[ha-Safran] seeking short film about Islam

2018-12-16 Thread Peggy Kurtz via Hasafran
Hi Wendie and all,

I don't know of a good short film on Islam, but I do know of two Muslims, a
husband and wife, who would be glad to come and speak to the high school
students (or to any other audience). Unlike a film, they can answer
questions from students - and they are used to any question you can
imagine.

I know them well, can warmly recommend them for any audience and would be
glad to introduce anyone to them. He is a retired oncologist and she is a
retired hospital administrator. They are very personable and great
speakers. They co-taught a series of classes for us, together with a
rabbi, and it made a big impression on all of us.

Let me know, Wendie or anyone, if you'd like to be introduced.

Good morning wonderful safranim,

I am searching for a short film that provides an introduction to Islam for
upper school students in a comparative religions course.

Many thanks for your suggestions.

[ha-Safran] library supplies and shelving available

2016-08-01 Thread Peggy Kurtz
As the library winds down, I want to thank everyone for their interest in
our collection. I ended up speaking to many of you and I want to thank
those of you who helped us sort out what to do with the collection.

We still have some library materials that might be of use to other small
libraries: library cards, book covers, spine labels, date due labels,
rubber cement. Please reply if you are interested and could pick up from
us this week.

We also have a card catalog (not oak!), steel shelving in good condition,
and movable compact shelving. Please reply or call quickly if interested
in any of the shelving.

We will be continuing as the Cultural Arts & Jewish Heritage Programs
Dept., maintaining all of our programs just as before. None of this will
be diminished in any way.

[ha-Safran] QUICK REPLY NEEDED: Central Queens Y collection available for institutions (or individuals)

2016-07-08 Thread Peggy Kurtz
The Central Queens Y, with much sadness, announces that we are disbanding
the Jewish Heritage Library. This was a difficult choice, but the building
is bursting at the seams and library use was declining.

At the same time, our very full schedule of programs will continue or
expand, with author events, film screenings, and classes. I am not leaving
the Y, but the library will close by the end of this month.

We are trying to find the best home for our excellent 15,000 book
collection or for sections of it. PLEASE REPLY QUICKLY IF YOU ARE
INTERESTED IN COMING TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE COLLECTION OR TALKING BY PHONE.
I have included my cell phone below since I am not in every day. Please
reply as soon as possible, as we are under a deadline and will be selling
books the week after next, at which point the value of the different
sections will be much diminished.

We do NOT have a list of books or an online catalog. Books would need to
be picked up.

The library has been kept reasonably up to date and is an excellent core
collection. It includes a wide range of Jewish points of view, from
secular to Orthodox.

While we'd love to find one home for the whole library, we are open to
institutions (or individuals) taking different sections.

The 15,000 collection covers the following topics and more in shelf order:

   - philosophy & religion
   - Jewish history
   - Holocaust
   - Israel & Zionism
   - literature - including Israeli & Yiddish literature in translation
   - literary criticism
   - cookbooks
   - modern & classic Israeli literature *in Hebrew*
   - Talmud, Mishnah & Midrash - in Hebrew, Aramaic, and several English
   translations
   - Bible & criticism - traditional & modern scholarly
   - Responsa

2014-11-04 Thread Peggy Kurtz
I too would love more input on this book. I've thought of having the
author come to speak, since it's an interesting topic. But the book is
kinda salacious for seniors. I would have no hesitation to put it out
for adults. Maybe more hesitation for kids.

Hi Mirele:

This is a tricky situation! Does your school have a collection
development policy? A collection development policy can protect you
from having to personally make a judgement call and can outline
procedures to have a book removed from a library. I do not think
Amalia's suggestion of hiding the book behind the desk solves the
problem. If you do not have a collection development policy, now would
be a good time to develop one with the head of school and or other
leaders within your community.

Let me know how I can be helpful!

out what the book is about and discusses the meaning of its contents.
It seems to be a raw account of what happened to the author 15 years

promoting the book might cause controversy (because the teacher might
make a stink to others) whereas putting it on the shelf for someone to
find might be a better solution. It just depends on the make up of your
school population. The reviewer seems to feel that the girl never got
any proper lessons on behavior so that this is a cautionary tale. All
of this said I have removed purchases from my shelves because of
negative comments that could have caused upset. I worked in an
elementary school where there was more parental screening than there
possibly would be in an upper school. But then I am a coward and try to
avoid conflict if possible. All of this said I have not read the book.

2013-01-24 Thread Peggy Kurtz
What happens in a few years from now when they switch format or one of these
big businesses goes bankrupt? Does that mean all the e-books from that format
are no longer valid?

Equally important, the economic divide is real. It seems to me that we are
moving into an increasingly privatized world. Those who have money are buying
their own books, either print or e-books. The library is there to serve all
the people, not just those with the money to buy the latest technology.

  Dear Aaron,
Thank you for identifying a serious problem in our
libraries in our society as a whole. Despite carrying a stock in the tens of
thousands of titles I have no scrolls currently on offer in my inventory. In my
personal collection I have only four scrolls (not counting piano rolls).
Seriously, the transition from real books to digital
books is not an equivalent transition to the transition from scroll to codex.
As of yet most digital books are not even routinely better or cheaper than
paper. Libraries are being asked to change from a financial model that was
understandable to one that includes a variety of models and relies on a variety
of non-interacting formats.
Bookless libraries is a radical concept in
librarianship. It is being advocated as a one sized fit all solution for the
future of libraries. As a blanket model that certainty has to be false, at
least in the short run (10-20 years). Library schools are being turned into
Schools of Information Technology. As we go forward more and more of the
graduates of these institutions will be unfamiliar with how to handle actual
books. As a result they will have a bias away from actual books. However, it is
now and will be (for the foreseeable future) a decision made logically, but
will be one made only out of a bias for the new.
Ultimately the question for me is this. Do we really
want to jam our entire life onto a screen? Is that a wise choice and even if it
is what are the costs of making that choice?

  All the best,
  Henry Hollander

Should we panic that our libaries lack scrolls? Can you imagine a good
library without any scrolls? What about tablets (the small clay ones with
squiggling staff scratched on them - probably what Avraham used to use)?

   Aaron

This is not an official policy statement from my employer (which, BTW,
does have both scrolls and tablets though we do lack native speakers of
   sumerian to help catalog them).

family of 5 currently shares a single computer because we cannot afford
more. While we migtht save up for an extra computer, what about the
family with far more limited resources?

The comment made at the end of the article suggested that those without
the means for technology might love to read at home, but would be out of
luck should all reading material be converted to digital form. Tablets
might be lent out, but small libraries in small communities like mine
can't possibly afford even to offer ebooks, let alone to invest in
tablets. I see a disturbing class divide here for basic access to

[ha-Safran] excellent video collection for sale

We are selling our video cassette collection, a very fine collection of Jewish

Prices vary from next to nothing on up. Best price would be for the entire
collection but we are also willing to sell individual items. Many of these
films have never made it onto dvd. If there's enough interest, we would create
a list. If you live or work nearby and want to stop in or call or email,
please just get in touch!

Re: [ha-Safran] outstanding video cassette collection - for sale?forconversion?

2011-12-22 Thread Peggy Kurtz
What about the copyright issues? And what I'm understanding is that
there may be some cassettes that will not permit you to copy? I'm
cc'ing all, as there seemed to be a lot of interest from others.

Peggy,

I have converted a few and it an easy process. You can buy a DVD/VHS
converter for under $300. Put a blank disk in one side and your VHS in
the other. Push one button and wait the time it would take to play the
movie. Finalize the DVD from the menu and you are done.

We are disbanding our outstanding collection of about 300 films
of Jewish interest on video cassette. Does anyone have constructive
suggestions on this? Is this sellable? Would any of you be interested
in the whole collection or individual videos?

Have any of you converted videocassettes to dvd? If so, what
was your experience and what were the costs?

Thanks so much!
