[hlcoders] Credit Card Fraud and Compression (2 topics in one mail! :p )

2004-11-08 Thread Imperio59
About the CC fraud, I've never bought anything on steam before and my CC
works everywhere on the web. I can understand you guys are worried about
the fraud and the money it drains but maybe you should loosen your
restrictions, just a bit...
HL1 was very (still is) very "good" for P2P networks. Steam kinda
stopped People downloading HL1 instead of buying it because they had to
have a login to play online. I still see people here in college who ask
around for hacked copies of HL1, if they ask me i usually explain to
them that i paid for my game and they can go to hell if they want me to
copy it for them...
As for compression and kkrieger... Have you seen how long it takes for
that game to unpack? almost 1-2 minutes on most machines... Plus the
graphics are horrible and the gameplay is basic to say the least. Such
demos may be nice in german programmer symposiums but they are not
commercial grade games. HL2 is a modern application, today most PCs wich
can run HL2 also have enough disk space to install it.
I hope there is an option to keep the DVD in the drive while playing and
only partially install those 4 gigs though, because as a modder, i can
see that my 40Gb HDD is not gonna cut it, i already have plans to buy an
additional 120gb Drive just to be able to mod for HL2...

RE: [hlcoders] Does Valve compress files?

2004-11-08 Thread Alfred Reynolds
The total download size of HL2 for the silver pack is around 2.5Gb (on
disk size is much bigger because its uncompressed). If you have any
other questions feel free to ask the source next time :)

The SDK uses content from CS:S to function, so you need to own it first
to run the SDK.

[hlcoders] Does Valve compress files?

2004-11-08 Thread Pavol Marko
Some time ago, I thought about buying HL2 through Steam. As I have only 5GB
internet bandwidth available monthly, I decided to ask in #steam on
Gamesurge how much Megabytes I have to download (to preload of course) if I
decide to buy HL2 now. They told me it was 4.1 GB.
Now I have a question: What do they want to do with 4.1 GB (= four million
two hundred ninety nine thousand one hundred sixty one $$$, err byte)? Ok, I
assume it uses many textures, models, maps, and whatever; but 4.1 GB? Maybe
a pretty good compression algorithm would make at least 2 GB of it? I heard
Doom3 uses _uncompressed_ TGAs for textures (where RLE would help a bit I
believe), I hope Valve isn't doing the same thing. I also heard stuff like
"the loading times would be 10 times higher with compression". Well, I don't
care to be honest (mainly becuase I don't have even 500 MB free disk space
on my HDD ). Also, I don't know how long it takes for todays 3-Ghz-and-more
processors to decompress 100 MB of data. But at least the data that has to
be downloaded should be compressed.
Anyway, if that 4.1 GB are compressed, I'll probably have to buy a new Hard
Disk.
Maybe you have heard about http://www.theprodukkt.com/ . They have a game
called "kkrieger", which looks pretty nice and is only 96 kb big. I know,
this is an absolute extreme, but it shows that one can also save some bytes
of data.
So, in the end, I decided to buy a retail pack (unfortunately, there is no
equivalent to "Silver"; so I will buy the classic retail pack then, which is
$5 or $10 cheaper than Silver and somehow has only the half of the stuff).
Then, the "SDK" got released. I was very happy for a moment. Then, I
discovered that you have to own a Source game to have access to the SDK.
So, my second question: Why is that?
Are there many crackershackers that wait for the SDK to be released to hack
CS:S, but don't have the money to buy it?
Or is there only a technical problem with Steam not allowing to download the
SDK if you don't own the game it belongs to? I imagine it should not be that
hard to upload one zipped / gzipped SDK package to a web server then.
Well, I can't find any real reason, and I would be very happy if someone
could tell my why it is done like this in the end.
As long as the SDK consists only of mapping tools (or modeling too? well
that doesn't change much either), I don't really care (I only care for the
source actually). But it might be cool to try drawing some boxes with the
new Hammer (yeah, the thing I never managed to do with the old one).

Just remember... Whatever you do don't put that link in your server.cfg.
Unless they have fixed the bug where that line gets reloaded every round
creating multiple streams to your udp listener...

Put it into game.cfg. It will only get loaded once when it starts... Only
problem I have had there is that I lost the information that I placed into
the game.cfg... Just plain gone.
