[ha-Safran] Jewish Placemaking Training and Teaching - a Survey by COST Dynamics of Placemaking

2023-10-24 Thread Dov Winer via Hasafran
Dear colleagues,

Fonrobert (2009) identified what she called a new spatial turn in Jewish
Studies producing
a "veritable boom ... of projects that investigate questions of place and
space". Diana Pinto
and Joachim Schlör are among those who pioneered this trend already in the
late nineties.
Many recent conferences and publications on Jewish Spaces testify that this
is an ongoing
vigorous trend.
We have now an opportunity to map how teaching and training programs
focused on
Jewish Placemaking are being carried out.

The COST Action Dynamics of Placemaking
 seeks to increase knowledge on
experiences
of placemaking training and teaching.

This COST Action is an initiative of the late Eszter Gantner Z"L. She
edited the thematic issue
of the Anthropological Journal of European Cultures on: "Jewish Space
Reloaded!"

The results of the survey will be made available at the site of the action:

Results *pertaining to Jewish Placemaking will be posted here.*

We expect entries coming worldwide and in any language. Readily available
translation
tools now enable an inclusive approach.

Conceptually, the scope is also broad. It is *not restricted* to
placemaking based on urban
planning approaches. This thread, founded by William H. Whyte in the 1960s,
has been
thriving since then, and continues with creative innovations.

Other approaches to teaching placemaking also are welcome. Examples may
include:

Courses stemming from Pierre Nora's concept of "Lieux de mémoire". Any
significant entity,
which by dint of human will or the work of time has become a symbolic
element of the
memorial heritage of a community. Cultural landmarks, places, practices,
and expressions
from a shared past.

Teaching placemaking that involves the concept of social production of
space as conceived
by Henri Lefebvre. Space produced and constructed socially and as a set of
human relations.
This conception became an agenda for a sociology of space and feeds
agonistic political
developments related to placemaking.

[ha-Safran] International Online Conference #DHJewish - Jewish Studies in the Digital Age

2020-12-30 Thread Dov Winer via Hasafran
International Online Conference #DHJewish - Jewish Studies in the Digital
Age

by Gerben Zaagsma

In all humanities disciplines, scholars find themselves confronted with the
rapidly increasing availability of digital resources (data), new
technologies to interrogate and analyze them (tools), and the question of
how to engage with these developments. The digitisation boom of the last
two decades, and the rapid advancement of digital tools to analyse data in
myriad ways, have opened up new avenues for humanities research. The field
of Jewish Studies is no exception. How can these digital developments be
harnessed to address specific questions and problems in our field? And what
is the current state of the art?

To probe these questions, the international conference *#DHJewish - Jewish
Studies in the Digital Age* will bring together more than 60 scholars and
heritage practitioners to discuss how the digital turn affects the field of
Jewish Studies.

The conference will take place online through the Morressier virtual
academic conference platform; please find *our conference page here

*(currently
under construction). More details on how to register and attend will be
posted on our conference page, and in this news announcement, soon.

The *preliminary conference program can also be downloaded here

The conference is part of a bigger project which includes an online
portal, currently under development at the C²DH, which will offer a variety
of different types of information on the intersection of Jewish Studies &
Digital Humanities, including a news and events section, a registry of
projects, blogs & forums, as well as a Zotero bibliography.

The conference and website are made possible thanks to a Digital Humanities

The role of digital/online resources in the Jewish Diaspora communities
*Dov Winer*

Abstract
Globalization, in its earlier stages, was expected to erode national and
ethnic identities. In contrast, ethnicity and
ethnic affiliations persisted, growing socially and politically. This paper
examines the role of the globalizing new
communications technologies on this process, focusing on Diasporas. The
study of trans-state networks based
on ethnic solidarity, connections and affinities in the framework of social
and political science is quite recent.
Following a clarification of the distinction between classical and modern
Diasporas we analyse a particular case
study, that of the Jewish Diaspora. This diaspora was an early adopter of
computer-based communications
and the Internet for a wide range of purposes. Early events are described
including the diffusion of the Internet
to Israel, the planning of a Global Jewish Information Network, Israel 2020
macro scenarios for Israel and
the Jewish People and the decision on Jewish Peoplehood through
communication technologies. A survey of
historical systems (Responsa, BBS, and Usenet) is followed by a description
of the Jewish population and the
wide variety of Jewish Web based activities today. These include the
Institutional landscape; Jewish media —
press, radio, video and blogs; the impact on Jewish religious observance;
Jewish genealogy; Online dating;
Social networks; Jewish education; Online learning; Jewish Studies and
Digital Humanities; Jewish memory.
Judaica Europeana supports the activities previously described by
aggregating and facilitating the access
and the re-use of Jewish digital culture. Europeana is the leading global
digital library for cultural heritage
as well as a lively eco-system for relevant stakeholders.

[ha-Safran] EVA/Minerva Brazil International Conference on Advanced Technologies for Culture 14-15 May 2019, São Paulo, Brazil

This conference is part of the EVA Conference International
network and organized as a joint
initiative with the EVA/Minerva Jerusalem Conference
.
The partners producing the conference are UNESP (University of the State of

https://tinyurl.com/poster-BR

*Purpose*

Cultural Heritage is a key element to promote socio-economic development,
but its full potential –as an engine for innovation and growth,
remains unfulfilled. To bridge this gap there is need to address the
complex links between traditional cultural assets and policies
(cultural heritage, dynamic cultural institutions and services) and the
opportunities provided by new demands and societal needs. This
implies involving actors that work in the cultural heritage field with
those developing and implementing advanced technologies attuned
to the new civilization. Such civilization has evolved due to the impact on
society of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies)
in its various guises - the New Media, the Internet, the Web, mobile
services and the IoT (Internet of Things).

The conference will be a meeting of the relevant professional communities
from Brazil and from abroad enabling exchange of experiences,
mutual learning and to build joint projects. This initiative is in synergy
with the increased cooperation between the European Union and
Brazil. The co-financing arrangements for RTD were extended in May 2018 to
the whole country while previously they were available
only in eight states.

Re: [ha-Safran] Announcing the launch of the website Jewish Digital Collections

2018-11-27 Thread Dov Winer via Hasafran
Dear Dianne,

Chapeau! This is a very helpful resource and very well done.

The challenge for our community now is to aggregate as much as
possible these digital libraries. This can be carried out both in
Europeana as well as at the Digital Public Library of
America .

In this context I am happy to tell you that Judaica Europeana II has just
been approved by the European Commission and should begin in
early 2019. The resource you have developed will expand our
catching net for additional of Jewish Cultural Heritage digital libraries
to be aggregated to Europeana. A Culture Chatbot is also coming
soon...

Best regards,
Dov
