This was the email contact as of January.

It is not cheap. I think it was about $6000 a year for libraries for the

Good luck

Dear All,

I would like to ask you for your advice. We at the University of Illinois have
been trying to have online access to Ha'aretz newspaper, but the newspaper is
not responsive to library request. I think they reply only to the individual
request. Can anyone advise us what to do especially we want the newspaper for
a Hebrew teaching course and also for the literature course?

Please advice us with a contact person or any suggestion.

[ha-Safran] Book on search for Jewish roots in Ukraine by an Emeritus professor at UCLA

Searching for Butsnevits by Jack Rothman

"This is a story of discovery. Like many kids in immigrant families, I avoided
dealing with "old country" family history--and like many of us, I was later
moved to go on a quest to discover my roots. This book, Searching for
Butsnevits: A Shtetl Tale, is part autobiography, part social history, and part
detective story--where the search is for a missing community rather than a
missing person.

The book is an encounter with the past, with the history of my family in
Ukraine in the early 1900s, and includes information about Jewish life in the
area and what's happened since to the place and the people, as well as a rare
firsthand account of the flight of my family from Ukraine in 1920 in the wake
of the pogroms that swept the country following the Russian Revolution"

[ha-Safran] another Moroccan Jewish book

thanks!
David

Description
Titles: La jeune prostituée aveugle (The Young Blind Prostitute)
Des enfants, des trains (Children and Trains)
Two books in one.
Author: Nessim Sibony
Language: French.
Year: 2016.
Format: 6” x 9”
Cover glossy with one color illustration.
Paperback.
ISBN 978-0-9909426-1-0
Publisher: J.T. Productions

Content
First book
La jeune prostituée aveugle
The author undertakes a trip to Meron to prepare a synopsis for a documentary
film on the procession of the Sefer Torah from Safed to Meron for the Hilloula
of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochay and finds himself engulfed in memories of his
childhood in Marrakech, among them those of a young blind prostitute. By her
fate she becomes for him the symbol of the social condition imposed on the
Jewish Moroccan community in Israel, their legendary discrimination and
exploitation.

The book reinforces the struggle and triumph of those who never surrendered in
despair, like that young prostitute, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and Jewish
communities.

Second book
Des enfants, des trains (Children and trains) in French language. Scenario poem
built to reveal the horrible fate of the Jewish children during the Holocaust,
which has to be remembered. Forgetting it is treason. It is composed out of the
experiences told, described, filmed and revealed to the author during his life
in Paris, Israel, and the U.S.A.

[ha-Safran] Book by Moroccan Jewish author

Dear safranim:

A local Moroccan Jewish author here in Los Angeles asked me to post this.
please write directly to him and not to me.

Description

Title : The Art of Nessim Sibony
Paintings and Posters
Language: English, with certain titles in French and Hebrew.
Author: Nessim Sibony
Year: 2016.
Paperback.
146 pages.
Dimensions: 21 cm.1/2 x 28cm. (8.5’’ x 11’’).
ISBN 978-1-4951-9576-1
Works included: 35 paintings, 19 posters, 27 smaller paintings and posters, 6
Jewish lifecycle documents, 5 black and white serigraphs reproductions.
Paintings and posters are related to major themes of our time especially Jewish
life of the artist in Morocco, the Holocaust, Jerusalem and some consideration
of our relation to the cosmos. The posters enhance socio- political
observations by the artist in France, Israel and the U.S.A.

This book will serve as a testimony available to all who are interested in our
generation’s concerns, and who are committed to the ideas and the history of
our very grueling 20th century. These works will preserve by brush and pen the
expression of our existence. They will live on bookshelves, since they cannot
remain up on public walls forever. I create art, in part, to shake our
consciences. As an American art critic wrote about my work, “He dares to show
what many of us continue to live in silence.”
Price: U.S. $50.00. Shipment in the U.S.A: $3.00

The following book is available to US libraries with Jewish or Iranian studies

David

Massood Haroonian’s Book

Complete name in English and Farsi:
Report of a Quarter Century of Cultural, Social and Educational Services of
Iranian Jewish Cultural Organization of California
Date of Publication: May 2005
Publisher: Iranian Jewish Cultural Organization of California
Editor: Massood Haroonian
Number of pages: 1,015

This is a historic reference source documenting the activities of the first
nonprofit Iranian Jewish organization established in California. The book
illustrates the cultural, social and educational activities of members of
Iranian Jewish community who after 2,500 years left Iran and immigrated to
Southern California beginning with 1970's. The book sets forth the efforts by
some of the leaders of this small ancient community in preserving its unique
cultural identity and traditions. The organization was able to raise
substantial funds to assist many needy people and funded scholarships and
contributed to other Jewish organizations worldwide. Soon after its inception
the organization collaborated with the late Professor Amon Netzer zl’ with
regards to funding research in Judeo-Iranian studies. After his passing the
organization contributed a major portion of its funds to establish a center at
Hebrew University in Professor’s Netzer’s honor.

The book contains biographies of numerous of well known Iranian Jewish leaders,
as well as reports of cultural events, educational seminars, text of speeches
and honorariums held during years 1979 to 2004.

The Editor, the late Massood Haroonian was a respected leader of the Iranian
Jewish community. Prior to immigrating to U.S. he had a life long history of
service in Iran. Among others he was member of Tehran Central Jewish Committee,
head of Jewish Arbitration Committee, head of Safir Hospital, a Jewish
nonprofit hospital in Tehran. He was elected President of Iranian Chapter of
Rotary Club in Los Angeles. Massood Haroonian graduated with degree in Law from
Tehran University and had full command of several languages. He was a
philanthropist and expert in fine Persian carpets. For many years the he
collaborated with Professor Amnon Netzer in coordinating the activities of the
organization. In 2004 Massood Haroonian published another volume containing 1.
Series of biographies of renowned Iranian Jews in offering scientific,
literary, cultural, economic and art services, 2. Series of social, critical
and admonitory articles.

in the Yom Kippur War. I have read that they sent about 1500 troops to assist
the Syrians but that's about all.

Any references in any language would be appreciated.

Many thanks!

[ha-Safran] suggestions for a publisher?

2016-07-06 Thread Hirsch, David
One of our Emeritus faculty members has written a narrative about the search
for his roots in the Ukraine. It reads very nicely actually. He would like to
publish it and I was wondering if any of you had suggestions for possible
publishers.

Many thanks in advance.

Jerusalem in the 50s and 60s.

Do you know where I can get any in Israel--or in the US? The group is Reform

[ha-Safran] New film on Ladino

2015-02-03 Thread Hirsch, David

Saved by Language (2014) is a 53-minute documentary that explores the life
story of Moris Albahari, a Sephardic Jew raised in Sarajevo, Bosnia, who used
his maternal language, Ladino, to help him survive the Holocaust. Moris
reunites with the remaining three speakers of Ladino in Sarajevo and interacts
in a language that he associates with both joyous and painful memories. With
Sephardic and Bosnian music and images of Sarajevo, the viewer is transported
to the previous and current realities of Sephardic life in Bosnia.

Institutions may select to acquire the educational package of the film which
allows for the film to be utilized in classrooms or for personal viewing. Other
options universities may be interested in are scheduled screenings of the film,
and/or post-screening discussion or topic lectures by one or both of the
co-directors. We encourage co-sponsorship among centers given the
interdisciplinary scope of the film (i.e. Center for Jewish Studies, Center for
Near Eastern Studies, etc.). Aside from choosing between subtitles in English,
Spanish, or Bosnian, you may also select subtitles in Ladino, thus allowing
your audience to draw parallels between Ladino and Spanish.

Our film is sure to spark dynamic conversation about the role of language in
shaping one’s cultural heritage and their overall identity. Saved by Language
contextualizes
Ladino as both a Jewish language and a Romance language—a language that
developed in unique ways during the diaspora of the Sephardim from the Iberian
Peninsula. Such a topic is relevant today given Spain and Portugal’s recent
modifications to their “Law of Return,” welcoming the Sephardim to return to
the land of their ancestors, and thus creating greater interest in Sephardic
culture and the Ladino language. Our film aims to enrich such conversations and
debate.

[ha-Safran] new Judaica title from Poland

2014-09-19 Thread Hirsch, David
A new book by an old friend of mine...
Best,
David

Lucky Jews: Poland’s Jewish figurines (Na szczęście to Żyd: Polskie figurki
Żydów)

Erica Lehrer

In Poland today, “Lucky Jews” outnumber Polish Jews. Figurines and images of
Jews holding money have proliferated in Poland with the country’s transition is
capitalism. These good luck charms hang in homes and sit by cash registers in
shops and restaurants across the country. Are these images positive or
negative? Do they divide Poles and Jews or bind them together? Are they
souvenirs, talismans, toys? Holocaust ghosts or patron saints of Polish
capitalism? By exploring what Jewish figurines mean to those who make and buy
them, Lucky Jews offers a provocative perspective on the place of Jews in
Polish consciousness.

Erica Lehrer is an American cultural anthropologist and curator. She is the
author of Jewish Poland Revisited: Heritage Tourism in Unquiet Places (2013).
She teaches at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.

Bilingual Polish-English exhibition catalog, images scholarly essays.

Dear friends:

Everything in life has a beginning and an end. I started working as a volunteer
for the Library of the Seminario in 1989, with BA Irene Münster.
In 2014 I´m leaving after having served truthfully and enjoyed my tasks in this
wonderful library founded by Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer Z”L, and Dra. Suse Harf
Z”L.
I have looked after and protected this library as a real treasure.

25 years of devotion to books, students, teachers and rabbis.
25 years of uninterrupted joy, achievements and satisfactions.

I feel privileged for having been able to do what I like best and in a great
place where I felt protected, loved and recognized, both locally and
internationally.
I have received so many emails, phone calls and letters with expressions of
love and affection that I came to believe that my work here was not too bad.
It's now time to reap what I have sown for 25 years.

I thank all of those who have been and are my friends, all those that I saw
become rabbis, morim and chazzanim, those who have spent hours and hours
studying within this wonderful environment that is the Library of the Seminario.

I want to thank as well all my colleagues from abroad with whom I shared
several conferences and became dear friends,

To all of you THANK YOU VERY MUCH

year's David H. Partington Award. The award was presented during MELA's annual
meeting, held this month at Loyola University New Orleans.

The David H. Partington Award was established to recognize members of MELA who
have displayed a high standard of excellence, with accomplishments in the field
of Middle East librarianship, librarianship in general, and scholarship; and
who have given outstanding service to the association.

Dr. Biella recently retired from her position at the Library of Congress after
a long and remarkable career spanning close to 40 years as a cataloger of
non-Roman-script library materials, in particular Judaica and Hebraica and
Arabic materials. After earning her PhD in Near Eastern Languages and
Civilizations at Harvard University, Joan went on to work at the libraries of
the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem, Princeton
University, and the University of Chicago, before joining the Library of
Congress.

In the course of her long career Joan has been an active member of MELA and has
given diligent and outstanding service to the association and to the profession
at large. She served as President of MELA in 2007-2008 and also took part in
the work of MELA committees, in particular on the Committee on Cataloging,
where she served as the ex-officio representative of the Library of Congress.
According to her colleagues, Joan's vision and insightful advice, her
contributions to the Committee's discussions and decisions, as well as her hard
work, including presentations at many MELA meetings and workshops, have left an
enduring mark on the Cataloging Committee's achievements and on the field of
Middle East librarianship.

It was Joan who initiated the process of what grew to become the Arabic NACO
Manual, an indispensable tool for catalogers. Following the introduction of the
new RDA standard for cataloging, she volunteered to produce a guide on RDA
cataloging for Arabic materials and Hebrew materials. She has also contributed
to the development of LC Romanization tables for a number of languages and
scripts, such as Judaeo-Arabic, Ladino, and Syriac,

Her doctoral dissertation, Dictionary of Old South Arabic, Sabaean Dialect,
published in 1982 in the series Harvard Semitic Studies, remains one of the
standard references in the field. Joan has also published a number of papers
related to cataloging, such as: A Case Study in Arabic Authority Names
(1994), The/My Philosophy of Romanization (2004), and The RDA Test and
Hebraica Cataloging: Applying RDA in One Cataloging Community (2011). One has
to read these articles to appreciate the profound learning, warmth, wit and
good humor of the author, qualities that have also characterized her
interactions with colleagues.

As a cataloging specialist, Joan has been a great mentor who has supported
aspiring catalogers and guided them through the learning process. A former
colleague attests that he received from Joan an excellent foundation in
cataloging and authority work. Another stated that Joan's review of RDA MARC
records was beyond exceptional, and her teaching style was impeccable,
thorough, and very responsive.

Dr. Biella's scholarship and her major contributions to the field and its
literature have benefited librarians, catalogers, and library users in the
United States and around the world. The Middle East Librarians Association is
proud to honor Dr. Joan Biella and thanks her for her service to the profession.

Re: [ha-Safran] Portuguese Haggadah?

2013-02-13 Thread Hirsch, David
Try sefer online... a brazilian online judaica store. Ask your patron to
interpret all the portuguese conditions on their page. They do accept credit
cards. Not sure if there is a minimum.
Here is a link to the Haggada in Portuguese.

[ha-Safran] Microfilm of a manuscript needed

2012-10-22 Thread Hirsch, David
Dear Safranim

I am trying to find a microfilmed or digitized copy of a manuscript in the Ets
Haim library in Amsterdam.
It is entitled Sukat David, by David Franco Mendes.

It may be included in the Famous Manuscripts of the Ets Haim Library collection
which was available from IDC on Microfiche.
I did not find it in the Institute of Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts in
Jerusalem catalog even though that catalog is listed as being one of the
collections filmed.
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.
David Hirsch

Re: [ha-Safran] Book about Judaism in Arabic

2012-02-20 Thread Hirsch, David
I would recommned Reuven Firestone's book, Children of Abraham: an introduction
to Judaism for Muslims, which has been translated into Arabic and is available
freely on the web at:

http://www.altawasul.com/NR/rdonlyres/9052668D-41C6-4B91-8D57-16DD1BE5311C/0/dhariyatibrahim.pdf

There are numerous books on Jewish communities in various Arab countries in
Arabic, but I think this is probably the best one I have seen on Judaism.

There is an old book by Murad Faraj, an Egyptian Karaite: al-Yahūdī : maʻná
wa-ʻaqīdah (1946) but it is not available for purchase. Your user would have
to borrow on interlibrary loan.

All best,
David
