New Changes
As you may know, there are some exciting changes happening at Heroku: http://blog.heroku.com/archives/2009/1/12/whats_up_at_heroku/ As part of these changes, last night we moved all of the Heroku beta apps to a new domain, herokugarden.com. Any apps which were part of our first version private beta now live at herokugarden.com. Apps created or renamed after today will also live at herokugarden.com. === Where to Login You will no longer be able to login to heroku.com. Login to herokugarden.com instead: http://herokugarden.com/login === Update Links Bookmarks Apps that were located at appname.heroku.com Are now located at appname.herokugarden.com For the next 30 days, inbound requests for appname.heroku.com will be served a redirect (301 permanently moved) to appname.herokugarden.com. During this period, bookmarks and other inbound links should be updated. === Update Gem and Git Repos If you use git or the heroku gem/command line tools, you will need to update the gem and your local git checkouts. === More Information Detailed information is available here: http://herokugarden.com/transition === Troubleshooting We have just made this transition over the last 12 hours. Several parts of the system will still be updating throughout the day today, and some apps or user accounts may become unavailable while this transition is completed. Some common questions are answered in our transition FAQ: http://herokugarden.com/transition/faq Thanks for your patience while we make these important improvements to the platform, and thanks for participating in the Heroku beta! Re: Periodic Crashes (Server failed to start), no messages in production.rb
Matthew, An app reset on our part will usually correct the problem and in this case it has. We are busy working on better ways to get logs and error reporting from our users. Re: 10s response time for static files sometimes?
Matthew, Paul is correct - apps that haven't been accessed by any web traffic are frozen when unused and then thawed when a user requests the url. We are working improved methods for starting applications and scaling them as demand grows. - Ivan On Jan 8, 2:50 pm, Matthew Moore m3mo...@gmail.com wrote: My Apps are all in production mode. I would gladly pay for Heroku to run at least one instance of each app all the time :) On Jan 8, 7:45 am, Paul Clegg dotdotdotp...@gmail.com wrote: I think this is a result of the virtual machine design Heroku is using. One of the ideas behind cloud computing is that your servers don't exist until needed. So if your server hasn't been used in an hour, all its resources are removed from use. That first request, then, takes some extra time as the virtual instance is re-allocated, the code is started, and so forth. I've noticed it on my apps, too. Admittedly, such a long latency for that first request is pretty bad, but I can't blame them for turning my app off if nobody's used it in an hour. Also, is your app running in development mode or in production mode? I wonder if that might make a slight improvement... ...Paul On Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 9:31 AM, Matthew Moore m3mo...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, Some of my apps are seeing occasionally horrible performance - a greater-than 10 second response time - even for static files like index.html. From purely anecdotal experience, it seems like this is happening when the app hasn't been contacted for a few hours, and then on the first request after this dormancy, it will take a long time to start. The second request will go much faster. Since I rely on these apps having a 10s response time (which is fairly reasonable for 2 SQL queries per request) because I contact them via API, I was wondering if you guys had any advise. I could obviously just keep pinging my apps every hour, but this seems like a hack. Do you have any other recommendations to prevent them from having what seems like a startup time? Re: getaddrinfo Name or service not known
Right now, Heroku does not relay SMTP messages but we do allow outbound SMTP connections. What this means is that you need to set the SMTP hostname with the server you want to use for relaying messages. In other words, replace request.host in def notify(user) with the hostname or address of a valid SMTP server. One example of doing that using GMail can be found here: http://www.danielfischer.com/2008/01/09/how-to-use-gmail-as-your-mail-server-for-rails/ More info on configuring ActionMailer can be found here: http://dizzy.co.uk/ruby_on_rails/cheatsheets/action-mailer - Ivan On Jan 7, 2:25 pm, Tiago Franco gama.fra...@gmail.com wrote: I'm having the same problem.
