"
and "have-nots." However, my opinion is in the minority and I keep this
opinion to myself..

On the practical side, if the library puts book plates to honor the donor,
then the library could have a rule such as "Every $20 entitles the donor to
one bookplate, unless the book is of higher value." Sometimes families use
a book donation for a centerpiece at a bar or bat mitzvah celebration. The
celebrant works with the librarian for the selection of the books.

I hope this helps,

Shabbat shalom

[ha-Safran] Revised Blog-- Heroes of Learning

2021-04-16 Thread Daniel Stuhlman via Hasafran
In 2000 I wrote a series of blogs on heroes of learning. I have been updating
and revising these articles while retaining the spirit of the original. In
November 2000 I wrote about Rabbi Shmuel Jablon. Now he is the executive
director of Shappell's in Jerusalem. After some exchanges of e-mail and text
messages I updated what I wrote about him. As a connection to Yo Ha'atzmaut I
publish the revised version in my blog Kol Safran.

Re: [ha-Safran] For synagogue librarians--amount of donations confidential?

2021-04-16 Thread Barbara Leff via Hasafran
When I was Library Director, all donations were in addition to the Library
budget, to be spent as and when the Director deemed best. This worked very
well. It allowed for extra-special needs of the Library. If donors allowed
it, we would publish their names in Ha-Safran.

[ha-Safran] For synagogue librarians--amount of donations confidential?

2021-04-16 Thread Judy Petersen via Hasafran
Hi,     My synagogue has a new Executive Director.  She is very supportive of
the Library and wants to professionalize the synagogue's systems, which is
great, but we're butting heads on one particular issue.     Currently, when I
receive a donation to the library, I'm told the name of the person and the
amount.  Since I don't have a budget, I use these donations to purchase books,
usually for the children's library, and I book plate the books that I purchase
with the name of the donor.  If I don't know the amount, I don't know how many
books to purchase.     My executive director proposes to give me a budget
(YAY!) that would include book purchases (YAY again!).  However, she feels the
amount of any donations to the Library going forward should be confidential and
should be used to offset my allotted budget. My feeling is that I should
continue to have the authority to spend any donations over and above my budget
how I wish, that donations directed to the Library shouldn't be used to offset
the budget, and that the amount (usually in the neighborhood of $18-$60) does
not need to be confidential.      I have my monthly meeting with her next
Tuesday.  It would be great if some synagogue librarians could weigh and let me
know how the question of confidentiality of donations is handled at your
synagogue.     Many thanks,
                Judy Petersen                Library Director
