Hi Julie,
Check out the wonderful article by Sheryl Stahl and Joel Kushner in the
current issue of *Judaica Librarianship* at http://ajlpublishing.org/jl/
entitled *Be-tzelem Elohim*—In the Image of God: Identifying Essential
Jewish LGBTQ Books for Jewish Libraries
http://ajlpublishing.org/jl/vol18/iss1/7
It has a very comprehensive list and analysis of the literature.
Best,

Re: [ha-Safran] Judaica Librarianship, Vol. 18 (2014)

2014-06-18 Thread Levine, Joyce
Congratulations on this remarkable achievement! I urge everyone to read the
Editor's Note which details the the process Rachel Leket-Morand all those
responsible for *Judaica Librarianship* went through in bringing this to
fruition.
I want to echo the words of Bella Haas Weinberg in which she states, “May
the Association of Jewish Libraries and its journal continue to flourish.”

  Dear colleagues,

finally published. The journal’s first online issue is available at

AJL members should use a combination of their full name and email
address to access the full-text articles. If you have any trouble accessing
the journal articles, please contact me by replying to this email.
Non-member readers of ha-Safran may join the association at
 http://www.jewishlibraries.org/main/JoinAJL.aspx.

At this point, two back issues of the journal are freely available at
 http://ajlpublishing.org: Vols. 16/17 (2011) and Vol. 15 (2009). Thanks
to our Open Access policy regarding back issues, the articles in these
volumes have been downloaded more than 4,200 times, thus exceeding the
circulation of both the print issues and the reported downloads from
database providers. That means that AJL’s impact on the international
scholarly community is greater than ever before. Now that Vol. 18 is
published, I plan to upload the other back issues of *Judaica
Librarianship*, including Vols. 1–10 that are now digitized thanks to
Laurel Wolfson of Klau Library, at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The production of Vol. 18 would not have been possible without the
authors and anonymous reviewers who contributed their talents and time to
the journal; the copyeditors, especially Judy Wolfthal, who helped with
polishing the texts; all Editorial Board members, especially past
Editor-in-Chief Zachary Baker and Associate Editor for Reviews Jim
Rosenbloom, who were extremely helpful; and Nancy Sack and Karen Ulric who
assisted with technology-related issues. THANK YOU, all!

Mazal tov and kudos to Rachel and the entire board of Judaica Librarianship
on this wonderful accomplishment!
It's amazing to note that with the release of this green journal online,
our exposure has increased exponentially. The open access feature for back
issues really helps put AJL in the public domain and will lead to academic
recognition from a wider audience.

And of course, we are all waiting with bated breath for the new Chai
volume soon to be published!!
Best wishes,

Dear AJL members and ha-Safran readers,

On behalf of the editorial board of Judaica Librarianship, AJL’s

Volume 15, published in 2009, is now available together with volume
16/17, published in 2011, at http://ajlpublishing.org. To access the
content of volume 15, you have to use the “select a volume” menu on the
left bar, then hit “browse”. Thanks to our Open Access policy for back
issues, we are now reaching far more readers than ever - the full-text of
our digitized articles has been downloaded 2,925 times since we launched
the new website! Wow! That increases the visibility of AJL and the
 dissemination of our scholarly output.

The new issue of Judaica Librarianship, volume 18, will mark a new start
in the life of the journal. This first born-digital issue, appropriately
also named ḥai (the number 18 in Hebrew gematria), will be published in the
next few weeks. We request that our big institutional members (research
libraries) contact us ASAP to arrange for institutional access to the new
 content.

  Thank you,

Re: [ha-Safran] Book Thief

2014-01-19 Thread Levine, Joyce
We read The Book Thief in my high school book discussion group and the
students loved it. It was also taught in our 10th grade English classes.
I would highly recommend it for young adults.

   Friends,

Now that the book “Book Thief” is a movie, I have a question for school
librarians. Do you think the book is appropriate for children? I asked
this question of the author when the book first came out. He responded
that that was not his intention, but that it was marketed that way in the
USA by the publisher and cataloged as such in the USA. Personally, I
would not have recommended the book for children or even young adults
unless they knew a great deal about the Shoah and were very mature.

2014-01-15 Thread Levine, Joyce
Dear Safranim,

If any of you have developed Judaic online research guides that you'd be
willing to share with others, I would be happy to post them on the wiki.
So far we have an excellent link from HUC contributed by Sheryl Stahl. You
can find it under Bibliographic Instruction for RAS Libraries at

Shalom all and Happy Tu Bishvat,

We are proud to present Israeli Books in Translation for Children and
Youth - An Annotated List. This list marks the second installment in the
ambitious project we launched in 2011: creating the Classic Israeli
 Bookshelf.

The goal of the Classic Israeli Bookshelf program is to enable English
speaking students and families to access Israeli children literature, thus
forming a life-long bond between North American children and families and
their peers in Israel, and, by extension, to Israel.

Many educators, in both Judaic and General studies, expressed a desire to
have access to quality Israeli literature that was translated to English
and was published. When we embarked on this project to address that need,
we were surprised to find that such a list was not readily available or did
 not exist. It does now!

On behalf of the Israel Education Initiative,
 Vavi Toran

P.S. I want to thank members of Hasafran group for all their interest,
help, and suggestions. I would love to get feedback from you!

Re: [ha-Safran] Is there a Jewish equivalent to Christian Fiction?

2012-07-26 Thread Levine, Joyce
Hi Debby, I would compare Jewish fiction published by such companies as
Targum Press or Feldheim to the similar category of Christian fiction.
There is a strong emphasis on faith and adherence to Orthodox religion in
these novels. The purchase of such titles for a public library would depend
upon the constituency of your patrons.

 to
books by and for Orthodox Jews), I'm not sure how this is applied to
 books
with Jewish themes aimed towards broader audiences (e.g. Herman Wouk,

 heading

 not
sure there is truely a genre, beyond a handful of books aimed more for

The hope is to balance the collection with Jewish and Moslem fiction
 that
is along the same lines as the Christian fiction.

About Christian Fiction from Wikipedia - Deborah Bryan of the Kansas
Library Association suggests that a Christian fiction writer must
 comply
with certain restraints such as: (1) Accept the truthful authority of
 the
Bible (2) Address dilemmas through faith in Jesus (3) Believe that
 Jesus
died and rose for sins of all people (4) A writer is restricted from
writing about certain 鍍aboos.納8]. She also suggests that this genre of
books typically promotes values, teaches a lesson, always has a happy
ending (good prevails over evil in all books), adheres to a decency
 code
(certain boundaries such as sexuality, strong language, and topics of
 such
   cannot be crossed)...

Some authors who write in this genre are Janette Oke, Karen
 Kingsbury,
Judith McCoy Miller, Tracie Peterson, Bethany Kennedy Scanlon, Tosca
 Lee
   and Robert Whitlow.

Does Judaism have anything comparable to Christian Fiction?

Thank you so much.

WHAT ARE THE ISSUES AND QUESTIONS DRIVING YOUR WORK

IN JEWISH EDUCATION AND YOUR LEARNING TODAY?

Both young professionals and experienced educators working in the field of
education have at least one hot topic that keeps popping up in his or her
work. Recently, a group of Young Professionals listed such twenty questions
and each was unique to the person asking.
*Here's a sample of their questions to stimulate your thinking:*

   - What is the place of experiential education in a more formal setting?
   - What is my relationship to God and does it matter to my teaching?
   - How do I make Tefillah engaging?
   - What is the intersection of advocacy and Jewish education?
   - How can my school introduce meaningful aspects of Jewish practice to
student whose families are not engaged themselves?
   - How can I create and sustain an educational institution?
   - How can we move the Jewish community toward social justice for all?

Write about your questions. Use the following as guidelines to inform your
writing if you are a young professional

   - What is your question, issue, or area of concern? Why is this your
   question? What's personal about it?

   - What was the concern that brought this issue/question to your plate?
Why does it matter to you?
   - Does finding a definitive answer matter to Jewish education? To your
   practice of it? Why?
   - How will having an answer change your work in Jewish education?
   - How does your question relate to the big picture of Jewish education?
   - What would it take to answer your question? Do you think there IS
   ONE answer?
   - Is there a solution or set of solutions that would permanently answer
   the question/solve the issue?
   - Is the problem and/or its solution based in education, society, or
   both?
   - Is this a new issue or an evolution of an old problem?
   - How would your generation address this differently than previous
   generations?

Use the following questions to inform your writing if you are a seasoned
professional:

   - Did you have a question, issue, or problem earlier in your career that
   you tried to address?
   - What did you accomplish in that quest?
   - What did you learn about Jewish education, finding solutions, etc., in
the pursuit of answers to your questions?
   - If you failed, what did you learn from that experience?
   - What were the barriers to success you encountered in your quest?
   - Do you still hold the same question today and do you still find it
   engaging?
   - Do you have a new question, observation, problem to solve that you are
   working on today?
   - How would you approach it today as opposed to earlier in your career?
   - What questions would you like to see other people address in order to
   improve the field?
   - What advice do you have for others trying to make change in Jewish
   education?
