Thanks for your explanation, [~shv].

After thinking about it again, my concern is already covered by HDFS-14941.
Surely Standby NN should not update the global GS in OP_REASSIGN_LEASE. Sorry
for confusing you, [~aajisaka].

I agree that HDFS-14941 and HDFS-15421.004.patch cover all the cases. I'm +1 on
[^HDFS-15421.004.patch].

2. I think adding applyImpendingGenerationStamp() in OP_REASSIGN_LEASE is
incorrect as it restores the race condition of HDFS-14941.
{quote}
Agreed. We should not update the SNN global genstamp in {{OP_REASSIGN_LEASE}}.
The global genstamp will be updated when tailing {{OP_CLOSE}} or other
operations after {{OP_REASSIGN_LEASE}}.
{quote}
3. Found one more place FSEditLogLoader.addNewBlock() were we need to add
setGenerationStampIfGreater(). addNewBlock() adds a block with a new genStamp.
{quote}
Already covered in HDFS-14941:
https://github.com/apache/hadoop/blob/dd900259c421d6edd0b89a535a1fe08ada91735f/hadoop-hdfs-project/hadoop-hdfs/src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hdfs/server/blockmanagement/BlockManager.java#L4742

Now I'm +1 for 004 patch.

[jira] [Commented] (HDFS-15421) IBR leak causes standby NN to be stuck in safe mode

Konstantin Shvachko commented on HDFS-15421:

Great collaboration here guys. Did some digging in the code.
# {{internalReleaseLease()}} can trigger three transactions: {{OP_CLOSE}},
{{OP_SET_GENSTAMP}}, {{OP_REASSIGN_LEASE}}. First two already handle genStamp
correctly with the patch. The last one does not have new genStamp.
# I think adding {{applyImpendingGenerationStamp()}} in {{OP_REASSIGN_LEASE}}
is incorrect as it restores the race condition of HDFS-14941. And the comment
is confusing: even though the two transactions are added to edits under the
common lock, their execution on SBN happens outside the lock and is not atomic.
# Found one more place {{FSEditLogLoader.addNewBlock()}} were we need to add
{{setGenerationStampIfGreater()}}. {{addNewBlock()}} adds a block with a new
genStamp.

Here is the list of all operations that can add new genStamp. LMK if I missed
any
# OP_ADD
# OP_ADD_BLOCK
# OP_UPDATE_BLOCKS
# OP_SET_GENSTAMP
# OP_CLOSE
# OP_TRUNCATE

I think all of them except OP_ADD_BLOCK use {{setGenerationStampIfGreater()}}
with the latest patch. Worth double checking of course.

Thanks [~kihwal] and [~tasanuma] for reviewing.

* Added a test case to set inconsistent global genstamps with Takanobu's help.
But I'm not sure this leak occurs in real workload.

Thanks for working on this, [~aajisaka].

The patch looks good to me for the cases of append and truncate. But it may
still leak when lease recovery(block recovery) runs. The following code creates
a new GS.

Konstantin Shvachko commented on HDFS-15421:

Good catch [~kihwal], thanks for debugging this. [~aajisaka] thanks for the
patch.
Clearly HDFS-14941 missed some append and truncate cases, which update blocks
with new genStamp while tailing.

Took a look at v02 patch. It seems you caught correctly all other cases of
block updates during tailing. Would be good if [~vagarychen] could take a look
as well.
One suggestion for tests is to move all test cases into {{TestAddBlockTailing}}
if possible, potentially renaming it to something like
{{TestUpdateBlockTailing}}. The two new tests have a lot of code similarities
with {{TestAddBlockTailing}. And if merged will avoid extra MiniCluster
startups, making tests run faster.

{quote}I think we need to update genstamp when rolling {{OP_APPEND}}. In
{{OP_TRUNCATE}}, it is the same.
{quote}
This change does not fix the problem for append. When appending a block without
{{CreateFlag.NEW_BLOCK}}, the edit log becomes as follows:
* {{OP_APPEND}}: prepare for append
* {{OP_SET_GENSTAMP_V2}}: update pipeline

That way SNN will tail {{OP_SET_GENSTAMP_V2}} after {{OP_APPEND}}, so apply
impending genstamp in {{OP_APPEND}} does not fix this problem.
I'll attach a patch with some regression tests.

Thank you [~kihwal] for the detailed report. I read your report and the
discussion in HDFS-14941.

In append operation, ANN first log {{OP_SET_GENSTAMP_V2}} and then log
{{OP_APPEND}}. After HDFS-14941, SNN rolls {{OP_SET_GENSTAMP_V2}} log and set
impending genstamp without updating the global genstamp. Next SNN rolls
{{OP_APPEND}} log but the global genstamp is not updated. That's why genstamp
is never updated and IBR always comes from the future. I think we need to
update genstamp when rolling {{OP_APPEND}}. In {{OP_TRUNCATE}}, it is the same.

Kihwal Lee commented on HDFS-15421:
---

Example of a leak itself: (single replica shown for simplicity)

1) IBRs queued. The file was created, data written to it and closed. Then it
was opened for append, additional data written and closed.

later processing because generation stamp is in the future.
{noformat}

2) Processing of queued IBRs as edits replayed. The IBR with the first gen
stamp for the initial file is processed. The one from append is not, as the gen
stamp is still in the future. It is re-queued.

3) When the edits for append is replayed. The IBR is still identified as from
future and re-queued. Since there is no more edits regarding this file, the
IBR is leaked.

With HDFS-14941 reverted, the last IBR is processed as expected and the leak
does not happen anymore.

The time in extension indefinitely grows negatively and the additionally
required blocks increase as more IBRs leak. You can force it out of safe mode,
but the leak continues until a HA transition.
