A lot of the TFC players seem to have now moved onto BF2 or awaiting

RE: [hlds] Has VALVe abandoned TFC for good?

2005-08-07 Thread Spencer 'voogru' MacDonald
I sent some spam to Alfred to see if I can pry a response from his cold dead

Would be awesome if they released the source to TFC, I'd jump back into the
bandwagon and try to breathe some much needed life to TFC.

But yeah, I wish we'd get some kind of announcements reguarding TF2 or
TFC:S, we've been left in the dark way too long. I remember back in the
 days
were VALVe would release something for TFC... like new models or
something... That seems so far away now :(

It's also funny that some of the exploits that have been in the game for
many years are still in there, even tho some server-side mods fix those
 without any problem...

So how many frames per year is VALVE running at? And when the next frame
finally comes, do we get an update?

  :-P

How about just releasing the source to TFC? You released the source to
 DMC
and Ricochet, why not TFC? It's obvious that there is no work being done
 to
  the old TFC.

TFC is pretty much dead anyway, finding a server that's not full of bots
 is
  quite a challenge.

Re: [hlds] shots registering

2005-08-07 Thread Clayton Macleod
I have sent a description to the hlds_linux list two times in the last
couple of months :)

FPS is how quickly the input processing loop runs, tickrate is how often
the game runs a simulation step. So FPS will be equal or greater than
tickrate. A larger FPS will read packets faster but won't simulate the
game differently.

- Alfred

That last sentence is rather nice. So, are you still worrying about
500fps when even 34 would be more than enough? (at least on a default
33 tickrate server...)

[hlds] Server isn't being shown on master list?

2005-08-07 Thread Brian

I've been running a Sourceforts Dedicated server recently, and I cannot
get it to show up on the master server list. Players can connect fine
if I give them the IP. It's getting quite annoying as the server sits
empty.

Server Config:
sv_lan 0
sv_region 0
srcds -game sourceforts -console +map sf_overload -noipx
Ports 27000-27999 and 1200 forwarded to my computer, both TCP and UDP
I've tried using the heartbeat command, with no luck. I can't use -ip
because the computer only has a lan IP, and there is _nothing_ I can do
to change that (The modem and router are combined, no getting rid of the
 router)

I'm out of things to try, any suggestions?

The reason I think that it is important to run at a high fps on the servers
is, you have multiple clients, and assuming you have gone the whole high
rate servers route, you will be receiving a whole lot of updates, in order
of up to 100 per second from up to 40 different sources depending upon the
player number.
In fact I conjecture that now that tickrate has reduced significantly
number of simulations run per second in SRCDS, it is all the more important
to run with as high an fps as possible to ensure that each tick is
simulating the word with the most up to date data as possible.
It also seems that raising the fps on a server does not carry the same CPU
impact that raising the tickrate does, I'm happy to be told I am incorrect,
but that is what I see.
I have made some big changes to
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=threadid=293285 to
introduce a lot of definitions and bring them into a single location and
attempt to explain how they relate to each other as well as deal with the
god forsaken choke issue.
One thing I am not sure about is this, will clients get choke if the
servers fps falls beneath the servers tickrate?

I have sent a description to the hlds_linux list two times in the last

FPS is how quickly the input processing loop runs, tickrate is how often
the game runs a simulation step. So FPS will be equal or greater than
tickrate. A larger FPS will read packets faster but won't simulate the
 game differently.

That last sentence is rather nice. So, are you still worrying about
500fps when even 34 would be more than enough? (at least on a default
 33 tickrate server...)
