RE: [hlcoders] Steam to move to pay-as-play for HL2?
Well, I've heard several things about this situation. Even though I can't guaranty that this will not happen, I can tell you with the most truth I can get out that it will not. Valve is planning on releasing several versions of HL2. One of them will be a special edition collectors pack (final package includes not finalized as of late), a DVD copy, a CD copy, and one via Steam 2.0. Steam 2.0 will be the backbone for Half-Life 2, as I'm sure it will become for all current and future Valve products. This means that, once you have created your Steam account, and included HL2's CDkey, you will from then on be able to play HL2 via Steam anywhere you go, without your CD. You could install HL2 on your computer, and from then destroy your HL2 CD/DVD (not that anyone sane would... but it's an example), and as long as you still have your Steam account, will be able to play HL2 and any other offered Valve product. HL1?, CS, TFC, and so on. Now, if you were to purchase HL2 via Steam from the beginning, and not own a CD/DVD copy at all. It works the same way. I can see where people would confuse purchasing HL2 over Steam as it being a Pay-As-You-Play game, but I can almost assure you that it is nothing but a misunderstanding. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of mod man Sent: Monday, September 01, 2003 11:49 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [hlcoders] Steam to move to pay-as-play for HL2? There are suggestions floating about that once Steam and HL2 get going that HL2 will move to a pay-as-you-play billing format for online play. I wouldn't have give this much thought, except that the slide show presentation at the Game Developers Conference in 2002 listed this as a feature of Steam. It seems a little unlikely that Valve would add the feature to Steam if there were no future plans to use it. Would someone at Valve like to clarify if this is in fact the case? ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlcoders ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlcoders
Re: [hlcoders] Steam to move to pay-as-play for HL2?
I've spoken to some of the marketing people at Valve recently and they assured us that this was not for any products they themselves are releasing soon. Rather, as a tool for other developers shipping through Steam do charge fees that way. On the other hand, I think it's just a matter of time for Valve to do so. Recurring revenue is king. - Original Message - From: mod man [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 01, 2003 12:48 PM Subject: [hlcoders] Steam to move to pay-as-play for HL2? On the other hand, I think it's just a matter of time for Valve to do so. Recurring revenue is king. There are other options than pay-per-play to get recurring revenue (I'm assuming that pay-per-play means pay by the minute). An obvious one is a monthly fee like the one used by most MMORPGs. --- Paolo Nusco Perrotta Holy Wars Team http://www.planethalflife.com/holywars ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlcoders

The only real difference is the billing method. Regarding recuring revenue, the mod community provided recuring revenue to Valve through a seemingly endless variety of mods which helped keep player interest in HL. This gave an impetus for purchasing HL long after the its initial release. Subscription fees would be a real wet blanket for HL2 multiplayer gaming. ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlcoders

Re: [hlcoders] Steam to move to pay-as-play for HL2?
I only buy a game once. I understand the need for p2p but I'll never play a game that does p2p. If HL2 goes p2p for MP I'll buy HL2 for the SP. Also if HL2 does do p2p I guess I'll have to convence the leader for the mod I would be working on for HL2 to chose another engine or leave because I won't play for a game more then once. -Ms From: Shane [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [hlcoders] Steam to move to pay-as-play for HL2? An hourly cost like in the old muds wouldn't be profitable.
