Congratulations on this remarkable achievement! I urge everyone to read the Editor's Note which details the the process Rachel Leket-Morand all those responsible for *Judaica Librarianship* went through in bringing this to fruition. I want to echo the words of Bella Haas Weinberg in which she states, “May the Association of Jewish Libraries and its journal continue to flourish.” Joyce On Mon, Jun 16, 2014 at 4:57 PM, Rachel Leket-Mor rachel.leket-...@asu.edu wrote: Dear colleagues, I am pleased to announce that Volume 18 of *Judaica Librarianship* is finally published. If you have any trouble accessing the journal articles, please contact me by replying to this email. Non-member readers of ha-Safran may join the association at http://www.jewishlibraries.org/main/JoinAJL.aspx. At this point, two back issues of the journal are freely available at http://ajlpublishing.org: Vols. 16/17 (2011) and Vol. 15 (2009). Thanks to our Open Access policy regarding back issues, the articles in these volumes have been downloaded more than 4,200 times, thus exceeding the circulation of both the print issues and the reported downloads from database providers. That means that AJL’s impact on the international scholarly community is greater than ever before. Now that Vol. 18 is published, I plan to upload the other back issues of *Judaica Librarianship*, including Vols. 1–10 that are now digitized thanks to Laurel Wolfson of Klau Library, at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio. The production of Vol. 18 would not have been possible without the authors and anonymous reviewers who contributed their talents and time to the journal; the copyeditors, especially Judy Wolfthal, who helped with polishing the texts; all Editorial Board members, especially past Editor-in-Chief Zachary Baker and Associate Editor for Reviews Jim Rosenbloom, who were extremely helpful; and Nancy Sack and Karen Ulric who assisted with technology-related issues. Re: [ha-Safran] Book Thief
We read The Book Thief in my high school book discussion group and the students loved it. It was also taught in our 10th grade English classes. I would highly recommend it for young adults. Re: [ha-Safran] Is there a Jewish equivalent to Christian Fiction?
Hi Debby, I would compare Jewish fiction published by such companies as Targum Press or Feldheim to the similar category of Christian fiction. There is a strong emphasis on faith and adherence to Orthodox religion in these novels. The purchase of such titles for a public library would depend upon the constituency of your patrons. While there is a distinct English language genre as such (oriented to books by and for Orthodox Jews), I'm not sure how this is applied to books with Jewish themes aimed towards broader audiences (e.g. Herman Wouk, Faye Kellerman), as the heading lacks a scope note. As there is also a heading for Jewish fiction, there is definitely need for a scope note. I'm not sure there is truely a genre, beyond a handful of books aimed more for teaching than anything else, of religious fiction aimed towards non-Orthodox Jews. About Christian Fiction from Wikipedia - Deborah Bryan of the Kansas Library Association suggests that a Christian fiction writer must comply with certain restraints such as: (1) Accept the truthful authority of the Bible (2) Address dilemmas through faith in Jesus (3) Believe that Jesus died and rose for sins of all people (4) A writer is restricted from writing about certain 鍍aboos.納8]. She also suggests that this genre of books typically promotes values, teaches a lesson, always has a happy ending (good prevails over evil in all books), adheres to a decency code (certain boundaries such as sexuality, strong language, and topics of such cannot be crossed)... Some authors who write in this genre are Janette Oke, Karen Kingsbury, Judith McCoy Miller, Tracie Peterson, Bethany Kennedy Scanlon, Tosca Lee and Robert Whitlow.
